How to knit "Don Valley Butterfly" - the EASIEST SYMMETRICAL triangular SHAWL/BAKTUS. DIAGONAL triangle. Garter stitch - only KNIT STITCHES. Icelandic bind off.
Diagonal knitting. Started from the tip on one side and worked towards the opposite side. Knit until you are happy with the size or until run out of the yarn.
In the video I used 2x100g (~400m each) skeins of a fingering weight yarn, but it can also be made with a sock yarn, sport or dk, or even lace.
This shawl is named after a butterfly I sighted at the valley of the Don river in Toronto. The triangular shape of its wings resembles the shape of the shawl. Its softness and lightness are the continuous inspiration for my knitting.
Free complete video pattern step-by-step from start to finish. Reversible knitting pattern. Step-by-step for beginners.

Thank you. For some reason my mind cannot follow the typical shawl pattern. I don't know why. I've tried several times. But this is such a simple, easy to understand, direct technique. Thank you for sharing this. And I also learned a different bind off technique, and I can also see why my edge stitches has been so loosey goosey. It's because of the way I've been holding my yarn. I've been inadvertently stretching out the edge stitches, and they look terrible. When you make more videos I would suggest that you invite people to speed up the rate of the video if they want. I'm kind of impatient, and at first the video felt too slow. I think it's fine for some people. I wanted to hear what you had to say so I sped up the video to 1.25. It was perfect at that rate for me. It was neither too fast, nor too slow. Oh and the use of the white yarn really makes it very clear, and easy to see what you're doing. Best of luck with your Channel.

@@irinarevo Just following up. I've knitted about a 4-inch triangle. I love it. It makes sense. I can see how it works just by folding it in half. Why didn't anyone tell me about this before? And I've been knitting Continental. I have in the past, but it felt too unnatural. I decided to try it again. If I slow down and don't expect to do it quickly, I can do it. The bonus is stitches that are much more even than when throwing the yarn in the English Style. You're welcome about the feedback, and thank you again.

It is an International knit (and crochet) community where you can join groups, buy patterns and/or download free patterns, make friends, watch what they are making, write them kind messages, make your own notebook with what you are making yourself and post pictures of it, and so on. It is not the same as knitting in a group in real life but it has other charmes.

@irinarevo
@irinarevo 2 жыл бұрын
I am glad you like it! If you need the sides to be identical, then you knit from the central tip up and make symmetrical increases on both sides. The shawl in the video is worked diagonally from a side tip. The increase side is the longest side of the triangle. The two short sides - one is a slip stitch edge, the other - Icelandic bind off. The triangle is symmetrical, but the edges look slightly different.

Thank you for sharing. I've been looking for a true triangle shawl. I love it. For the bind off with the crochet hook, are the hook and needle the same size or can you go up a size with the hook to help with the bind off being looser/strechier? Have a wonderful and blessed day. 😊
@irinarevo
@irinarevo 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, you can go up with the hook size, as long as the bind off stitches are 1.5 times (or more) bigger than the regular stitches. Or you can pull the edge down while binding off - like I do with my left hand that also holds the edge - to stretch the stitches. Whatever works for you best!

Hi Irena. I like this technique for the triangle. I want to ask how it can be done with the Moss stitch pattern? Is that possible? Also just to confirm - the wrong side is the with the rows that start with a slip stitch and do not increase? Lastly is it possible to make more of a point and start with 1 or 2 stitches rather than 3? Thank very much for this careful and patient tutorial.
@irinarevo
@irinarevo Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Steph! I haven’t tried it with the moss stitch pattern. Garter has a different gauge which is partially why this is a symmetrical triangle. I would swatch. The shawl is double sided, so there isn’t a wrong or right side, only the edge with the increases looks slightly different. Yes, you can totally start with 1 or 2 stitches.

@irinarevo

No worries. No, it’s not the row with the increase at the beginning. It’s the row that started with the slip stitch that you shape the corner at the end of, then turn around and do the bind off.

Hello I was looking for a pattern to make a buttoned vest with points at the bottom front, rather than a straight edge. Could I simply stop the increases or would it be better to cast off the triangle portions and attach each to the front panels of the vest? Thank you! Have a lovely day!
@irinarevo
@irinarevo Жыл бұрын
Hello Steph! One of the sides is a straight edge, the other one is slanted, so theoretically if you continue without increasing you should get a straight section. I would swatch a small triangle with an added straight section and see if it looks right. Whether to cast it off I think it’s your decision as a designer to decide what looks best. I hope it works for you. Have fun creating!

On the increase side 1-2 or 3 stitches from the edge make a yarn over, in the next row knit that loop. This will become an eyelet as well as an increase - so you would not need to make other increases.

The cast on tip is one of the side tips (wing tips). The bottom tip will be at the corner of the straight side (the side without the increases) and the bind off side. The opposite side tip (wing tip) will be at the corner of the increase side and the bind off side. This is a diagonal shawl worked from one side tip to the other. :)

Hi! When you bind off, is that the same as to decreasimg the number of stitches or is it for closing the project? I’m new to knitting 🙈

Hi Mia! This is a diagonal knitting. Increases only, no decreases. You knit until you like the size of the shawl, or run out of the yarn, you’ll always have a symmetrical triangle no matter when you stop. Then the last step - Icelandic bind off to finish.

@@irinarevo Hi again! I might be a little behind 🙃 I'm not sure I understand. I followed your recipe but before I found yours, I was told by some other knitters that I will need to begin decreasing when I have little over half of my yarn left, so now I am confused 🙈

In my video I use garter stitch. The mathematics/proportions of the garter stitch pattern are different. Even the swatch at the beginning is already a symmetrical triangle. So if you follow the steps in my video, you’ll have a symmetrical triangle always, no matter when you stop. No need for decreases.

@@irinarevo Oh I think I understand now. Thanks for the help! When should I start binding off? When I have half my amount of yarn left or?

You bind-off when you think that the shawl is big enough, or when you used up most of your yarn (just leave some length of yarn for binding off). Then do one row of bind-off, and you are done.

How many stitches do you have to have before decreasing?to make this pattern work
@irinarevo
@irinarevo 3 жыл бұрын
There are no decreases - this is a diagonal knitting. Start at the side tip and keep increasing until you run out of the yarn or happy with the size. At any moment you will have a symmetrical triangle.
