Seoi-nage lifts uke before dropping him over the shoulder. Seoi-otoshi brings uke immediately down. Knee Seoi-Nage is a Seoi-otoshi since no lift.

I remember practicing that years ago. It was taught as if you got stuck coming in too high, or your opponent straightened his back to stop you. Then you’d drop your body. 👍 brings back memories.

The Japanese guy with the red belt is doing it WRONG. It obviously works but it is very different from making the opponent to step forward with his right foot and then, raising the opponent's right arm with your right arm while you you lower your height making the opponent trip over you. Zero physical effort required. Works for all heights and weights.

@@nishiryujiujitsu I play a lot of S-mount in BJJ. It's one of my preferred submission positions. IMO, you really need to pull that outside leg in tight, and wedge uke between both legs. Now I want to play with this wide open version and see if it can be maintained!

Speaking of forgotten techniques, maybe you have some information on this, Chadi. When I took Judo in college about 15 years ago, one of the things they mentioned to us was that there were parts of the curriculum that had been cut by Jigoro Kano when he was asked to teach the Japanese officers in the army. The idea that we were told was that these techniques were for the most part harder techniques (possibly involving some striking and atemi), and thus were deemed by Kano to be less safe to perform and train. He also did not trust that the officers would use them responsibly, so he omitted them from the curriculum, and they were eventually lost/forgotten, and very little is known about them. Do you know if this is true at all, and if so, if there are any indications as to what these techniques might have been? My professor was adamant that they were lost and there was no way to find out what they used to be, but I'm wondering if anything might have surfaced in the last few years about this matter.

@@chewiechewbacca142 that's not really what I was talking about, though, by the way the instructor made it sound. He was a high level black belt (I wanna say around 4th or 5th dan?), and he would have known about those techniques you mentioned and not spoken about them as "techniques removed from the curriculum and then lost" if they were still present in the kata, would he? I could see some of these still present in Japanese Jujutsu, but still, it doesn't quite sound like the same thing.
@Keepitsimple0912 Жыл бұрын
@@javgoro research into japanese jiu jitsu as judo is simply derived from japanese jiu jitsu, hence all those techniques are probably part of JJJ.
@dianecenteno5275 Жыл бұрын
You are correct! Many of the removed techniques can still be found in Jujutsu. Gansaki Nage is an example. In Jujutsu, its applied with the arm locked at the elbow making it difficult for uke to break fall. But if you change it to an underhook, it is now safer for Judo / wrestling. Tai Otoshi is executed against the knee with a lift in Jujutsu. Not so in Judo. Hope this helps. 🙏

That knee on belly submission has a bjj version that I’m rather fond of. Difference is that it’s more sidewise and you underhook the head and legs instead but crushing the solar plexus as the mechanism is the same
Very good educational documentary. Excellent teachers are remembered long after champions are forgotten.

To train at the Kodokan what is the difference between the foreigners classes and space vs the regular classes and spaces? Is it easy for foreigners to become members and what does being a member gain you cs being a guest? Several of us are planning on going to visit the Kodokan with 6th Dan Christine Pennick in a few yrs and the website is quite vague on many things. Any insight as a foreigner training in the Kodokan that you can share will be helpful thank you.

Hi Chadi, Im fairly sure Uki-Gatame was pioneered by Neil Eckersley in the 1980s, he was on the same Olympic Team as Neil Adams, he is also credited for it in Neil Adams Juji-Gatame series, even the Japanese called it Eckersley Gatame for a while. kzbin.info/www/bejne/al6vkGSZi8Zomac
