ABOUT THE FIRST STAR SWEATER.
The second design in the Esenique Essentials series, created for beginners who want to learn how to knit all types of basic sweaters before moving on to more complicated patterns.
If you’re ready to knit your very first sweater or curious about trying a circular yoke design, the First Star Sweater is the perfect place to start.
It’s also a great foundation for those dreaming of stunning Nordic sweaters filled with color and texture.
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner.
METHOD: This sweater is knit seamlessly from the top down, starting with the neckline ribbing. German Short Rows are used to shape the back neck (optional). The yoke is formed with five rounds of increases, and then the body and sleeves are separated and knit in the round.
Make it your own: Choose your preferred length, neckline (crew or mock neck), and fit options.
SIZES: Available in 11 sizes: XXS-XS-S-M-L-XL-2XL-3XL-4XL-5XL-6XL. The sweater is designed with approximately 3-10 cm (1-4 inches) of positive ease*.
Size reference: I am wearing size M and am 168 cm (5’6”) tall, with a bust circumference of 91 cm (35.75”).
🍭 MATERIALS
1. YARN.
Gray and Mint sweaters: Knit in Drops Nepal yarn (65% Wool, 35% Alpaca), /10 ply / aran , 50 g/ 75 m or 1.8 oz/ 82 yards per skein, color 500, Light Gray and 8922, Soft Mint).
You will need: 9-9-10-11-12-14-14-16-16-17-18 50 grams/ 1.8 oz skeins for your size.
Beige sweater with a mock neck: Knit with Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino (Powder) held together with Soft Mohair (Soft Peach).
Yardage by size:
738(2XS) -738(XS) -820(S) -900(M) -984(L) -1148(XL) -1148(2XL) -1312(3XL) -1312(4XL) -1394(5XL) -1476(6XL) yards*.
For men: Consider adding an extra skein for longer sleeves or body length, if necessary.

2. CIRCULAR NEEDLES. *4.5 mm (US 7) and 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needles in the following lengths: 40 cm (16 inches) and 80 or 100 cm (31 or 40 inches).
*You can use the Magic Loop technique and work with one needle length of 80-100 cm (31-40 inches).
GAUGE is 16 sts x 22 rows in a 10x10 cm (4x4 inches) piece in stockinette stitch on 5.5 mm (US 9) needles (after blocking).

I love a yoke style sweater. I find the front of sweater fits and looks great, but the back has so much extra ease! Is there a way to reduce that extra fabric in the back on a yoke sweater???

Thank you for your comment! 😊 The First Star sweater has 3-10 cm (1-4 inches) of positive ease, so it’s already on the fitted side. If you'd like to reduce the extra fabric in the back, you can try going a size down and, during the dividing step, allocate more stitches to the front and fewer to the back. This adjustment can help create a more tailored fit.

Knitting newbie here- if you’re going to work through both legs of the double stitch as if it was one regular stitch, what’s the point of making the double stitch in the first place? It was originally one regular stitch before you slipped it and pulled the yarn over, right?

Great question! The purpose of creating the double stitch is to close the gap that forms when turning your work. It mimics the original stitch, but the “double” part ensures the fabric looks seamless when knitting back across. When you knit through both legs, it restores the stitch count while hiding the turn. That sounds like a great idea! The increases in this sweater happen throughout the entire yoke and are quite close to each other. To add a cable, you’d need to clear up the front section by rearranging the increases and placing them differently than written in the pattern. If you’ve knitted a circular yoke sweater before, you might find it easier to make these adjustments. Good luck, and I’d love to see how it turns out! 😊

Bonjour, je suis comme vous, je cherche à apprendre l’essentiel, c’est à dire : apprendre la mesure, calculer les nombres de mailles pour monter, de cette manière là, on reste indépendante des patrons. Et par cette occasion, j’ai compris que cette dame qui cherche à vendre les modèles toutes faites, comme cela, vous copiez tjrs, mais vous saurez jamais tricoter par vous même. J’ai bien vu que elle nous montre comment elle a fait, mais aucune explication.

Mes modèles sont conçus avant tout pour les tricoteurs débutants, afin de les aider à apprendre à tricoter des vêtements et à se familiariser avec les techniques de base. L’objectif n’est pas forcément de leur enseigner à tout calculer eux-mêmes, mais plutôt de leur donner confiance et de les guider dans la réalisation de projets qu’ils peuvent être fiers de porter.
