As I have gotten older, I understand why my grandfather carried a smaller knife . I know carry a Buck 55, Fisher space pen in a Hitch and Timber wallet. I love having everything I need in a small compact package. A bonus, it is all USA made.

As an electrician I carry a skeletool cx everyday. Would highly recommend to anyone who works in a trade. One handed open and closing knife no need for a dedicated knife as it is one. Screwdriver is a must for me, pliers and wire cutter comes in handy regularly as well. Without the extra bulk and weight of a full multi with a bunch of tools I wouldnt ever use.

I’m a landscaper and a skeletool is great for me because it’s in a small package. I only really use the pliers for when my pruners or loppers need to be tightened. I carry another knife or two already but the screwdriver comes in handy sometimes for sure.

The most underrated tool on a Swiss army knife is the *corkscrew.* Nobody uses it, but it's absolutely amazing for untying knots! So much rope and chord can be saved by not cutting a knot that is impossible to untie, because with a corkscrew it becomes REALLY easy to untie any knot.

I worked as a multi-craft technician in industrial maintenance. My first rule was that I didn't loan my knife, period. Need a blade? Here, use the Leatherman one. That said, I carried a gold class 941 with an M4 blade. I used it A LOT and kept it very sharp. It held a long edge. I also carried a Leatherman Charge Ti and bit set & ratcheting extension. This I did for many years and had no reason to change. In retirement I can't part from my EDC kit, but upgraded to a small Sebenza w/Magnacut and Micarda, a gift to myself that I'm really enjoying.

Right on with tanto and surge as an EDC for tradesmen. That is exactly what I carry - Surge in a kydex sheath and a beater tanto (with partial serrations, great for cutting straps on packaging). Another benefit of the tanto is that it’s great for prying.

Hey DCA, regarding corkscrews. My knifes corkscrew has helped many folks at cookouts and tailgate opening bottles of wine. Even if you don’t need it yourself being prepared to help folks is a good feeling.

Hello Knife Center, I almost couldn't agree more with your pairings, but have a couple differences that I think are worth considering. For the multitool, the Victorinox Rangergrip 78 gives a larger saw and when carried in the pocket is very useful as the primary go to EDC blade, adding a neck knife like the Condor Otzi, gives that smaller but not too small stronger edc knife with the strength of not being a folder (it has a blade shape and size comparably quite similar to the Banter), for the 4 in fixed, I carry either a Condor Bushlore/Aqualore/Cavelore or a Mora Garburg (though the Kansbol does a superb job of meeting that need)... That said, I was wondering which 'Survival' knife (in the 7-9in range) would you recommend as the best fit to be a fourth knife when the three knives mentioned above are also being carried? Thank you, and if you don't answer this question in a FAQs, would you please answer in a comment, as this is the question I'm asking myself for my next knife purchase.

If you are looking at heavy multitools, the Gerber Dual Force has some appealing features. As mentioned, a Skeletool CX has a decent knife and doesn't require suspenders to carry. No love for an Opinel outdoors? The Rangergrip? Easy to sharpen, cut great... Also I've noticed there isn't much attention paid to the more nautical end of outdoors pursuits despite some knives from Sypderco that will at least survive the environment. Filet knives get a little attention from a few makers, rigging knives don't seem to have changed in 50 years (aside from 2 options from Victorinox), and reviews in these areas are rare. Also the Victorinox handyman is not a bad balance of weigh, bulk, and utility to go with a dedicated knife.

Over the years, my EDC has evolved into a fixed blade and 1-2 complementary multitools or SAKs. Currently I go with a TOPS CUT 4.0, Skeletool CX (pliers used more than scissors by me) and a victorinox rambler. This is in my own country of course. When I travel abroad (especially Europe) for work, i usually just carry a Victorinox pioneer X. Easy to obtain, non controversial.

DCA. You had an example of a knife that works well in the trades on the table. The mariners knife with the marlinespike. The problem with that one in particular is it is made by Schrade. I've been in the trades my whole life and I used to have a Buck made marlinespike knife that lasted much longer than the Schrade. Marlinespike can be used to untie knots and break loose shackle pins, which is very useful around crane operations. The marlinespike also serves as your pocket clip. It would be nice to have a manufacturer build a quality mariners knife with premium steel and construction that would hold up to a tradesman use.

my EDC combo is a bradford guardian 3.5 in vanadis 4e, my victorinox tinker as my keychain knife, and usually one of my spyderco’s primarily the manix 2 lw rex45 or my native in magnacut, as well as a wharncliffe k390 endura and a KC exclusive pm2 cruwear depending on the day and weather

Keep up the great videos. Just a quick note, I'm a huge super tinker fan, carried one for years, but other considerations I'd suggest: For urban EDC Victorinox compact (I paired one of these up with a spiderco tenacious and a leatherman sidekick for my wife) and the Victorinox pioneer X alox (specifically the x for the scissors) is a honourable mention (the alox models have thicker tools than the standard).

My tradie blade that I think is a stronger contender than those presented: Cold Steel Recon 1 mini tanto. Triad lock, more comfortable than Air Lite and slim in pocket, 3" blade in Aus-10A that's decent enough while being easy to sharpen, hollow grind makes up for stout blade thickness and a BRILLIANT chisel tip. It's covered a ton of ground for me including chiselling out hinge pockets when I needed to hang a new door and didn't have any other tools handy.

Folding utility knives are great for trades. Simply replace the razor when dull and get right back to work.

What affordable knife deserve to be bought several time (4 -5 time) so you could put one in your tool box, emergency kit, car kit, etc. For me, it is the Boker Atlas. It is not the only knife in those kits (usually there is a CKRT M16 tanto not too far), but the atlas always deliver

Sharon Steel was in the town of Sharon, PA. My grandfather worked for them. I have a folding knife (can't remember the brand or steel right now) that I wrote my name on the back of the leather sheath in marker when I was around 5 or 6 years old. The employees were told that steel from their factory was used in that specific model knife. I think that qualifies it as a heirloom....

As an ex-soldier, my woods/hunting carry was a Kabar, and a Victorinox Camper that did most of my slicing (the Camper has an excellent saw blade, excellent can opener, and corkscrew). A space blanket, magnesium fire starter, small sharpening rod, and needlenose pliers, were in a small kit. No, no multitool.

I'm a chef and always carry a pocket knife in the 4 inch range, a swiss army knife( always with scissors), knipex xs, a pen,sharpie, and a pocket sharpener. I can still do my job with this set-up if i dont have my chef knives with me.

I am in golf course maintenance. I carry a para 3 lw, knipex 4” cobra pliers, pokka pen, lynch nw pry bar and an Olight i3t flashlight. If I need anything more I have a leatherman rebar and a am Lenard 6” soil knife in my golf cart.

I’ve been thinking about my every day carry knives and gotten a little bored with my Spyderco that I’ve carried for years and years. I recently added a Victorinox Rambler to my keychain and I so love it. I’ve been looking for a sub-3” blade folder and really enjoying all of your KnifeCenter videos. I really like the look of the Civivi Elementum and it seems to perform well. I had one sitting in my Amazon shopping cart for days. But, today, I went on the Knife Center website and found the brown micarta version steeply discounted. Even with shipping, it was still $17 less than Amazon. Next, I’m thinking about a multi-tool to keep in my day pack and thinking of a larger Swiss Army Knife to round out any situations I might encounter. Do you have any recommendations? Hey DCA I have a dilemma and need some help. I’m looking for a traditional style knife with a lock back and no pocket clip. Not a removable but a knife with no clip. Preferably one that’s made with modern steel and under 3 inches. I have a native chief and would like a back up knife. @acid6urns definitely go with the m4 version with aluminum handles. I bought the 3v when it was released and from experience I can tell you I wouldn't trust it with any hard work. They may have fixed the issue now, but I don't know.

I'm a chef and always carry either a spyderco police or endura for the length ( if it won't slice a tomato, it's too short) and some sort of swiss army knife( depends on my mood and always a model with scissors) ,knipex xs ( can be used as tweezers in a " pinch") and either work sharp or victorinox pocket sharpeners. This covers all bases and I can still do my job if my chef knives get left at home....you can get a lot done with 4 inches of properly sharpened steel.

Wishing more companies followed the 3 inch option. Most jurisdictions is 3 inches. 3and 1 eighth etc. Don't make it. Many knives I liked are too long to pass legal. Limits sales and sales and use. 😢

DCA, could you please help with finding a classic knife with a modern touch, such as the CRKT Ken Onion Redemption, the Terrain 365 Otter or any Jack Wolf. Living in Canada our selection is a bit more limited but the prices are substantially more. For instance the Gunslinger Jack s90v with Nebula Fat Carbon is $349.99us ($476.88ca) from Knife Center but is $524.99ca at Blades Canada. I would like to keep the cost $300.00ca or less. David, you are still wrong in defining outright what something is by definition. You are correct to say that: "...in my mind..." and have your own personal opinion. However, in offering publicly stated definition outright, Merriam Webster's gives a definition of "Heirloom" as "something of special value handed down from one generation to another" which means a knife could be an heirloom knife.
