We had a bridge like that in Grand Rapids, Mi. After the bridge was rebuilt, the Fire Department said they couldn't fit their trucks under it. The street was permanently closed and turned into a pedestrian walkway. Fortunately, there was an easy work-around with other streets which involved some modifications.

Interesting. Years back the railroad did cut the road down as far as possible to get to the 12'-10" clearance. The original bridge dated back to the 1800's during horse and buggy days in Milwaukee.

We've got an 11' 6" bridge up here in Rhinelander but the truckers have mostly learned to avoid it. It got sacrificial beams and rebuilt abutments after a logging truck hit it and broke it loose which I had the unfortunate chance to witness. Now the bridge mostly gets 5th wheel campers especially around Countryfest time. Cool video.

I have see videos of bridges that trucks and 5th wheels seem to hit constantly. The railroad did drop the road as low as possible based on the river right there which got the clearance to 12'-10". Thanks for watching!

No wonder why we still have a supply chain problem. Either so many truck drivers get lost because they can’t understand or speak English or like this dope, get stuck under a bridge. These costs add up hence higher prices.

I know the bridge well. I grew up in the area. It's been doing this to trucks for years.

Another example of the lack of common sense modern truck drivers often demonstrate. Even when I was a green newbie back in 1993, I read signs. There are LOTS of locations around the US and Canada with low bridges (Milwaukee and Chicago were places one aaaalways wanted to get excellent directions to and from a shipper or receiver for this exact reason), many of which were built long before modern truck sizes existed. Adjusting grades to raise such a bridge or lower a road creates it's own set of problems and huge expenses, IF it's even possible due to surrounding topography, etc. 13' 6" is the basic standard for these trucks, so this driver wasn't even close. I began hauling permitted loads (oversized/overweight) in 2016, including two years of windmill blade transport, but am glad to be back in the North Dakota/Montana oilfield these days driving mostly winch trucks and away from the majority of these so-called "drivers". Too bad they don't use videos like this for training purposes when it comes to bridges and grade crossings.

They should use this video with me calling out the flashing sign at the end noting "ahhh the final warning before you lose your job" This bridge was built by the Milwaukee Road well before we had cars even a thought yet. The other issue is the Kinnickinnic River right here only allowed the road to be so low before it was in the river and would be to steep of an approach.

The CP engineers that were at the site to look the bridge and track before letting trains pass were mad as they had just recently added the sacrificial beam and flashing lights. I have seen many trucks wedged under there over the years.

They should have another sign on thend of the cement center support. (Oh, they do on the other end!) Well done video! Is that beam a little lower than the lowest part of the trestle? Might have made it if not for the beam? How many warning signs?
@raildogproductions
@raildogproductions 9 ай бұрын
The beam is the 12'-10" height and is now painted yellow. There are flashing signs at the top of the hill on both sides also. You just have to be on your phone to miss it.....

Dry box & refer trailers tend to be 13' 6" these days. You have to be brain-dead to believe a 13' 6" object will fit into a 12' 10" space. This is why you always plan your trip before you leave.

Huh. I shot a lot of trains at this bridge when I lived in Milwaukee from 8/2010-7/2013, and never saw anything like this. FYI, the westbound intermodal has been renumbered 149 from 199 since spring 2022.

Love to see your shots from that era around here. I actually started naming it 149 and realized this was back in 2021 when it was still 149. Good catch and thanks for watching!

The elevation track is even worse. I cannot count how many times that I had to inspect these tracks after a truck hit the kk and elevation bridges.

That would be scary. CPKC moves oil and ethanol unit trains through downtown Milwaukee daily but they heavily maintain the rail through here.

Notice that rather than build a bridge to the proper height... The railroad installs a steel beam to shred vehicles. Typical big corporations having it their way! Unfortunately, greed rules.
@BadgerlandRailVideos
@BadgerlandRailVideos 9 ай бұрын
The railroad would have been graded and the bridge built long before vehicles the height of modern semi trucks were ever a consideration. Raising the bridge would require an uphill approach on either side - a significant challenge for freight trains, especially in earlier days when locomotives weren't as powerful and distributed power technology not a thing. This particular bridge also has a swing bridge over the Kinnickinnic River immediately adjacent to it.

One of the ruling factors they had to deal with not only that it dates back to the 1800's but the river is right there so the road can only go so low and the railroad is already climbing to the east (south) from here. Years back the railroad lowered the road as for down as they could but the giant flashing warning signs on the south approach don't seem to help the drivers. If they were to stay on 1st street right up the road heading south or north there isn't a bridge to duck under.

Sorry Dave, just because somebody can buy a bigger vehicle than what was available when the road was built,(guaranteed that the railroad was there first) does NOT mean that the railroad folk are greedy, it’s just another inattentive driver.
