North Chinese Pugilism (so called "kung fu") has a lot of variations on this basic throwing technique. As I've been working on it in Shuaijiao/Buku (Mongol-Manchu wrestling), I figured I'd review the many variations as I've learned and used them in Chinese Boxing. With weapons, striking, throws and seizing, this was the civilian MMA for combat, but it does not replace a solid wrestling foundation. Thus personally I find Shuaijiao and northern pugilism such as Praying Mantis Boxing to be a great match.

Not many know this but Kung fu is like over 90% grappling. You wrestle, you throw, you clinch, you toss someone over your head like a rag doll and slam them onto the ground. And this guy gets it.

1:58 is a very common Tanglang Quan technique and most people in Yantai call it 腰斩. I knew it was a throw from the start but I didn't actually know how it was applied. Thanks for clearing that up.

You see these kinds of movements in taijiquan, too. Just a lot of the time (depending on the school, obviously), the students aren't taught the applications.

1:07 I personally recommend grabbing his right arm with your right hand in this technique, because the attacker can punch or elbow strike your back.

Chinese style clinch work is pretty different than what most think. It is more like judo or mongolian wrestling than Muay Thai or Western wrestling styles. Your search terms are San shou or Shaui jio

Find something you can do, don't give up because of injury. Work around injuries. Try chi-kung, and or, maybe Tai Chi Ch'uan. Hsing Yi Ch'uan or Da Cheng Ch'uan. Good luck.

Other than just tradition, any guesses why this throw features so much in northern Chinese martial arts? Like, I don’t have a ton of experience, but when I think of a throw that sets Chinese fist styles apart from other martial arts, it’s this class of throws. I feel similarly about shoubie in shuai jiao
@the.wandering.warrior
@the.wandering.warrior 2 жыл бұрын
Great observation! It's a throw with high percentage success rate if you fight/clinch/wrestle a certain way. It's also easy to do this without falling over, and can be easily strung into striking combinations. It also doesn't require a strong grip per say so even if they're slippery it'll work It's also very common in Mongolian wrestling. As for shoubie yes it is big in Shuaijiao and both in Shuai and Mongol Bokh, dehe/degee is common, the inside hooking of leg.

This looks a lot like the inner forearm block seen in ITF Taekwon-Do. It also looks like the palm pressing block ...also seen in ITF Taekwon-Do. So, this could be another application of both of those 'blocks'.
@the.wandering.warrior
@the.wandering.warrior 2 жыл бұрын
palm pressing block Very well could be, that looks to me like the Taijiquan "xiefei" (diagonal flying) viriation on this knock over knee throw. However remember TKD derived much from Japanese karate who took a lot from Ryukyu, the Ryukyu/okinawan karate was often used very differently and hence the katas don't always match TKD or Japanese karate well - some blocks are actually blocks.

@@the.wandering.warrior I hear you...but ...the variety of techniques...for example...a block In Po Eun done in an X stance....looks very much like an axe kick (Chinese axe kick) whilst grabbing and pulling the arm....it's not portrayed as being the same as another block...which also has a circular movement and also finishes in an X stance.. ...that 'block' looks like a pull to one arm whilst sweeping the leg .. followed by a punch to the kidneys or hammerfist to the side of the neck. Out of context..the actions look pretty similar...but they're depicted as being different techniques....if you didn't know how they worked you'd think that the actions were the same minus a few non essential frills. I think Gen Choi knew exactly what those actions represented. I think he knew they represented something other than he presented in his encyclopaedia. I mean the application of twin elbow strike in Po Eun is hitting two people..each on either side of you with an elbow...whilst looking in the direction of ONE elbow... Ignoring that elbow striking two people on either side is a ridiculous idea....why would you be looking in ONE specific direction.. the same direction as the leg that's being pulled ( a leg being pulled representing a sweep)? Anyone seeing that technique who knows mantis or white crane would recognise it immediately. It's a circular deflection and raising of one arm...a pulling of that arm whilst sweeping the leg and elbow striking with the elbow of the other arm...though....it can also be an armpit lock .. The point is that whether it's a lock or an elbow ...it's done to ONE person which is why we look in ONE direction in the form. I contend that Gen Choi did NOT fully disclose everything that went into his patterns. I'm saying that I believe that he in fact presented a neutered version of his Taekwon-Do to the world. I've no idea why he would do that...but...I think we have to look at the logic of the applications present in the official applications and see that in many cases that logic is ridiculous. BUT, if you use the ORIGINAL application of those techniques as seen in their equivalent in Chinese arts...those techniques start to make a LOT of sense. I don't believe the current ITF philosophy of Tkd . Which is , that TKD is exactly as presented in Gen Choi's encyclopedia and doesn't need to be reexamined....I very much believe it does need to be reexamined. This, of course, would not be a popular view in my home dojang...so I'll keep it to myself..but I believe I'm right.

Here, it's a demonstration. IRL, any one or combo of these reasons: a. Skill mismatch. b. Speed mismatch. c. There's supposed to be an entry move not as clearly shown. d. Sure, do it. You're hitting their head with poor structure (weak blow), whilst you're also gonna hit the ground with your head because he threw you. (In these arts, at its most raw there do seem to be a 'sure, he can try to claw at my leg whilst I throw him. I bleed a bit from my leg, he gets punched with the Earth, and then I'm kicking him whilst he's down too.')
