Thanks for this terrific video! In my lifetime, I have frogged more socks than I can remember, but I just managed to make one sock from this detailed instruction video. Long time knitter, first time with the mysterious magic loop. I had to start over from scratch three times, but I finally have a sock! On to sock #2! I can't thank you enough!

Wonderfully clear instructions, the best I have ever seen. Just finished my first sock on my first attempt at using magic needles. It’s not the best as I used old left over bits of DK but I wanted a wellie sock anyway. 😅 Now for the second. Thank you.

Pro tip for people who, like me, just can not get rid or that line where you've started a new needle: I never let my right hand needle be empty, I return a few stitches to it after I get set up to work a new bunch of stitches. Definitely makes life easier to have a beginning of round marker since the stitches don't have their specific "assigned" needles the way they do in regular magic loop. It's a bit fiddly at first, but once I got used to it it barely takes a second and it's worth it to me - I've tried every trick to not get that line, but this is the only thing that's worked for me. I've only ever knit socks on magic loop - a set of interchangeable needles seemed like the most versatile knitting needle variety to start out with, and I've not regretted it! I'm trying short circulars next, I think, but at some point I want to try DPNs as well.

I tried to do the German Twisted Cast On a year ago, but I couldn't find anyone who could show it that well. So, I gave up. I decided I wanted to do it for a golf club cover so I forced myself to learn it. That's when I found West Knits. It was so lovely that he showed it so well. For that, I was so grateful to him, but I do wish I had found this first. You go through it so slowly and easily. I'm guessing it didn't come up because I was looking specifically for the cast on and not at a part of a project. Still, thank you for showing it so well.

That tip about the yarn over at around the hour and five minute marker was awesome. I literally made that exact mistake last night while working on a socks. Seeing you spell it out was a game changer and immediately made me aware I made a mistake and what I can do next time I'm in that same situation. I was so curious what was wrong as it just didn't feel the same when I knitted it.

I just ripped back my first sock. I was decreasing and the stitch count was not going down! (Not your pattern). But this video shows my problem exactly! I was pulling the yarn over and then knitting it at the end of the row! Thank you for the excellent explanation!

Just finished my very first sock. I bought your pattern and followed your tutorial and it's turned out really well. You talked about washing and blocking but how is this done. I would love some advice please 😊

For socks, I usually use the hand wash setting on my washing machine and then just hang them up to dry.

Yes, if you're knitting in the round. But if you're working on the heel flap (and knitting flat) you don't.

Depending on the shape of your foot, if it would fit better to just end the sock when you reach the last 5 or 10 stitches could you just kitchener them together at that point, rather than continuing to knit decrease rows?

Definitely! You can certainly do that if it makes a better-fitting toe. A lot of people don't like to do the Kitchener graft so I was showing one of the alternatives.

Confession: I've never actually done kitchener. I've watched it a hundred times, and it seems a bit complicated to get started. But for my hard-working but overly-sensitive toes, it would be worth learning. I would pay good money for socks made that way, but they don't sell them, I suppose because there's no way to do it on a machine! Thank you for responding :) @@NerdyKnitting

I don't really have a favorite method. It depends on what type of sock I'm knitting - for plain socks, I usually use DPNs, for stranded knitting I prefer short circulars.

I'm excited to make this sock. I do have two questions. First, I want to knit a shadow wrapped short row heel instead of a gusset heel. Do I need to knit a few inches after the cuff before I start the heel? Second, how do you measure a sock circumference? I know my foot circumference is a size 8. Thank you!

As long as you know how to replace a heel flap and gusset with a short row heel you should be fine (and I would plan on at least an inch for the back heel before starting the short row heel. To measure the sock circumference, I check my gauge on the bottom of sock (on the Stockinette portion) and determine the stitches in one inch then multiply that by the stitches in the full circumference of the sock. That tells you how many inches in that circumference.

It can be a bit tricky the first time but shouldn't hold you back from giving it a try!

You could use a crochet hook to pick up stitched.

I tried the magic loop for first time yesterday to make a pair of mitts...not sure where I went wrong, but in the turn, I end up knitting on the same row, so only one row was being knit on.... you make it look so easy.. i pulled it out three times. then just knit it flat, then had to seam it .not ideal. I was following someone else’s tutorial , so I’m going to give this a go, again today, with your instructions... also this is kind of fiddly for me... is magic loop or 😢using DPNs, the only options . I definitely do not like the DPN option..but willing to try ML again, thank you in advance for any additional tips . 💕🧶💫

There are a few other options besides Magic Loop and DPNs - two circulars and flexible DPNs are two other methods you could try.
