Depends on what yarn you use and how big you make the shawl. In a fingering, sock or lace yarn, or even a light worsted you should be able to knit a decent sized shawl. If you use a heavier weight yarn you'll most likely want to get a longer needle.
@iknitwithcatfur10 жыл бұрын
+Al Melendez yes you can use any other stitch you want. Basically, increase until you have enough sts to work at least one repeat of the stitch, then you add more repeats of the pattern as you have enough sts to do so.

I don't remember exactly. You need to knit a gauge swatch using the specific yarn and needles you want to use and go from there. Since everyone knits differently, and can have a different gauge even using the exact same needles and yarn, you might use more or less yarn than someone else. You could probably get a decent sized shawl with a skein of Red Heart Super Saver.

Straight (single pointed) needles come in a variety of lengths: 7, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14 and 16 inches, so you should be able to fit a sufficient number of stitches for a decent sized shawl onto the longest straights using fine weight yarn. And have you looked at Ravelry? There are over 15,000 free shawl patterns there, you might like some of those too.

how would you use a second color of yarn with the knit 3 yarn over and knit pattern for the thicker border? I want to use yellow as the border and red as the center of the shawl and not having to add yarn every time? Any thought on how to use a second yarn for the outer border?
@iknitwithcatfur9 жыл бұрын
You can knit the border separately then attach it to the body of the shawl. Or, after finishing the shawl body, you can pick up and knit around with the border color.

I have 80 cm circlular needles, but will that be enough? when i think bout the math i don't really think its enough - it would be nice if some1 had the answer :P Great video, thank you

You have made this very, very easy to do! But I have one question-you know how you've done the first yarn-over? Well, I knit English style, so how do I do the first yarn-over in my case? All of your methods of knitting a shawl are very easy-it's just the only one about the first yarn-over for English style knitting. Update: I believe that I figured it out.
@iknitwithcatfur6 жыл бұрын
Did you get it? Just make a yarn over as you would normally make a yarn over anywhere else along the row. It can be a little tricky when it is at the beginning though, it helps to keep a finger on it so it doesn't get away from you :-)

Hi, I'm a beginner in knitting but I really liked yours "sailor's knot" tutorial and was wondering if it's possible to use it in this "triangle shawl". How to start and keep going with stitches? Thank you! :)
@iknitwithcatfur8 жыл бұрын
+Idalia as Hi! Basically, once you've made enough increases so that you have as many stitches as required for whatever stitch pattern you are using, you can add another repeat of the stitch. What I do is use stitch markers to sandwich my increases, and then once I have enough to add a repeat of the stitch pattern, I reset the markers. I personally like to do top down triangle shawls, starting with a garter tab cast on, but you can start at the bottom and go up. Here is a link to a video showing how I use stitch markers to keep track of my increases so I know when to add another pattern repeat, and a video for the garter tab cast on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJypfGqOfK6Fas0 and the garter tab cast on: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHmYonR9ZdaCerc Also, here is a link to some cheat sheets that might help you out. They are worked in garter stitch, but you can use any stitch pattern you like: www.laylock.org/blog/2011/05/free-shawl-knitting-cheat-sheet/

I'm knitting a shawl on size 8 circular needle with kfb all rows .how many stitches do I need before binding off
@iknitwithcatfur7 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how big you want it, the weight of yarn you're using and what your gauge is. One thing you can do is put a long life line in, take out the needle and try it on. If you're happy with the size, (keeping in mind it will grow a bit when blocked) put your needle back in and bind off.

Madam every thing is clear except one How much should be the hight and circumference This is my first project knitting a shawl So please help me 2) the circular needle may be small is there any way to extend ?
@iknitwithcatfur2 жыл бұрын
This is really just a basic guide - you can make shawls as big as you like. You can "try it on" as you go, keeping in mind that it will be a bit bigger after blocking. Yarn weight/needle size and your gauge play a role as well in the size. Circular needles come up to 60 inches; I am not aware of any way to join them to make longer needles, but I can't imagine any shawl needing a needle longer than that. There are a lot of patterns to be found online, you may wish to search through some of them to get an idea of yarn weight/needles used for the size shawl you would like to make. My personal preference for shawls is DK weight yarn or lighter, and I find that a 40 inch circular is sufficient.

Hey! I'm a beginning knitter and was reading through the comments when I found that you actually might need to increase your rows every other stitch. Is that true?
@iknitwithcatfur7 жыл бұрын
I would not increase every other STITCH, but you can make increases on every other ROW. Increasing on every row will grow the shawl more quickly, while increasing on every other row will go slower. On the shawls that I make for myself or for my patterns, increases are usually made on every right side row only. Check out this basic shawl shape info, it is handy for showing how many increases and where they are placed determine the shape of the shawl you end up with www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/5-basic-shawl-shapes-cheat-sheet

Can I ask what gauge yarn and size needle you are using? Would you recommend going up a needle size to what the yarn recommends to get more of a drape?
@iknitwithcatfur7 жыл бұрын
The Diamond Mulberry Merino is an aran weight yarn and the Patons Classic is worsted; I used US 10 needles, Cubics from Knitter's Pride. If you're following a pattern, I would just go with what is required, since the designer should have taken that into account. If you are winging it, or there is no recommendation in the pattern, the best thing to do is start with the recommended needle size on the ball band; knit a swatch and block it if you plan to block the finished item. Then see how you like the feel and drape of the swatch. If it is too tight for your liking, go up a needle size or two. If you're knitting lace, you'll definitely want to use a larger needle than recommended so that the stitches open up when blocked. Also, different fibers have different drape qualities; merino does have nice drape in the lighter weights, however alpaca, silk, soybean and milk fibers have much more drape because they don't have the 'memory' of merino wool. So, that is something else to keep in mind and is where making a swatch comes in handy.

Hey, I have a weird question maybe you can answer. I had a pattern for a triangle shawl. Right side rows were K 2, yo, knit to center, yo before and after center stitch, K to last 2 stiches, yo, K last 2. Wrong side rows were purl. I did not end up with a triangle, but with a diamond shape. Any idea what I did wrong?
@iknitwithcatfur8 жыл бұрын
When you say diamond, I picture something with a point at the bottom and a point at the top, which shouldn't be what you got using those instructions. Sounds like you started decreasing after a certain point to get the diamond point at the top.
@nancycampbell79598 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for getting back to me! No, I did zero decreasing. That's why it's weird. In looking at your tutorials, I notice you give the bottom point a good tug after each row. Could that be the difference?
@iknitwithcatfur8 жыл бұрын
Nancy Campbell It's worth a try, although I've never had a diamond when not pulling the bottom to straighten. Quite unusual :-) I assume you are working bottom up?
@nancycampbell79598 жыл бұрын
Yes, bottom up. Right sides with 4 increases -- 2 in middle, and 1 on ea. end -- and wrong sides just purling, right until I cast off. At which point I discovered I had a kite-shaped shawl :( Very baffling! Anyway, it's a chance to tell you how much I enjoy your tutorials and your teaching style. You are a wonderful mentor.
