Classic Krav Maga knife threat defence. They have plenty more practical defences like this. Itay Gil’s Krav Maga syllabus especially. Between Ryan Hoover and Itay Gil I think they have a lot of things covered. The only small thing I’d add to this technique is as you go for the two-on-one tuck your chin immediately to protect your windpipe/ artery, turn your tucked chin in the direction of the knife hand and drive your head back in to his elbow away from the blade. It gives your neck that little extra protection from the blade and creates more space. Ryan Hoover’s demonstration is pretty good, but it would have been good if he’d demonstrated the footwork that goes with this technique. The footwork is equally critical to executing the technique well.

NEVER assume that you can learn these techniques from watching a video, they are instructional only. Practicing this is the key, train and practise for hours, days and months. Really like these videos thought, Funker is some of the best out there. Greetings from Norway

Hawkie M As I said, I've taught and studied for 30 years. What I was talking about learning was the different perspective shown in the video, not the technique itself. All of what was shown were fundamental basics. The different perspective comes in the way they're put together.

Here is an additional tip for 'Surviving': If the attacker wants something from you *DO NOT* try this technique and just give them what they want. It might seem really stupid at first but unless you have fully mastered self-defense techniques do not think for a second that any object has a higher value than your life.

Peter ohne Nachname unless your mugger wants to deal with the problem of a dead body, blood stains on himself and the knife and possibly a large scream of pain drawing everyones attention I think the knife acts more as a threat rather than what people actually think its used for. No one will resort to killing on an unarmed victim unless the victim starts to fight back. Only borderline psychopaths would immediately resort to killing in which point they probably aren’t interested in your wallet and just interested in killing people. If you could react before the knife is around your neck by simply turning around, moving away or keeping your arms up to avoid getting headlocked that is definitely much better than waiting and negotiating afterwards.

when I see videos debunking the ability to disarm in cqc or in case of weapons point blank, its always about "reaction time" who can pull the trigger faster, single or double action, is the hammer back, do you get your vein nicked. What the israelis told a hungarian reporter, the most important thing when deadly force is presented and you are planning to disarm is, distraction. The human is a crude and wonderful animal, even trained soldiers can`t escape the fact that our brain is a "one thing at one time" machine. This fact and that it is explained in the video is brilliant.

May I also bring to attention that even the bellicose love someone somewhere and we are obligated to offer opportunity for psychological realignment to an offender. Advance what you have offered here and extend compassion with physicality to render the individual to a retarding physical and psychological state without ill intention. Just because someone is attacked does not give a cogently aware individual the right to take an others life. The true art to self defense is to apply wisdom in every movement within the space we share. You must remember, if someone acts out on humanity, they are in suffering, can you now comprehend the “obligation”?! Give ALL a opportunity and over come your fears. Love to ALL.

Ever cut yourself while cutting an onions or any veggies..... Yes that stinging feeling except mine was for a minute or less Step 2. Place your hands slowly on the blade i.e between your neck and his blade while responding to him conversation Step 3. Release at once with full force and you cut your hand and save your neck I don't know this is how I survived and remember your friends won't and can't do shit about it my friends moved out of the way without warning me and one of my friends picked up a bamboo and tried to hit em but I told him not to since someone had a long ass knife at my neck

Pass Datass when you first resist, the guy could easily punch him or hold his arms to his chest while landing knees to the back and kidneys. If you had half a brain, you would realize I’m referring to when the person shows resistance. If the mugger is left handed, he could punch the man’s liver and he would collapse. It’s sad to see people who are so oblivious and delusional when it comes to realism. Do you think if this were to happen to you, everything would work out just how it did in the video? It’s quite apparent you aren’t the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Good point. I like the technique, but you've given me something to think about. I think it's an easy trap to fall in to in believing that your (or my) slick technique is going to finish things that "easily", when reality is definitely not often that cut and dried. The follow on techniques need to be in place for when things go wrong or get out of control.

standing not expecting it, mind you’re own business an abdominal stab if not eviscerating, the person will be unable to stand or walk within 10 minutes, factor adrenaline, bp in triple figures, now that 10 minutes (average fitness for a person) drops dramatically, approx 2 minutes every 15 seconds, add five or more punctures or a single shot to liver, the person is on the floor within 30 seconds, if first aid isn’t applied, death effectively in 3 minutes, doesn’t matter if they feel it or not, physics will prevail, they’ll be on the floor with a warm flush over their faces, a thump in their skulls and feeling of going cold and the realisation they’re fucked, and you can either simply run away in terrified monkey mode, or hang around up to the half hour response times to give a statement to cops, mocking the asshole on the floor as they cry for their moms, probably get arrested, go through the motions, and hope the jury takes you’re perspective on self preservation, I’ve always felt: better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

This is actually the problem with lot of teachers in schools. If the students are bored, they will not remember very little from lesson (making the lesson waste of time for students and the teacher in the end except that teacher get paid for it still I guess), but if you make it fun by just couple of jokes while majority of time is still the education, the whole lesson teach 10 times more even if you spend some time on the jokes. Skipping the commercial complaint, I find it strange that people would complain about this technique being something taught to them a way earlier. Of course it has been taught by many different masters! I don't think the people who taught you this will consider them being mentioned in this way a compliment. Most likely they would just mentally face palm ;-) A starting point for analyzing the functionality and applicability of a technique: Is it taught by many respectable masters? If it works, it is most likely similar in all arts. The core principles of martial arts guides the development of these techniques, and those are nearly laws of physics. I also understand the sentiment about the stabbing in the end, but Ryan is not obviously teaching you to do exactly as he is doing. He is talking about 2 on 1, creating leverage, positioning, moving away to a safe zone, counter attacking, things like that. These all open many possibilities for multiple of variations, especially after you've changed your positioning. There is a plethora of details he just omits here to not make it too heavy to understand in 4 min.
@jasonroets99065 жыл бұрын
I like that he spoke about letting the guy get to that position. In Bjj its all about preventing a person from getting the back or mount or so on. As a worst case scenario, just getting your neck out and running might just be good enough.

This may sound weird, but I grew up in the filipino labor camps in California. As a child we were taught of all things knife fighting. And I remembered as a nine or 10-year-old that if someone had a knife on your neck just like you shown, you’re to grab the knife. The theory, what is that if you grab the knife by the blade, you would at least not have your neck cut. And because you had the knife by the blade, you had the advantage of wrestling it away from the attacker. I’m not suggesting that this is the right way, but I remembered this lesson when I was a child. From what I remembered, these instructors were very good with the balisong and was both impressed and scared watching them practice slicing vital parts of a victims body during their training after picking grapes.
@cellsec77036 жыл бұрын
Sure, I would rather have my hands cut than my neck, but I don't see how grabbing the blade means I could wrestle the knife away, he is holding the handle which is specifically designed to be held in a grip without slipping, I am holding a thin and slippery blade, cutting into my flesh making me feel incredible pain.
@ffod1236 жыл бұрын
I didn’t say it was right or wrong. This is what I was told when I was young and, thank God, never had the opportunity to use it to save my life. Even as a practiced martial artist, I was trained to serio nage shoulder throw, I’m not sure what I’d do. But with that said, I can see your technique working. It’s something someone has to practice (a lot) and know to use when and if that crazy time comes.

Guro Dan has been teaching the exact defense for more years than I can remember. Great stuff, but I sure wish these guys gave credit to where it came from. When you talk to a lot of these guys, not necessarily Funker, but the roots go to Guro Dan, Leo Gaje, etc. and all the “traditional” guys.

Once you're head is clear, you want to run with the attacker as he said, because that'll confuse him, lose some balance and lessen his chances of tensing up in order to control another knife attack, he'll be more focused on standing ground.

I bet this is awesome ! I'd love to know how I'd do in that situation. The idea of training improving and getting stronger while sparing is very neat. Honing the little structures in each move and committing them to memory by practicing over and over. Hell yeah brother

I appreciate your effort’s, very skilled. Love to ALL.

ah, there's one position I came up with that... no two actually that you can not use this technique on and one is too hard to escape before death. one is that instead of having the arm ABOVE the shoulder, you could have it under it with the other arm above the other shoulder whilst holding the hand with the knife so that when ever you try to use the technique, you either stretch the arms and stab right through your neck or have it sliced... unless you're stronger than the one holding you hostage, at which point they would kill you instantly. escape is hard for that one but it is possible. the other one though... it's probably not possible. I call it the "instant death" technique. by holding the knife upside down and in reverse(the blade is pointed at you. it works better with a two bladed knife though.) quick enough that the victim would not see you holding the knife in reverse, pretend to slice the opposite side of the neck of the the arm you're holding the knife with (the opposite to you.), while you start pushing on them with your elbow on the arm without the knife. then when your knife has finished "slicing" you can either keep the knife there so when you pull, it automatically slices or just pull back sharply with the tip of the knife pointed right back at you(this should stab right into the victims neck, which depending on the side of the body you were on, might kill them within minutes or seconds. if you were at the front, then it should've penetrated into their spinal cord. if you were behind them, their neck would have a huge hole that you can make bigger by pulling on the knife after it's been stabbed in. both should kill indefinitely.). before I'm seen as a murderer, I'm just a teenager who happen to daydream about insta-kill techniques. also because you're pushing against them, they can not take the risk of pushing you away. if they start moving away from you, just stab right into the side of the neck. should get them to a point where you can finish them off for good if you wanted. I'M SERIOUS ABOUT NOT BEING A MURDERER, IF POLICE COMES AROUND BECAUSE OF THIS COMMENT, I'M NOT A PSYCHOPATH EITHER... or I think I'm not at least to the point that I would be called a psychopath. am I one? no clue really. if I am... heck, why not.

First thing you do if someone has a knife on your throats like that, give them what they want. Your phone is much easier to replace than your jugular vein! Only try anything like this if you're in a life or death situation and there is no other way out.

They taught us the same in Ketsugo Jujitsu. Pin the knife hand down like that first so he can't slice you with it. You better practice this one a lot, though, don't be thinking you know this because you saw it on KZbin.
@mbroderick19846 жыл бұрын
what people don't realize though, is that this needs to be worked into muscle memory, through repitition at least 10 000 hours of repitition (litterally the time frame required for mastery) If it doesn't become a reflex, it's actually more dangerous to attemp than not to. That's why martial arts is so repetitive and requires such patience.

First rule of survival is to know your territory and be aware of any impending dangers. And where they may come from. To get into this situation in the first place would be avoided by most trained special forces. Very rare contact would be made like this. Don’t get into it if possible. Do this ten times out of ten and guaranteed your heads off on at least 7 occasions. Avoid these situations.
@lr15346 жыл бұрын
This technique is also dangerous because the attacker can easily trip you with his/her foot, causing your head to fall and the knife will easily get lounged in your neck.
@chiefoftheoldgods89126 жыл бұрын
Yeah plenty of people don't expect you to do anything while you're talking or while you let them tack so either times are pretty damn good. Silence is your enemy in this situation. That doesn't mean to scream because that could very well get you killed but confident conversation like you're both talking over a cup of coffee is good, let's him get his guard down.

Hard to do if youre not really trained. Best is to give em what they want then if they tried to get away and youre in a better position. Become the aggresive one unless they are really good runners.
