I also think people like them because they are large and hefty. A spey blade, especially if hollow ground, is also handy for many camp chores, spreading peanut butter, and opening packages without piercing too much.

I have a CS case trapper. I really like it as I use the clip for eating with and the spey is great for draw cuts.

If you don't care for the spay blade, you might like a Case Trapperlock. They replaced the spay blade with a slick operating liner lock. Works great! Also the Case Mini Trapper can be had with screwdriver cap lifter. Those would be my choices. (Favorite patterns? Copperhead and Canoe) Thanks for the video!

And there you have it. I probably will add a Trapper lock to my Case Collection some day, just not a Standard Trapper... unless of course somebody gives me a Case Standard Trapper! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Tobias It has been quite a few years since I've worked cattle and used the spay blade for what's it was designed for. But I still like trappers and stockman knives. But for you have you checked out Case's Slimline Trapper? The one I have is kinda like a toothpick. Single, long, slim blade. You might like it. Nice video.

I collected stockmans for years on the farm but now have crossed over to Trappers. Now that said my favorite Trapper is the WRCase Trapperlock which has a clip blade that locks and even has a pocket clip. Also would love it if Case would come out with a Trapper with two blades one being a shorter pen or coping blade. Thinking GEC might be more likely to get there but who knows.

I like the trapper as I use the clip blade for general utility and the spey blade is an excellent food prep knife. Its not my favorite pattern but it's in my top 5.
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Travis Perry, never thought of the spay blade for food prep. Suppose it would make a good cheese blade. I’m positive it round spread butter better than the clip. I’d say most people who use slip joint would put a trapper in their top five. Im sure a Stockman of some type is normally there as well. Thanks for watching and your tips on what to do with the spay blade.
@travisperry45155 жыл бұрын
I just found your channel via your top 5 slipjoint video and ive been enjoying your content. You have a nice collection. I use my trapper for apples and mangos and such and the extra length makes it better than my stockman in that regard. The trapper is an excellent outdoors knife. It can clean fish and I've heard many people use only a trapper for field dressing game. But in my pocket today I have a sodbuster jr and a mini copperhead. A great combo.

Travis Perry, Happy you’re enjoying my channel. I try to add new content at least once a week. No doubt, quite a bit of my content is on Scout Knives and Swiss Army Knives but I’ve got a little bit of everything ( even a trapper designed with the Angler in mind. LOL). If you’re enjoying the channel, please consider subscribing , if you haven’t already. Again, thanks for watching.

Getting my first trapper as a gentleman's knife. I think its aesthetic is really nice and that also helped make it popular. I think I will use the spey as a butter/steak knife, since that's the only real thing I'll be close to skinning in nyc.😁

Loved that Schrade! I never carried a trapper till I got one of the Boker Arbolito belt sheaths. My favorite pattern is the stockman. My favorite Cases are 1. Mini Copperlock 2. Swayback Gent 3. Med. Texas Jack 4. Sodbuster Jr
@jackslapp90733 жыл бұрын
My favorite is the Sodbuster or Opinel. I never knew what I was missing until I bought one. My second favorite is a $5.00 linerlock knife from Winchester. It is 3 3/4" closed: 6 1/2" open. The blade is a simple spear point shape with the point centered on the blade; more pointed than a standard camp knife blade, but not as pointed as a dagger/stilleto; half serrated (not a necessary feature for me and prefer non-serrated) hollow ground. With a pocket clip. Another knife I didn't know I would like until I had one. Should have bought two or three at the time. I can't think of any traditional folder to compare it with.

Trappers, are okay. I guess my issue is more with all the hype and the sales pitches. If the knife was the greatest knife ever produced then you shouldn't have to tell me that every time you try to sell it me.

Im one of the rare ones that actually uses a trapper for what it was designed for... trapping. And it works fantastic. Though i never bother with the more expensive ones like case anymore. Not because theyre bad, but when you take a knife to a stone 10-20 times a day, theyre worn out in a year or two. And way easier to replace a marbles or rough ryder than a case at 3X the price.

@shadowstalker1306662 жыл бұрын
A barehead trapper is one that doesnt have a bottom bolster.
@desertratedc9596 Жыл бұрын
Its hard to say but i would make an argument for 4 patterns being americas best selling favorite knives pre-WW1. The barlow/penny knife, pen knife, cattle knives, and then different flavors of the muskrat or equal end jack with one blade on either end. I have seen plenty of resources quote these as the most popular patterns due to their purposes. I have to mention i have even seen the premium stockman mentioned as dominating the market in various sizes and configurations making it a great choice for not just the horse and cowboys but the everyday man. So i might even lump it in with the cattle knife further boosting that general knife configuration. As you said the pen knife was the most carried in the world for its mentioned name sakes but i am sure thats why the barlow eventually later got versions with the pen blade along with the mid to smaller sized stockman. I want to like the trapper but personally i dont think it counts as a everymans knife due to its lack of pen knife and personally i think the much more recent standard copperhead is a massive and sorely needed update to the two blade jack fpr everyday use by normal people who arent out there trapping or hunting everyday but also proves why something like the stockman/cattle knife, barlow, simple penny knife or pen knife was a better option for the everage towns folk or working man then the more niche (although still crucial a role just not the majorityl) of hunter/trapper and even then like you said, if they carried a folding onife then it was more then likely a moose or muskrate style folder and not a trapper that only got popularized by case after WW2.
@KnifeChatswithTobias Жыл бұрын
Some really excellent observations. Case sells so many Trappers because they push the pattern. It's an easy one for them to make and those two long blades allows for all sorts of blade etchings for commemoratives! Other companies jumped on to the collectible band wagon and use the same brainwashing mantra of this is the knife all the cool kids want. It is funny when you look at the pocket knives being issued and used in WWII. Nary a Trapper anywhere.

Hope you wont be offended if I would order one from Case, bone or deer antler handles, love to old timer design to it.

Alexandru von Carstein Zarovich , the Trapper is one of the most popular traditional patterns around. I’m sure some day I’ll also end up with a Case Trapper, hopefully just not a standard. And most likely it’ll be stag or some type of exotic handle. I just hope some one else pays for it. 😽😺

I don't do alot of neutering but I still like the mini and tiny trappers . especially the one Case makes with warncliff secondary blades . but even the spey is fine on a tiny trapper . Ironically the stockman is close to my favorite pattern and it has a spey blade . but the spey on a stockman is small enough to use to lots of tasks .

Quite an informative video on the Trapper! I knew they were extremely popular, though never knew they were a Case + Madison Avenue creation! I am a bit neutral on them, though I have a few. One knife company that did truly produce the the American knife that won the west is Dexter-Russell and their fixed blades. In fact Russell, prior to the merger, was synonymous with Quality in 19th century America. Thanks for the excellent video!
@KnifeChatswithTobias6 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video and I'm right there with you about Dexter Russell. Absolutely fantastic and under-rated knife company. They make knives to use not to collect and they do a damn good job at what they're doing. And I agree they were very much there with the westward expansion of the United States! Thanks for watching.

I've seen a Case trapper that had a wharncliff blade instead of a spay blade. The trapper looked far nicer with a wharncliff instead of a spay. I saw it on a knife-selling show called Cutlery Corner, but other than there, I don't know where that particular knife is available. Also, you could try a slimline trapper, that just has the single main blade without the spay, as does a trapperlock. My favorite kind of trapper, though, is the razor trapper. Instead of the spay it has a straight razor, but it's just like a regular trapper other than that difference. It looks great and quite uncommon. --Darren
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
Winnipeg Gentleman, I’ve actually thought about picking up a trapper with a wharncliffe and I agree about single blade trappers. Cutlery Corner offers quite a few decent knives. As long as you steer clear of some of the low priced Frost Brands you can actually get some good deals, even if you’re a trapper fan. Thanks for watching.
@winnipeggentleman56415 жыл бұрын
I've bought a few knives from Cutlery Corner and you're right, the lower priced knives are should be avoided, their quality is really on the low side. My absolute favorite kind of knife is the stiletto, the traditional Italian-looking kind. Cutlery Corner rarely, very rarely, has those kinds available, but I've bought a few from them when they've been available - and of course the quality is really bad. A couple stilettos I bought from them, after handling them for just a few weeks, they now instantly make my hand smell like metal. A very strong metallic smell is coming right through the scales (yellow and red comp) and if you handle the knives even for just 30 seconds, your hand smells like metal all day long. Lol, needless to say that kind of put me off Cutlery Corner, but I guess they're still okay if you want to buy knives just because they're pretty and have no intention of ever picking them up or using them. Thanks for the great knife videos, I love seeing the collections people have. --Darren

I have to admit. I learned the lesson the hard way as well. They have some good deals but if it looks to good to be true, it probably is!
@KnifeChatswithTobias5 жыл бұрын
@@winnipeggentleman5641, For me, the only thing I would recommend from Cutlery Corner is the Case knives and maybe the Hen & Roosters unless you are just willing to gamble. And if you do any comparison shopping, you will notice that their prices fro Case knives is not much different then anywhere else and some times higher, especially if it is Cutlery Corner Exclusive. As the show is a Jim Frost Production and Hen & Rooster is his top brand, the price for an H&R are slightly lower but not enough to make a difference. They also offer stuff via Master Cutlery (Elk Ridge) and some of that is okay for economy brand knives. But most everything else is a Frost low end brand or something from SZCO. Buyer Beware! This is the crap you find in the flea market bargain bins. That's my opinion
@winnipeggentleman56415 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you just said about Cutlery Corner, definitely. When it comes to pricing, it's even worse for me if I order anything from there since I'm in Canada and they're in Tennessee, which means a very expensive shipping charge for me, not to mention the currency exchange rate. Basically, any price for any knife I see on CC, I have to basically double it due to all the extra charges, so none of their stuff is a bargain for me at all. I've only put in a few orders with them in the past due to that, and even though there was an okay one here and there within the orders. most of them were of very low quality, unfortunately. However, even with that being said, I do still like watching CC every week, simply because I love knives and they do show some that really are very beautiful...if, of course, you're willing to never handle or use them, but just put them on a shelf for their beauty, heheh.

@slipjointyjan5482 жыл бұрын
The most collected knife being the knife made purposefully with the most variation and collectibility seems like a a bit of a paradox. Other than general use was there any reason the spay blade was included? It is used on several cattle/farm related patterns due to its intended purpose but why would it creep into other patterns and uses?

That tomato will never have a baby, now! I think my issues are not so much with the functionality of the knife as it is the over use of the pattern for commemoratives, special editions, and the way every knife is suddenly being called a Trapper, No doubt, it is a popular knife.
