Best practice is to pull the plug. If turning power off at the breaker, don't forget to verify that power is off to the stove before doing any work.

I will replace 2 of the blocks. Not sure how hard it is to find the right one for my stove! I have a pic of it, will that and the name of the brand of stove be enough info to order the correct part??? Thanks again for everything! Barry
@Know-How-Now2 жыл бұрын
Hi Barry, thanks for subscribing. Welcome to Know How Now. Somewhere on the stove is a plate with the model number. There are many appliance part sites on the internet. Search by your brand & the model number. If possible, only buy an OEM part. It will cost more money, but some of the after market parts are crap. If you get one of the crappy ones, it might not fit or fail quickly, then you get to do the job again. Many suppliers are tricky and they act like you are getting OEM part, but you get something else.

Your stove is immaculate! You either never cook or are just super good at keeping it sparkly clean ;) We have a Kenmore that looks a lot like yours (not as clean looking - lol)...it has a range above the stove top in addition to the oven below. I don't know the age but it's OLD. I love it and they don't make 'em like they used to. Unfortunately, both ovens no longer work, and we only had two burners working, now just one...which led me to your video. I want to fix it all myself vs. buy a new stove - it's a great unit and worth keeping, if we can.

You're the best teacher! I have a GE old stove with 3 wires ( red, black, and yellow ) connecting to the 3 ends burner. Can I replace it with a 2 ends burner? and how? Thank you so much for sharing!
@Know-How-Now8 күн бұрын
I don't know of a way to do that. Find the model number on the stove. It's likely on a tag someplace. Open the oven door and check around there or on the back of it. When you have the model number, search the online sellers of appliance parts. If they say the burner is no longer available, try searching for the part number on eBay. You might find a new old stock burner there.

Get a "genuine GE" part. They say calrod in the center. Be careful, a lot of sellers will try to trick you and sell a knock off part. They are usually in a blue/white plastic bag. You'll probably pay around $35-40 for a new one. Get the model number off of your stove, look up the part number on one of the appliance parts websites. Check eBay, often that is the best price and they will show you a picture of what you are buying.

I don't do any endorsements, most of the appliance repair sites are similar. I just shop for the best price/shipping on the OEM part. Sometimes you can find the part on eBay at a reasonable price.

If you are comfortable with it, you can give it a try. Take your time. I feel that the instructions are detailed enough for someone who has common sense and can use tools decently. Make sure you buy genuine parts made by the stove's manufacturer, it's worth paying a little more for the correct part and better quality.

Great video thank you very much I just had a question... I watched another video where they replaced it like you did but they didn't have to cut the wire they went all the way through the back of the machine and took the back off is that a better option?? My question is cutting the wire like you did and mending it that's safe to do correct doesn't cut down on any of the voltage that's my only question thanks for the help!
@Know-How-Now2 жыл бұрын
Since I haven't see the video you are referring to, it's hard to say if the work done was appropriate/best practice. The wiring used on a stove has a special covering rated for use in the stove. I recommend finding the model number on your stove and finding a parts diagram on one of the web sites that sell appliance parts. When you see the part on the diagram and when ordering it you will have a better idea of what to expect. If it has leads like the one in the video, you'll want to splice it in place as shown in this video.

@Know-How-Now Жыл бұрын
I like Ideal's T-5T strippers. I'll put a link to it below. It would be good for a homeowner. Notice that there a two scales on it, one for AWG solid and on the other side for AWG stranded. When stripping a wire back, you'll want to look for the AWG size on the casing and match it to the appropriate stripping hole size. Klein tools also makes some nice strippers too. The casing on the wire for the stove receptacles can be hard to remove because it has been exposed to heat. Hi - I am replacing the receptacle on an ancient GE stove. On this stove, the stove's control wires plugged directly into the receptacle. However, damage to the ends of the control wires now require me to add a length of wire to attach to the receptacle, and then splice with the control wires, as in your video. Is there anything special about these wires and the connector I'll need to add, given their proximity to heat? Thank you.
@Know-How-Now3 жыл бұрын
You'll want to use the same gauge wire. The wire's covering has some sort of heat rating. Check the covering for some sort of label/writing. That will give the the gauge/cable type. If you have a local appliance repair shop, they may be willing to sell you the correct replacement cable.

great video,quick question,how would you clean the the ends of the heating element forks that plug into the block,i think that's my problem,sometimes the heating element doesn't like to turn itself down a bit while cooking,it's got a mind of its own.
@Know-How-Now5 жыл бұрын
The control switch (infinite switch) can stick and might cause the problem you are describing. A poor connection between the burner ends and the block would likely cause the element to not heat up or intermittent heat.
@fonzo25255 жыл бұрын
@@Know-How-Now thx for the quick reply,maybe i'll try spreading the burner forks out or in to make them fit more snugly in the block,this doesn't happen all the time but really is a problem when you need to reduce the heat and it doesn't work forcing you to take the pot/pan off the burner until it decides to work again,lol
@Know-How-Now5 жыл бұрын
If the connection is bad, you would likely get limited or no heat, a bad connection can't cause the burner to not reduce heat. Again, your problem is likely the infinite switch.

I recently had one of the burners on my electric stove “explode.“ It left a hole in the burner which obviously needs to be replaced. Upon trying to extract the burner from the receptacle block, I find that it is very very stuck. I am not sure if I should just give it a good pull and see if it frees it up, but believe me, it is stuck in there pretty good. Any advice would be helpful. Failing that, I may just need to replace all the burners and receptacle blocks.

If the burner hasn't been removed from the receptacle for a long time, you have to give it a good tug to remove it.

Tried to buy drip pans (via Amazon) with those clips but was lied to and ended up with drip pans without the clips. If the only way I can get those clips is to buy drip pans that have them, I will. f they are original equipment for your stove, then find the model number, it's on a tag. Go to one of the online parts sellers, find the parts diagram for your stove. So I replaced my receptacle connector like maybe 6 months ago and it shorted out and failed. I plan on replacing it again. Do you know why this might have happened? Is getting exact replacement parts that important? And I didn't use any heat shrink tubes. I don't believe it came with any. Is that very important to put on?
@Know-How-Now5 жыл бұрын
If possible, buy replacement parts from the manufacturer. They will be a correct fit and likely better quality than a "universal fit" or a cheap knock off. I tried a cheap knock off because I didn't want to spend more time searching for OEM parts. I had to replace the knock off one in under a year with an OEM part. I supplied my own shrink tubing, it's not something you must use, but it is "good practice". The electrical department in big box hardware stores will likely sell it. Make sure your the connections are not loose. Loose connections cause fires or arc detecting breakers to trip. I have a video that shows how to properly use wire nuts, it's 10 minutes well spent: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZnQlZKaqMqnqdU
