As an Indonesian, I really appreciate your efforts to explore various traditional buildings in Indonesia. Each ethnic group in Indonesia (numbering around 1340 ethnic groups) has at least one or more unique traditional houses. As a reference, I suggest you study the Tongkonan house from Tana Toraja, Honai (Papua) or Ruma Krong Bade (Aceh) tribes. I myself come from Jakarta Capital Region, which has "kebaya" house, maybe not as majestic as other traditional houses but quite has its own characteristics. Here is a tips for you, if you need a quick reference just type in google "Rumah adat Indonesia", generally you will find a pictures with 34 traditional Indonesian houses (representing 34 provinces, although each province usually has more than two traditional houses). I'm very enthusiastic with your next project guys! Btw, when do you plan to collaborate with Keralis? I'm really waiting for that
@Silvarret5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, it's extremely useful! I was vaguely aware of different local traditional houses, but had no such clear overview. Now that I checked it, I remember - the building in this episode specifically is based on Minangkabau architecture of Sumatra. As for Keralis - he's free to join whenever he wants :)
@ardygifery40675 жыл бұрын
Glad to help you guys. I already realize that you are using Sumatran architecture because the flaminggo pavilion has a resemblance from the Great Mosque of Minangkabau (West Sumatra). Oh yes I see you are interested in Dutch colonial architecture in Indonesia, my suggestion for you is to study Lawang Sewu in Semarang which was once a kantoor (yes, we also use this term) Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij. Another fact, all presidential palaces (Istana) in Indonesia (Negara, Merdeka, Tampak Siring and Gedung Agung) are Dutch heritage building. I myself most like the Istana Cipanas which has its own uniqueness compared to the other four, unfortunately this palace is quite underrated. If you want to see a mixture of Dutch and Indonesian architecture, look at the Keraton (another term for the palace, we have many terms for palace that are impossible to explain one by one wkwk) Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat or Keraton Surakarta.

Haiiii, That right it's a Mosque. But the idea from this building is traditional house from West Sumatra, and it's called "Rumah Gadang". And I likes the way put there so its became the spotlight of this area. If you wanna another idea for the building or the name for the building you can search on google for traditional houses and historical places. Examples like "Gedung Sate" from Bandung. Incredible work. Koali Zoo is truly taking shape! This is one of favourite series on youtube at the moment. I love the “main street” it would be really cool if you could hide some shops/facilities inside the buildings so the guests go inside!
@NicholasLionRider5 жыл бұрын
I feel like this build could very easily slip into it just being a city or theme park with animals being the afterthought without it being a zoo at its core. The architecture is beautiful but zoo "central boulevards" rarely have the same layouts as theme parks. While a "main street" full of shops and buildings is standard in a Disney park or Six flags, in zoos the central strip is usually leading to some kinda central animal enclosure with giftshops and concessions spread pretty far apart. Zoos are more designed in a exhibit "circuit" with plazas by large animals for all the concessions. At the end of the day people are going for the animals and so while a nice riverside boardwalk area is nice, not many people would want to stop and eat at one of the first exhibits (the flamingos). Sightlines and weenies are still great additions, but things like themed animal trails and a logical path are more important for making a well organized zoo.

As someone who is currently studying architecture in school I have always loved how you try and incorporate many different styles and it is very collaborative. This is, to me, what can make a building last the test of time. I also love that you talk about the importance of the buildings and the styles because not many people think about those types of things when they just look at colonial types of buildings.
@martijnclaessens26564 жыл бұрын
I actually quit like to hear more about the history and background of the inspiration of your buildings, it gives the zoo and the work you're putting into it much more depth. For the rest, nice work as always. So happy with this collab!
@tomlowe31555 жыл бұрын
I can't remember where I heard this, so don't quote me, but I vaguely remember reading that zoos tend to statistically have less litter over-all than other spaces heavily accessed by the public. I would assume it's because of the presence of animals, which I guess might make the general public 'care' more. Or it could be to do with the presence of more bins in zoos for that same reason.
@willdenoble18985 жыл бұрын
TL96Kiwiguy I agree, but I also think that it’s because zoos generally contain less restaurants, food/drink, shops, etc, so there’s less material available to be thrown away.
@tomlowe31555 жыл бұрын
@@willdenoble1898 That could certainly be the reason, indeed.
@teineeva78685 жыл бұрын
@@willdenoble1898 Where I live, most restaurants in zoos actually don't have any takeaway food, they're places you get a table and enjoy a meal before continueing with your visit. They also tend to have some degree of classic restaurant service instead of just being self-service buffet-like places. As a result they produce a lot less waste on the customer's end. When they do have either somewhat take-away-like food or a self-service system, they're quite often also either inside or somewhat separated from the rest of the park (by something as simple as fencing around the terrace, for example) which when you combine it with a strategically placed bin makes people think twice about leaving with extra amounts of potential litter. It's something I want to start emulating in my zoos.

Possibly because of variable framerate. Parts of the video are actually playing slower or faster then the audio, which itself isn't recorded frame by frame. If you play the video back during your conversation, you could rerecording it in sync with the audio. A bit impractical though, and as mentioned: Only Mike could ever tell the difference.

The cover was always over the main street in Tokyo, or the 'World Bazaar' as it's known. I've heard people say it's covered due to the weather, but Imagineer Tony Baxter said it was to make it feel more like a shopping centre and to have an emphasis on shopping as apparently in Japan, it's a part of their culture to buy a lot of gifts for their families when they are away.

Wow great episode! The exhibition building reminds me of both traditional Asian and colonial ships. The roof looks inspired by both a 'junk' (jonk) and an 'East Indiaman' (retourspiegelschip) with their raised bows and sterns. The color of the rooftiles is similar to the brownish sails you see in many ships in Asia. Finally the ridge, carrying the roof and spires, looks like a 1:1 copy of a traditional structural keel. In lots of colonial settlements materials from ships were repurposed for the first buildings. Are these references from naval heritage intentional or merely a coincidence?
