Do you find that your hair is growing better, fuller, or faster since you stopped dying it? I'm considering going jet black for a while and give myself a break from the bleach, and I was curious since we've had some similar hair colors.

I agree with much of what you said about porosity. I just disagree with your observation of what the hair’s like under water. I have low porosity hair (I’m 100% sure) but when my hair’s under the water and completely drenched, it’s flat. I think it has more so to do with texture and pattern (my hair’s fine and s-type) rather than porosity. I’ve noticed that coarser hair tends to keep its volume a lot more than fine hair when under water.

It’s sooo important to know your hair porosity, hair density, and the level of thickness it is. There’s a black woman on here who gets down the science of black hair. She has sooo many informative videos on a number of different things about black hair & growth. I highly recommend anyone to watch her if you’re starting out natural, big chopping, or even transitioning. Her channel is GreenBeauty. Videos like yours & hers are very much needed. My hair is medium porosity! The usage of "normal" might insinuate that there's a state that one should aspire to. It also goes into the myth that high porosity equals damaged hair. I don't agree with the cup method either because of the reasons you stated as well. Gang gang 🤟. "I welcome growth"

I welcome growth! I have normal porosity but I used to have high porosity about 7 months ago! I managed to get normal porosity somehow by consistently moisturizing my hair the key was to section my hair and spray warm water on my hair but also squeezing the water into my hair (kinda forces the water to stay in my hair!!) I would ensure my hair was wet and my curls were hydrated then I would put products in my hair. Side note: I also used hot oil treatments on my hair every 3-4 days. Anyways, I used a leave in conditioner by twisted sista and eden define curl cream and shea butter as a sealant on my ends. I twist my hair after this process and my hair usually dries after 5 hrs and I just wear my hair out or leave it twists and do a style. So far this method has my ultra moisturized and I love it. :)

I have high porosity hair because like a dummy I did a triple bleach process on virgin hair 😤 it was low porosity prior. Bri, I feel like what happened to you happened to me as well! 😩 Since my big chop, my hair has always been dyed, so my hair has been high porosity the whole time since being natural the past 4.5 years. Since 2018 I've been letting the color grow out and my hair has been so different! She doesn't absorb products as quickly and I have to put more effort into rubbing in products and some just sit on top of my hair and flake. I seriously think my natural virgin hair is low porosity and I have no idea how to treat her and I've been having sooooo much breakage! It's honestly just been overwhelming with all the short pieces and knowing how long my hair could have been if it wasn't for all these setbacks! So many times I've thought about just cutting it all off again but I've come such a long way and even though she's changed up on me, my hair has been a trooper...

@GISELLEMARIED4 жыл бұрын
The range of porosity is between normal/natural (which can be low-high) or damaged (also can be low-high). A person can have a low porosity naturally because of how the sebum from their scalp takes a long time to travel down their hair shaft. So what's important to know is what is your natural porosity and how to maintain that. A person can go from natural medium to damaged low porosity because they've clogged their hair cuticle up with oils that won't allow water to get in an moisturize the cuticle/cortex. Another example is going from natural medium to damaged high because of chemical alteration like bleaching/color. This was a good video but porosity has 2 ranges depending on what exactly you've been doing with your hair.
@SmartistaBeauty4 жыл бұрын
That’s so interesting I never knew damaged hair could fall into low porosity. All of the academic micro analysis research noted high friction being the main component of damage (chemical friction, manipulation, high heat, etc) causing hair to become porous. Where can I see more about this? 🙏🏽
@GISELLEMARIED4 жыл бұрын
@@SmartistaBeauty Well I learned this information from a stylist I know and she has a youtube channel "Stephanie and Dennis Mero" or search "the curl ninja". Damage comes in different forms but it might be easier to think of it as everything your hair isn't normally on it's own. And ingredients in products can damage your hair, I think most of us can agree on that. I also follow these stytlists on IG @iamblackgirlcurls who get naturals off the path of using oils and butters because those products contain things that block water from getting in and causing low porosity hair. Like I said the information you shared was great but there's just a little more too it from what I've seen and learned from the stylists I follow and interact with.

I welcome growth and thank you so much for this video! I now have mostly normal porosity hair, because I make sure to moisturize my hair on a consistent and regular basis. When I was done with the quiz, I was suprised to see that my hair is now mostly normal in porosity (With 8 answers in the orange column and 3 answers in the high porosity column), because due to neglect and not knowing how to take care of my hair, my hair was high in porosity for a long time. I guess due to me being more consistent with moisturizing, deep conditioning and doing protein treatments when needed (I did do ACV rinses, but I didn't notice a significant difference in my hair's ability to hold on to moisture better), I managed to lower my porosity. I noticed that, although having hair that's normal in porosity, there's little information out there how to identify and care for normal porosity hair, which is a bit annoying, imo. Great video!

Same I'm so confused and don't know what to do. I used to straighten my hair for 5 years or so, every day, without any heat protection. I have transitioned 4 years now. I remember that when I was a teen, before putting heat damage on my hair, it fell into the low porosity category. I guess my hair is still kinda high porosity from the damage I had done and now it's getting healthier and tries to go back to being low porosity and that makes it have both of them at once?

Also a little goes a long way. I've found cutting back on applying excessive amounts of product on my hair, I'm getting better results and less build-up and irritation. Both were less than $6.00 at Wal-Mart. Originally I got the leave-in at Sally's. Thanks and hope this helps somebody. 🙂
