Kniphofia division

A demonstration on summer Kniphofia divisions. A perennial favourite, though i'm not keen on the things. The importance of cutting back the leaves is explained.

Exactly what I was looking for, I have 1 huge plant that quit blooming for me last couple years it would look like it was going to turn colors but wouldn't ever fully bloom out so I was wanting to know when and how I could get some plants from it out of the ground, you answered my question! I was so afraid of damaging the plant but you make it look fairly simple, I am hoping by dividing it up maybe can get a few plants but hopefully start the original plant to start producing blooms again. I live in Texas so it is very hot here our summer but going to give it a try. Thank you!

I plan to transplant and divide my red hot poker plant this spring, in (updated) US zone 8A. It looks as if one can get many divisions out of a mature stand of them. I think I shall transplant them to my back wooded area, which has high shade.

Thanks for showing how to divide Kniphofia. I just bought at Rural King but only the roots. I had it before but it didn't come back. But I learned that it likes full sun.

I love Red Hot Pokers; I, too, am curious if the clumps can be put back into the ground instead of in pots. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I had a huge clump that was not getting enough sun, they were tough to dig out!

Instead of planting in pots can you just replant them back in the yard?

yes... i got a plant from home depot and i divided it up and put into my garden just fine
