There is a story unfolding here. It kind of reminds me about M15 and who we now know as F23. She watched from above and never hurt the E’s but she was absolutely adorable waiting for the right time. M15 grew to trust her and now they are incubating their own. This could happen here. Maybe F1 is progressing into a fertile stage and has chosen Alex. Time will tell but he is building up trust already bits at a time. We will all just have to stayed tuned in. I noticed one of Andrias feathers is still in the nest but now it is under a rail stick at the bottom of the video. Maybe this is Andria sending Alex a new love that she approves of. Trust in the Eagles !!! 🦅🦅

I think the intruder is trying to make moves on Alex, this has happened before in other nests... Just wonder how these females know the male is mateless so quickly?
@sabrinashaw7951 Жыл бұрын
The male's calls for his missing mate I think.
@ladyhawk Жыл бұрын
Hi denault There are quite a few eagles in any given area and they all know whose territory is guarded by a bonded pair. When a mate dies, they see only one eagle in a nest and they do call out for their mate. They watch and observe and then poof they are here in a flash. I have seen this over and over on many different nests I watch over the years. When there is a bonded pair - one is incubating and one is standing guard in the tree and will chase off any intruders. They know that the dynamic has changed when that does not happen like we saw with this female coming in so quickly.

Lady Hawk, You Always Have Terrific Thumbnails in Your Videos! Alex could have used a Nanny Eagle (like when Gabby showed up to help Romeo)! But unfortunately that Thursday when Andria first showed symptoms of illness and she was unable to incubate or roll eggs that day/evening we know that by then it was too late. I agree with Curious Cat that it would be a blessing for Ravens or other small predator to come into the nest, eat the eggs so Alex can have time for himself to get healthy, then let Nature unfold events as it will this season or next. I've also observed that Alex seems to only roll one egg, instead of both. (I'm just not sure if it's always the same one)? Bless his Lil' Birdie of Prey ❤️! All I know is that this is one determined Lady Eagle that's visiting!!! She's acting like Alex is a widower with a messy house!😆 I think you do a great job distinguishing the female visitors bcz they all look alike to me! 😆 Lady Hawk, from my own observations besides females being larger and more aggressive than males, beaks, feet (talons) and their Hallux are larger to. I'd say that the females brow is more pronounced due to the (Supraorbital Ridge). I think that's why to me, that females look more stern/fierce and the males look animated.😁 Thank You Lady Hawk for sharing an unprecedented adventure with us in the life of Alex!

Dear Lady Hawk, TYSM for keeping a video diary for those of us who can't follow this nest cam (I sure can't bring myself around to deal with what happened to beautiful mama, Andria) I was wondering for days: what and when does Alex eat? My concern is that in this confusing situation he just becomes emaciated 😢 I certainly don't expect either of the females to bring in any food with the intention of sharing; we know the BA ladies are renowned of being 'greedy' (lol, no offence girls!) So how exactly Alex is getting nourished? On a separate note, I can't stop thinking and sort of comparing M's situation last year to sweet papa Alex. M has been incredibly 'fortunate' that his little ones were not only out of the eggs but through their first few weeks when they are most vulnerable.

Hello Chesh the first egg was laid Nov 18th or 19th (the cam was down) and egg #2 on Nov 22nd. I am sure Alex is getting food - he was away from the nest for periods of time today. Survival is paramount - the egg incubation and defending the nest is secondary.

I don’t get the sense that she wants to harm the eggs, but she isn’t being super careful, either. LH, in your last video, it looked like she stepped in one or both eggs after partially covering them. I doubt they’re viable anyway, but it was concerning nonetheless.
@ladyhawk Жыл бұрын
Hi trax yes she has stepped on the eggs but I don't think she put her full weight down. The eggshells are pretty strong to withstand stuff like that. But a stick hitting it could pierce the eggshell or if there is a kerfuffle on the nest with a lot of feet and action in one of these intruder fights - an egg can get damaged. I don't think they are viable any longer either - I would like them to just get buried and become part of the nest ♥

Very interesting. Thanks for the updates, Lady Hawk. Poor Alex. Is there any way possible the eggs can survive, LH?
@ladyhawk Жыл бұрын
Hi Mary I would never say never because I have seen eggs left non- incubated for long periods in the cold on other nests and they still hatched but there are so many factors involved like ambient temperature, were the eggs rolled and even a parent standing over the eggs like Andria did helps keep them warm.The rangers say they don't believe the eggs are viable any longer and that is probably the case. But ever since Alex returned on Saturday he had done a great job incubating so if they survived that period of time with Andria's illness there is a slight chance they can survive.

@Lady Hawk or anyone who can answer. I know this is probably a crazy question but it's been on my mind and this video made me think about it more but how do Eagles(or any bird) know who is their mate, for example after they are apart during migration or when they see them from a distance. How are they able to differentiate their mate from a visitor or intruder? Thanks in advance ❤
@ladyhawk Жыл бұрын
Hello Melissa - there are no crazy questions!! Eagles can differentiate one another by the sound of their vocals and their behaviors and body language. Eagles use a combination of these communication methods to one another on a daily basis and this is how they can tell if that is their mate or an intruder. Also the sound of their mate's vocals - whether high pitched or whistle like and how they communicate to one another signal familiarity. Also they have a certain body language and submission and /or aggression with one another. Of course there is the visual as well that they recognize. If the visual is not immediate like in an extended absence (like in migration or in the albatross taking a year off after breeding separately from their mate) they then rely on the vocalization and body language! ♥ Hope that helps!

Highly unlikely that another female will care about eggs, most likely she’s just trying to hide them or bury them 😢
@carolwisniewski6740 Жыл бұрын
It couldn't be possible for the female to already know the eggs are not viable, could it? It amazes me how quickly the word gets around that there's an opening available. These are better than the swamp lizards that were bothering M15 last season. They've been pretty birds for sure. will it be too late for him to start a new family in a month or so? It'll probably take longer if the eggs don't hatch. If they do by some miracle, it would be awesome if she at least helps him by keeping the babies warm while he hunts. I think I'm dreaming, now.... Thanks Lady Hawk!

I find it so interesting how they know who is & who isn't their partner just by landing on a branch. Also the fact that Alex somewhat seems comfortable with F1 & NOT F2 especially at this time. Are there any proven cases that a new female would help raise any eaglets of a new mate if the eggs hatched? I know it has been said already that most likely the eggs are not viable, but I'm just curious. God does work in mysterious ways some times. No one knew if M15 would succeed after losing Harriet although the eaglets were 2 months old at the time. Life is unpredictable. Thanx for the update regarding Andria LH. Will watch & wait like you suggest rather than speculate.

Are these eggs viable?
@ladyhawk Жыл бұрын
Hello Marcus the eggs were left non incubated for long periods of time with Andria's illness and then falling from the nest. The USFS personnel that retrieved Andria's body made the statement that they do not believe the eggs are viable and that Alex can't do it alone. It would probably be the best thing if the embryo's did stop developing during that time rather than hatching and facing certain death by being left non-brooded and out in the elements when Alex has to leave to hunt or when intruders keep coming to the nest they would be easy food.
