It was like a horror movie with all the chopping! 😉 Hope they grow on well. I still favor the variety where the blooms open red and fade to yellow, but the orange is nice too.

Great video! I saw a bunch of these plants along the side of my street and never knew what they were. Now that I found out, I think I’m going to try to cut some from the road to plant at my house. I wonder if deer & gophers would eat them.

I inherited 3 gigantic clumps of these when I bought current home. Snakes were finding them a great place to camp in summer months. The tubers were gigantic, a darker orange than a carrot. I have managed to remove 2 of 3 and have no intentions of keeping any. Snakes are my worst phobia and the camp grounds are closed. Lol

I also dislike most red hot pokers because of their large proportion of foliage to flower but this miniature is different. I can't comment on the snake though as we have none in Ireland.

Smart advice at the end. I ordered some red hot pokers that arrived yesterday. Want to start them in pots on bay window shelf. Living in zone 6 USA what month or time is best to transplant outside? Appreciate your video.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Kniphofias or red hot pokers are supposedly hardy from US zones 5-9 so they should be okay in zone 6. Normally autumn is a great time to plant things outside however, anything that is borderline hardy is best planted out in spring. Hope this helps.

I plan on transplanting and dividing a mature stand of Kniphofia this spring in (updated) US zone 8A. Can the divisions be planted directly into elsewhere in my garden without potting them? Thank you.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 6 ай бұрын
Here in Ireland the Kniphofia could be divided and planted directly into the ground in spring. We are roughly zone 9.

I live in Colorado, USA. My Red Hot Pokers are going wild and taking over my garden. So I duG up several and gave them to my son just starting his garden. Can they go right into the ground after dividing or do they have to go into pots first?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 жыл бұрын
If you keep yours hydrated, they should be fine to go straight into the ground. Smaller divisions are most vulnerable. Good luck.

My Kniphofia is looking dreadful. It's only flowered for me once, caused from the stress from the heat we had. I think it's time for a repot.

How long did you keep them in pots? Would you overwinter them in pots in Zone 6?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 3 жыл бұрын
I kept them in pots overwinter and planted them out in spring when the weather had warmed up a little. I guess the cooler your zone, the bigger the plant needs to be and the later in the season it should be planted out. Plants take a while to establish and a late frost before they have fully established could kill them. Hope this helps.

I bought 2 Kniphofia uvaria match match each other as identical twins. The into Aug. 1 grew into 3' - 4' strong grass. I is holding well under strong winds. The other went in a different direction. Starting fading but not dead. i TRANSPLANTED IT . I found the root ball lost about 85% of its' density. Not dead yet.( both got same treatment) What is wrong.?

Hello Rachel. I bought four root Stocks of kniphopia from one of our garden centers but was only able to grow one successfully into a mature plant which I planted in the ground in a gopher wire basket. It has now grown into a decent mass , about a foot in its footprint and some babies are growing out of the basket. I would live to be able to make New plants from it, but I am reluctant to dig the whole plant, wire basket and all. Do you think leaving it alone is better than disturbing it? Is it healthy for the plant to have the New babies growing out of the wire basket? Thank you for your advice.

Hello there and thank you for your comment. Pokers should be at least four years old before you divide them. Divide red hot pokers in spring. Cut through the fleshy roots, keeping a growing point on each of the newly split plants and repot in a mix of compost and grit. Water them well at the beginning of the growing season to establish the new year’s growth. Hope this helps.

Ah yes. I could have put the cut flowers in a vase but sometimes when you're working in the garden that makes more work than it's worth. Well that's my opinion anyway. I feel I am talking to someone who would have immediately brought those pokers in to a vase 😊
