That's why I did this video. I'm trying to educate players on the proper way to play this rule to try and avoid the obligatory half hour argument that inevitably follows someone scrambling like this. At the very least I wanted to show where in the rulebook to look to end an argument quickly.

Good stuff! I feel like there are so many things the Sovjets could do from Leningrad and not only to scramble. Thank you for clearing things up for the scenario where transports have to retreat from a failed amphibious assault. So 1 transport goes down with cargo for every ‘overkill’ so to speak and they have to retreat from the direction they came from. Is that 1 zone of movement or could it also be 2 or even 3 if they started from a naval base?

One thing I could've mentioned in the video was that the Germans could have chosen to retreat at the end of the first round of combat for the sea zone which would have saved them the Cruiser and Transport and given them some defence of the transports on Russia's turn. The land combat would still have taken place after that for at least one round.

Hm, these rules must've changed between 1st and 2nd edition. Pretty sure that in 1940 1st ed, scrambling is part of the combat phase, and can only be done from an *island* with an air base.

What if the invasion force has an aircraft carrier with planes, do these fight the scrambled fighters along with the shipping? Does the invader have to say where his planes are going first (i.e. using against scramble or taking part in the land invasion)? If the attacker can use planes against the scramble (together with the shipping rolls) and wins, can the invader's planes then go on to fight in the land battle and the remaining shipping also go on to conduct naval bombardment?

GHG, ‘Twas a truly Great lesson you taught us at iron stitches War Room about scrambling being at the end of the combat movement phase thus preventing scramble Denial by attacking the airbase in the strategic bombing raid portion of the conduct combat phase. Also I think I remember reading something about the presence of an enemy sub in a sea zone Pre-venting the offload of troops & cargo and preventing an amphib assault unless the sub is dealt with first. Col Tef
@primroselane1
@primroselane1 7 жыл бұрын
If you are attacking with only transports then you can't ignore the sub. If you have some sort of escort, such as a Destroyer, then you can either attack the sub or ignore it and continue with the amphibious assault.

Scrambling is still unclear. So the 2 fighters and 1 tactical bomber scramble... do they attack at their “defense numbers”? Can they only roll once (like naval bombardment)? If it can attack more then 1 roll, then that is very unbalanced.
@primroselane1
@primroselane1 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the scrambling nation is on defence so you would use your defensive values. The defender can't retreat so they would have to stay in the fight and keep rolling until combat is resolved or the attacker retreats. It is not unbalanced you just have to plan for it on offence whether your opponent scrambles or not and learn how to take advantage when you are on defence.

What if the move is in non-combat? I had someone move a transport into a seazone adjacent to my airfield and send dudes onto a friendly-neutral territory, our guess was, since scrambling occurs first, that this was a legal move. Thoughts?
@primroselane1
@primroselane1 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn't see this comment. Scrambling happens at the end of combat move so no they wouldn't be able to scramble since those boats didn't reach the sz until non-combat move. It would be the same as a kamikaze strike, those aren't allowed on non-combat either.

ONE QUESTION: DOES AIRBASES CAN BLOCK ENEMY SHIPS MOVEMENT THROUGH ADJENT SEA ZONE BY SCRAMBLING (if there is a airplane unit)? I know it is sound weird, but scrambled sea zone is a HOSTILE sea zone. You can read it in A&A 1940 2nd edition Europe rulebook page 12/13 (combat phase): ". A sea zone into which defending air units may be scrambled in reaction to an amphibious assault (see “Scramble,” page 16) may be treated in the same way as a hostile sea zone for this purpose." WHATV DO YOU THINK? In my opinion, if it is a possible, it might completely change entire Pacific war strategy and give much more value for small island like Guam, Midway, Wake Island, Palau etc, and push players to fight for control of them (like it was in real Pacific War). What do you think guys? I am really curious about it, but I am not native speaker and this rulebook is not enought precise for me :(

During an amphibious assault, does a target country’s boat need to be present to scramble? e.g. Germany attacks Leningrad, and Russia has zero ships in the sea zone the assault takes place in, can they create a hostile sea zone by scrambling? It seems that scrambling can be used judiciously in that case. I think you can also make a move like, scrambling just one plane to eliminate Shore bombardment in some cases (kamikaze too)
@primroselane1

Yes you can scramble without boats in Global 40. You can really turn a game with a surprise scramble that the attacker wasn't expecting. That's why I make these know the rules videos.

Played a game of G40 recently, came across a scenario where a sub tried to hit lone transports in a sea zone with an airbase with defending fighters. Would the sub get that kill on the transports? Or could it not since if the defender scrambles, you have to resolve that combat before the sub can move on to the transports? Alternatively, can you even scramble fighters against an attacking sub in the first place?

Multiple comments: 1) I love the "well, I just made a sea battle" line. 2) I had someone try to argue that the scrambling planes were attacking with 2 fighters and a Tac Bomber get combined arms. I begrudgingly told them they we wrong. Lol 3) it takes planning, but you "can opener" an airbase by bombing it to be inoperable, before you amphibious assault/naval battle. 4) Speaking to myself as well, I think most people have to increase their situational awareness and learn to view coastal airbases as potentially 3 additional units in any sea battle before they combat move.

It doesn't cost much to repair your airbase before the following turn. As I showed in the video you can't bomb an airbase before the defender has an opportunity to scramble. They would have to do it after the combat phase begins so it wouldn't take effect until after Germany's turn was over and Russia's begins. Even if Germany did max damage to the base Russia could make it operable for only 4 IPC's. Germany would be better off sending their bombers into the battle instead.

What I meant but didn't say was Italy could bomb the Russian Airbase then Germany attacks before the Russians could repair it. Like a can opener.

Ah yes that would work. If you didn't have enough German planes to leave a couple in the SZ then it would be a good idea.

Clarification Request: Scrambling Fighters from Aircraft Carriers in Axis & Allies: Global 1940 Here is an example of what I am referring to. In the context of Axis & Allies: Global 1940, imagine the following scenario: Scenario: There is an aircraft carrier with two fighters stationed in Sea Zone 112 (SZ 112). The United Kingdom decides to launch an attack on German ships in Sea Zone 111 (SZ 111). Considering there is an airbase located in Western Germany (which is adjacent to SZ 112), can these fighters scramble to defend SZ 111? There is no explicit mention in the Global 1940 rulebook regarding whether fighters stationed on a carrier in an adjacent sea zone can scramble if there is an airbase nearby. The rulebook outlines that fighters (and tactical bombers) can scramble from a territory with an airbase to defend a sea zone being attacked, but it does not clearly address whether this applies to aircraft on carriers located in an adjacent sea zone. Thus, I am requesting clarification on whether fighters on a carrier in SZ 112, with an airbase in Western Germany adjacent to that sea zone, are permitted to scramble to defend SZ 111. Your insights or reference to any additional errata or FAQs would be appreciated.
@primroselane1

Carrier-based fighters do not scramble to adjacent zones regardless of whether or not they are adjacent to an airbase. Also, a sea zone adjacent to a territory is not considered part of that territory (you can't own a sea zone).

Can you retreat with ships that have already moved their full range? I'd imagine not, but say it's possible, if they're from different directions, can you kinda fudge it and move them beyond their range? Ex. two forces move to SZ 110 from 109, 111 and 113 (say for a moment without the naval base adjacent). They take a hit or two, retreat, and all have to move to the same spot...is 109 legal?
@primroselane1
@primroselane1 6 жыл бұрын
They all have to go back to a zone where one of them came from (the last zone they travelled through). They can retreat even if they have gone their full range.

So you can pull some sneaky stuff to give an extra move to some ships? Say Americans have a fleet coming in from Hawaii and a stray guy near the Philippines that both attack the Japanese....retreat after one round and move to where the Philippines guy came from no?

Good video GHG! Thanks a lot. I have one additional question: Q: Is it possible to protect a lonley transport by scrambling? Example: There is a lonley German transport in SZ112 (connected to Western Germany). Western Germany is host to 3 Axis fighters. The UK-Player launches one fighter because he wants to take the transport out. Is the German-Player allowed to scramble to protect his transport? I would say YES: UK fighter launches a sea battle vs the German transport. The Axis fighters join the sea battle by scrambling. Is this correct or do I missunderstand the rules? Best regards from Germany Duri7
@primroselane1

You are correct Duri. You can scramble your fighters or tactical bombers anytime the enemy attacks into a sea zone adjacent to a functional airbase. Attacking a defenceless transport is still considered combat.

I didn't think you could ignore a sub when doing an amphibious assault... Maybe that's 1942?
@primroselane1
@primroselane1 7 жыл бұрын
An unescorted transport can't ignore a sub when doing an amphibious assault. A transport escorted by a warship has the option of ignoring an enemy sub during an amphibious assault. Scrambling the planes turns the sz into a hostile sz so the sub can take part in the battle against the warship and transport. Those are 1940 rules.

ONLY DECISION about Scrambling has to be made before conduct combat phase. SCRAMBLING IS NOT A BATTLE, RIGHT? Scrumbled units can PARTICIPATE IN NAVAL OR LAND B A T T L E , HOWEVER THE BATTLE IS AFTER TACTICAL BOMBING! So, tactical bombing of airbase to knockout the scrambling units is possible. Defender has to decide, before the battle. That is why, the tactical bombing is before battle, because result of that has impact of scrambling units. In other way, there is no point to even to bombing airbases.
