WOW! I just found Don Ross because the new Pandora station "Leo Kottke Radio" that I started pulled Don up as similar to Leo. I have been listening to Leo and others for forty years and had never even heard of Don! Guess I should get out of the house more. I like Don's work very much already! The full bar harmonics are really cool. (Non standard tuning helps.) I'm looking forward to hearing a lot more of Don's work and your KZbin comments will help me see where you all are at.

Don Ross has a very very gifted right hand. He's a superb guitarist and composer indeed. I wonder how he composed this piece... there's something in the way he strum, pluck and tap his stings, very intricated... I love this piece... I actually heard this piece from one of our Narada albums..

you know what's great about don ross... you know it's him from the first 2 bars. Michael Hedges isn't even that defined stylistically. I've heard a lot of songs that I thought simply couldn't be hedges, but sure enough they were hedges. Don Ross, man, you've got the most distinct voice the acoustic guitar has ever seen. Amazing! 5/5

Actually, a lot of my friends love his music too. I also don't understand why other guitarists push ahead of him. Maybe this is just Don Ross taking it slow, who knows. It doesn't matter because we like his music and he is still around to make more of it.

I would recommend slightly larger strings for any alternate tunings. For most guitars .012's or .013's work well. They're also easier for fingerpicking than really light strings. It will tune fine, just make sure to tune it last. If you try to tune your high-E up to F# before the others are tuned down you will probably break at least one string everytime. But if you tune low-E to B and the others down it will relieve a lot of the tension on the neck. Hope this helps! Rock on!

I can see where Andy Mckee's style of play is derived from. Although its very distinctive you can hear the roots in Don's style.

It's tuned up. It's possible to do it with standard gauge strings, but if you're really interested in playing this song use a heavier string for the E/F#. I had a 14 on my guitar and it took it over a month to snap even when tuning in and out of the F# all the time. (I play a lot, so yours might last longer) If you detune and capo it you're liable to get buzz. @BryantFC- Don does use a baritone, but not for this song. I sincerely doubt you can take the B on a baritone to an F#

This is a great song. The weird thing for me is when he goes to the chord modulation, all I hear is is that 70's tune; Sooner Or Later, Love Is Gonna Get Ya. Anyone else hear that too? It's a riot! Still, an awesome tune that's executed wonderfully.

Dang....how in the world did he manage to get the high E up to an F#? The G string and high E are the 2 hardest strings to tune any higher. It would be easier to tune the B string to a D than tune the E up to an F#...unless he tuned it down to get to the F#?
@emivik
@emivik 17 жыл бұрын
just build a custom string gauge from existing strings, and there you go...something like .09 (or .08) .12 .23 .34 .48 .60 (i'm making it up at the moment, but something like that should be fine, .60 is quite big but necessary for a B..)
