I'm inlove with Jean Simmons. I have seen every single film/tv performance of her. She was amazing actress with so much flair. So underrated. Absolute beauty (pure perfection in my opinion). I watch her movies for hours on end because I rewind her scenes over and over to capture every move she makes. My favorite thing about her is how her nose moves when she speaks. Just love it.

Rex Thompson played Deborah Kerr's son Louis in The King and I, and was also excellent in The Eddy Duchin Story and the tearjerker All Mine to Give (with Glynis Johns). Terrific young actor - whatever happened to him?

Good review of this film with some tidbits I hadn't heard before. For me Jean Simmons seems to be mostly overwhelmed in her role, but she is terrific her love scenes with then husband Stewart Granger and the shipboard confrontation with Charles Laughton. Deberah Kerr is top-notch as a rival for Granger's affections as well as the fine performances from Laughton as Henry VIII and Rex Thompson as Edward VI, the boy king who succeeds Henry. Their performances plus the majestic musical score by Miklos Rozsa elevate what is otherwise an average historical drama.

He was seen as treasonous because in real life he killed one of the king's dogs in the middle of the night, since they were guard dogs and there to protect the king it was seen as treason. The movie mixed a lot of the facts in with the soapy romance notion all while without offending the censors because in real life the rumors were far more scandalous. The love story was more than likely innaccurate but the producers made it enjoyable to watch and had great costumes and casting. Like you said- that little boy nearly stole the scene every time, and I agree with your review, new subscriber.

Film played fast and loose with history. They even called the Spanish Armada the French Armada. . . .

This film takes place before Elizabeth's ascension to the throne in 1558, the Spanish Armada didn't show up until 1588 thirty years into her reign. The French were always trying to sink England during this period and except the Crimean War they really didn't along with each other until the 20th Century.
