Do writers get off on ruining characters? Is it that they're trying to leave some kind of legacy, or lasting change, on the character? Like what Frank Miller did to Daredevil, Quesada to Spider-Man, etc
@warrensloan346711 күн бұрын
I think Kraven’s Last Hunt is a very good example because it demonstrates the twofold nature of the actual problem. You have the editorial staff who allow them to resurrect the character completely undermining the story, and then you have the other writers who read the story and say “I can do that too!” who then write their own allegedly poignant story where they kill off a supporting character, lessening the impact because they go to the well too often.

I could list any number of direct to home release sequels that emphasize the point that sometimes stories have natural end points and don’t need to continue but for the sake of being topical I’m going just say Gladiator II and leave it at that.

I kind of can't picture Kraven's Last Hunt without the suicide. The whole point is that he beat Spider-Man and has nothing left to hunt anymore. I also hate the subsequent resurrection.

The worst plotlines in comics are the ones where you can feel them being stretched thin not because the topic requires time to be discussed, processed and developed but because they're a cash grab or the ones that are flip-floping between two different extremes for no reason and no character development to justify it.
@TrillinonКүн бұрын
There is space for ongoing series like Superman, but they should be rare. Given a long enough timeline, even Superman, Batman, or Spiderman will end. Perhaps they even should, to make room for new top-tier brands, and to force Marvel and DC to practice developing new IP.
@DIOBrando-ij2bp9 күн бұрын
Is that something comic book creators still think, that they can’t do big changes? Because it seems like once we got into the 2010s that comic book writers were basically given carte blanche to do whatever they wanted. Or at least they were allowed to make huge changes that for whatever reason don’t get undone.

Anyone suspect that Takahashi left Ranma open-ended so she could revive it in case her next project didn't succeed? Speaking of emotional moments Tthat "end"-- a lot of writers try to do that when their stint on a title concludes. The problem is a lot of creators don't know how long they will be doing a title so they can't really plan for that emotional ending. It would be great if someone knew he would get exactly 24 issues of "Batman" so he could actually plan to end his run with a moving conclusion. Of course, that writer would have to be really good....
@OnimenoJason11 күн бұрын
Takahashi had a few successes at the time Ranma ended. I doubt she did that for that reason. Urusei Yatsura had a similar type of ending as Ranma, which both are very similar because they are her style of romantic comedy.

TBH the never-ending nature of US comics is one of the main reasons I stopped reading Marvel and DC titles. The ending is one of the most important parts of any good story, so it's hard to stay invested when you know that ending will never come. As for comics that do have a definitive ending, knowing when to wrap things up can make or break a series. Dave Sim made the mistake of commiting to 300 issues of Cerebus when he only had enough good material for 200 issues, whereas Jeff Smith knew exactly when to end Bone and in doing so created an all-time classic.
@Bolbi14511 күн бұрын

@Bolbi145 I don't really pay attention to sales so I'm surprised to find out Invincible didn't sell well. I always assumed it must've been fairly successful sales-wise for it to get an animated series and a couple of action figure lines.

I read trades so by the very nature most have an ending of that chapter in the life of that character. Batman War 5 volumes. Batman Knightfall is several trades. The Boys is the biggest run I have read so far with a final end to it. I have read 2000 AD and the story wraps up from one to four volumes with those characters. Dredd goes on forever though. Read Secret Avengers and that story wrapped up in two volumes about a crown, but also added a to be continued with John Steele. I got a two chapters in the life of with a tease of what's to come.

0:56 If the manga is not popular, mangaka’s editors make choices. Come on you should know this, Perch. 15:14 It is really Sad the only Indie comics you shown and is Sweet Tooth and Kirkman comics. You know there other comics that Kirkman comics and Saga. Most Indie comics do have an ending. Characters from Indie comic do have consistent personalities. And you know there is one writer. Rick Remender has ending for most his comics. Deadly Class Black Science Paper Girls is a better example than Saga, because paper girls has an ending. Only Elseworld or different or non canon continuities gets an ending. Until they use for annoying multiverse stories. And again Jack Knight is the few comic characters that keeps an ending. Captain Marvel from Marvel comic died from Cancer. Death Metal gave Superboy Prime a Happy ending. 15:25 I remember Two Face commit an American Seppuku in new 52, but he is still alive in Batman All Star. Because Popular characters can’t stay dead and that annoying. Like Ben Percy and Victor LaValle’s Sabretooth Wars was supposed to be Sabretooth’s ending, but no Marvel decide to make a Sabretooth comic by Frank Tieri after Sabretooth died. Why? Same with Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. They either be killed off, retired, lost or have Amnesia, they will comeback because they let their successors take their place. Only Wally and Kyle Rayner took Barry and Hal’s places but sadly it doesn’t stay long. Barry had an emotional moment when he sacrificed himself. Hal had a tragic moment where he lost his city and become Phrallax but all those moments undo, because they are popular. Same goes for X Men. Only New Mutants and Generation x become official x men, while only few characters from Surge’s Generation and Hope Generation become breakout or stuck in Limbo. Perch, I want to ask you, who is cloud 9 and who is Son of Vulcan? Why don’t you talk about the Ending of MHA, Perch? I am mixed on Jujutsu Kaisen’s ending. Because there is one Sukuna Finger left out there. I know Yozakura Mission Family is ending soon. Possibly in 2025. Undead and Unluck is also ending.

I actually have quite a few manga where there’s an artist & a writer, not just a single mangaka, one of my favourite manga “Akame ga Kill” is like that. But even when there is 2 it makes absolutely no difference, they always work great together so makes no difference, always in the afterword of each volume both artist & writer always praise each other.

This is why I believe more comic book publishers should adapt popular book series. The reason why is because a beginning, middle, and ending are already promised from the get-go. Plus, if you're an author who dreams of one day adapting your work into a movie or television series, then perhaps adapting it into comics first would not only be a really good foot in the door for later adaptations, but even if those don't come to fruition, you still have a successful comic book series now attached to your name.

I wouldn't end popular characters storylines (especially if they're making bank). These comics are meant to be ongoing like a soap opera. Single creator stories though should probably end unless there's so much to the world that they can transition to an ongoing with new creative teams.

1:28 Big Changes? What about Tim Drake? No not his sexuality. I mean that fact he lost his dad, his girlfriend, two of his best friends and Bruce Wayne. After Battle of Cowl, Tim Drake goes by *Red Robin.* Only Tim’s Dad stays dead, while everyone came back to life. I doubt you care about Tim Drake. You still won’t do a Tim Drake Sales Analysis. How about Retrospective review on Red Robin Comic. Like how describe Tim Drake’s personally from 1st day he becomes Robin all the way to him being Red Robin before new 52. Let’s see how all these big changes affect him. I know The death of Alfred and Dick getting shot effect Damain making him quit his own Teen Titans and leaving the Bat-Family Even Geoff Johns tries to Expand Bart Allen’s personality in his Teen Titans run. Bart doesn’t want to be known as impulsive forever, he wants to grown up. That why after getting shot in the knee cap he start to read books, to expands his knowledge. But during Infinite Crisis Geoff Johns decide to aged up Bart Allen into an adult so he can become The Flash. And later Bart Allen was killed because people didn’t like Bart being the Flash. You know perch, Bart Allen’s era of Being the Flash is 20 years ago by 2026. How about you do retrospective on that comic. Let see if it is bad or it was bad timing. Compare and contrast Adult Bart Allen and Teen Jon Kent. 12:52 Tim Drake has not Moved on being Robin. He still goes by being Robin, even though he in his 20s by now. Most Tim Drake’s generation has not move on or grow. Tim Drake’s Generation are stuck in limbo. The only saving Grace is Kenny Porter gave Connor Kent a great comic series, SuperBoy: Man of Tomorrow. Being stuck in Limbo and being forgotten either get use to only be a supporting character or get killed off like Surge is worst than not having an ending. For god’s Surge’s Generation of New X Men is big example. Surge is dead. Prodigy, Anole and Hellion in that s*!tty NYX comic, Wind Dancer is in Dazzler. Elixir, Mercury and everyone else’s whereabout are unknown. X-23 doesn’t count she already popular since the day she appeared in X Men Evolution. 9:35 I am the only one is speculating what is happening in Ultimate X Men. I made theories and speculation what Happened next. Issue 10 is tomorrow. And I saw Peach Momoko’s interview with Comic Tropes. It was interesting. 10:22 *James Robinson’s Starman, you fool.* He is literally the only Comic Character that Keep an ending. And it should stay that way. Hell we even see him of last issue of Geoff Johns’ JSA. Jack along with his son was there at Courtney/Stargirl’s high school. No superhero stuff, Just Jack being a Father to his son, both are there to see Stargirl graduates. And I remember someone(the emailer) told me Jack Knight should comeback as Starman. I say *“that is a terrible idea”. It will cause the same problem as bringing back Barry Allen from the dead. Jack Knight should keep his ending. 10:45 Because it too hard to create original individual villains. It same thing with Supeheroes having families. Green Lantern is not family, you fool. That like saying all Cops are blood related. How about you talk about some alien lanterns. 14:15 You don’t see Male Bisexual with a woman. Expect my boy Miguel Montez. There is solid proof. Dial h for Hero issue 10. 14:05 There is Bunker. Why don’t you talk him? He already established to be before DC retcon Tim Drake.

This is why I think DC and Marvel should have more 'micro universes' akin to the Ultimate and Absolute ones. Have a creator, or group of creators, to tell a specific story with a specific subset of Marvel or DC I.P. Plan a beginning, a middle, and an end. Then, end it after 12, or, or 60, or 100 issues.
