It's easier if you cut the kydex with tin snips. Also if you tape the blade with some blue tape before hand it will minimize friction on the blade afterward. Nice job on it though! The leather loop was done very nicely.

Post heat treat I dropped the blade, there was a mark on the edge but not a fracture. The blemish was gone after the sharpening.

awesome knife man but I wanted to see the heat treating process and how you tapped the tang for threads or whatever you did to it to use the screws. I just recently started making knives so I've been watching all kinds of vids just soakin in the info
@xxxtenta45208 жыл бұрын
Dragunovluv when heat treating get it cherry red the cool check for magnetism every so often then when its not quench it in oil then put it in the oven at 200 degrees for about an hour then let it cool to room temp then in the oven again
@FearNoSteel8 жыл бұрын
I would have liked more "snap" retention on the sheath by not cutting it past the bolster, also a thumb spot on the kydex to release the knife smoothly would have been rad. sick knife though bro. well done.

@Triad3DStudio8 жыл бұрын
is that just plastic you're using for the sheath?
@jacobsacres60388 жыл бұрын
The sheath material is called "kydex" its a thermoforming plastic mainly used in sheath and holster making. Thanks for the comment!

@mattreeves4378 жыл бұрын
Do you not heat treat your blades? New to the this and am just curious if you have to heat treat all steel types.
@jacobsacres60388 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt! I send mine off to be heat treated. I do not own a heat treat oven yet, but when i do I intend on doing it myself. Any blade steel is going to have a specific heat treat requirement. It's very interesting to learn.

What thickness of steel do you like to work with? I'm thinking around 1/8th inch would work, but I'm not sure if I should go slightly thicker.
@jacobsacres60388 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the style of blade you're making. I mostly use 3/16 and 1/4. I'll use 1/8 for bushcraft knives with a scandi grind.

I am surprised the blade didn't crack in the heat treating phase. Especially at the blade edge.
@jacobsacres60387 жыл бұрын
Why's that?
@wreck_ignition78477 жыл бұрын
Because of the material and the geometric, thick to thin transition. We generally expect almost half of our lot to come back unusable when we use this material.
@jacobsacres60387 жыл бұрын
Do you do heat treat for a living?
@wreck_ignition78477 жыл бұрын
I'm an AWS Certified Welding Inspector. I've worked very closely with large heat treatment facilities dealing with military (DOD) contracts. Generally harder materials are checked after heat treatment with wet fluorescent magnetic particle testing. I have a firm understanding of heat treating harder (60+ BHN) materials.
@jacobsacres60387 жыл бұрын
Very cool. I send these blades out to get treated. Most makers grind the bevels of the blade prior to heat treat. I've never had a blade fail heat treat.
@Bowtie417 жыл бұрын
Where can I get the rivets and tools?Nice job!BTW,did you stamp or CNC the name,I missed that step?Also,I'm right across the river in Granite City.How much does MW charge for a blade like that?
@jacobsacres60387 жыл бұрын
Engraving was done on a cnc milling machine. I do my blades in batches so it gets the price down. but normally i think they charge $50 for a blade.

Jacob is my brother who passed away. My brand is named after him. I think it looks great.
@sirsir96657 жыл бұрын
That's fine and I respect that and it's a good way to honer him but I would refrain from putting it on blades you make for customers. People really don't like big logos like that. Even more with a person's name on the side. I recommend a logo symbol like Gerber does.
@jacobsacres60387 жыл бұрын
I've been exploring different options. im thinking a single "J" or something along those lines. Thanks you for the feedback!
@sirsir96657 жыл бұрын
That would work. Or maybe a Jaybird symbol for short, it could have a second meaning too like he's flying in the skies above now.
