I really like the ones with the drawn out tails made into handles. Also, anytime you say chubster, you giggle. lol I'm just glad I'm not the only one.

Your knives look great and i really like the scales you made for them. I made my first knife from a regular file and it turned out pretty good. We have horses so we also have several old hoof files like the ones you showed in this video. I wondered if I should try to make knives from them and you are the first person I've seen do that. Unfortunately, I do not have a forge so I can't heat and hammer them smoother. The big rasp teeth were what concerned me. I am going to set up a cheap forge to heat treat but it wouldn't work like a real forge for shaping etc. I might just give it a try with one of the hoof files. I did order some 1084 5/32 2" wide to begin making knives hence the need to heat treat.

People don't realize how much work it is, I watch my dad from start to finish, knife makers never get paid enough for the hours they put in it, it's a passion Im ADHD I don't have the patience, I do help but I'm always afraid I'll mess up a knife, especially if your using ivory scales, it can be an expensive mess up, so I practice with scrap usually, he became a blade smith, now I wanna make my own, that reminds me, I have been looking for dragon scale scales, anyone know where I can get them.

I usually end up turning my old files into chisels, I can imagine you have to play around with the temper to get the right hardness right for a blade though?
@glenpaul3606 Жыл бұрын
My first knife was from a rusty old common file and I was very careful to keep it cool during grinding because I had no way to heat treat. The knife turned out good and it was hard enough to hold a good sharp edge.
@89schofe Жыл бұрын
@@glenpaul3606 I can see how that's possible, the steel is at it's maximum hardness. You could probably clamp aluminium bars to the spine to absorb the heat generated as your grinding

The one time I tried making a knife from a file I didn't know about the whole annealing thing. Made for slow going.
@kailacumings5 жыл бұрын
Omg yes! I should have mentioned that. That was one thing I hated about working with files, but having a nice forge helps speed up the process too
@corbinschleede31155 жыл бұрын
Yep i learnd that the hard way too. Also learned not all files are created equal. And some are just case hardened
@Jim_Cox5 жыл бұрын
With annealing first can you make a knife from a file using the material removal method with hand tools or would that be too difficult?
@kailacumings5 жыл бұрын
I always take my file heat treat it to temp then let it air cool to soften it up so I can drill my handle holes and grind it. Then I heat treat, quench, temper, then finish the knife

Just thinking out loud, please ignore. For over a decade people spoke about knife weights and I was just Meh who f'ing cares? But now I'm starting to look at lighter weight knives.
@kailacumings5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I mean its relevant if the weight matters to you and depends on what you're using the knife for. I like my folders to be lightweight so I dont have this big heavy thing in my pocket, but I like to have my bushcraft blades and machetes with some weight behind it.
@TheMemoryOfAllThat5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kaila. Good work. If I may suggest, lose the music. It's distracting.
