Wow your vlog has the most amazing scenery I have seen.i was staying in Phuket in 2004 my Thai lady organised a group trip over to Phi Phi, but you had to go to a specific restaurant for lunch food was average. Didn’t get to spend much time there as the ferry was due back. I said to my lady let’s return and spend Xmas there she said no, better head back to Australia? Then 4 days later 26/12 Tsunami hits. We were very lucky. When we ever get the ok to travel I will head there for a better look about. Thanks again for a great vlog

I was on Ko Phi Phi in the 80’s...it was very beautiful back then. No hotels, only cheap bungalows, only one simple restaurant....there were no buildings, no cement. No hoards of turists, only backpackers from the UK and Australia. I spent unforgettable days on such a gem. I went back in 2010 and cried seeing how they managed to damage and ruin such a beautiful island. So sad.

@Barbara Ferri Unfortunately, over the past 30 or so years, many places around the globe have become 'discovered' thus over-run & over-developed. I recall Akumal and Playa Del Carmen (in Mexico) as absolutely idyllic. Now they're hardly recognisable. I first visited lovely Hua Hin 20 years ago, it has also really changed. Stayed at Charlie's Huts in Koh Samui, right on the beach and it was a much different Samui then. As we look back and wish places remained the same (as when 'we' discovered them;) ironically they've changed 'because' of you, me and many, many others who also came to these places. Govt's play a role too of course. They generally do whatever they can to bring in ever more visitors, thus more jobs, revenue and ultimately over-development & environmental issues come with it. But prior to the current situation, many places around the globe from Machu Picchu, to Venice & even to the fjords of Norway were all implementing visitor limits. Bhutan is an ultimate example, with extremely limited numbers allowed in (but also comes with a price - min $250-$300 per person per day). Now there's signs Thailand may be looking to curb visits to some over-run places, such as at some National Parks (they just announced yesterday many parks will be closed for several months each year to rehabilitate). Also Maya Bay closure was extended even before the current global event. Was at Sam Roi Yot a few weeks ago and there's a limit of 500 visitors per day on the climb to the cave. Other parks have also introduced daily visitor caps. In Phi-Phi's case, perhaps in the future they could cap or eliminate day-trips, as the throngs of groups beaching in an armada of boats daily absolutely overwhelms the island. However, curbing or eliminating this would also greatly affect jobs and livelihoods.... All these issues will be up for debate in the future. But for now, just getting back to some sense of 'normal' travel is hopefully in the not too distant future...

Dear Babara Ferri, That's a nice experience to memorise. Nowadays, we won't see such a nice thing like that ,it's just only in a memory. Before they destroy lot of things at Koh PhiPhi , it was always a warm welcome from group of fish showed up their fin like a shark nearby the boat, some of them raced with the boat as well. I haven't seen that for ages and I miss them so much.

Barbara Ferri. I totaly agree with you! I was there first time in 1989. Came back every year untill after Tsunami. Gave up more or less arround 2002 after working as a Divemaster and saw the development going to destroy all that was the meaning of going there in first place. I went back few years after Tsunami and that was it! No More Phi Phi for me! Concrete and hordes of tourists. It's a SHAME that Thai government allowed this to happend to Phi Phi!!! I hope it will never recover from Covid19 so at least the marine life can come back. The Island...It's already lost forever!

Thai smile is a genuine smile of the most beloved people/country of our planet. No evil/organized global evil has a chance to wipe off even 0.1% of that smile. Thank you for your wish, hope is strong, and may i expand it to those that STILL did not manage to have time there.. Best luck to you, and to everyone everywhere..

Your right about Charlie's Huts. Brings back memories mate. Phi Phi looks great now. I've seen it 3 months after the tsunami not one palm tree Standing between the beaches Only some concrete pillars Only make do tin huts and shops. Went there on a day trip about 3 years ago and couldn't believe how many Chinese tourists were on the beach and in the restaurants. Your so lucky to have the place pretty much to yourself. Laughing. Feel sad for some of the business 😔

This was a day trip from Krabi with a couple of my friends and the only foreigners there besides us were a few others helping to clean up.

Thanks for making and sharing this video. A bit heartbreaking to see how punishingly quiet it is. Phi Phi has been our holiday destination of choice for a good few years now. It has a reputation as a party place, and sure you can find places to keep going into the wee hours. But there are also tranquil spots, away from the busier areas, where you can just soak up the absolute beauty of the place. Great diving and snorkeling available there, wonderful food, the loveliest people. It really is a stunning part of the world, worth going for a longer break. I wish everyone there well, hang in there. We'll be back.

@Michael Morgan Selfishly, I usually absolutely love an empty beach. However, in these times wish there were more footprints in the sand. Regards to the young drunkards, if I were in my 20's or a newly emerged Chinese middle classer, would make a bee-line to places like Phi Phi, can't blame 'em really. Note in my prev vid, the private villas company owner said 80% of their biz came from Chinese guests previously and these are min 20,000 baht a night digs too. He also noted no issues, in fact good guests he said. Having said that, for sure it'll take a while for new travellers especially in groups/flag followers to get to grips with intnl norms. I too really feel for the locals, very tough times indeed. Hopefully not to last too much longer. Thanks for watching & commenting Michael. Cheers

It looks quite nice now without all the tourists. I was there in 1997 it was very beautiful and quiet. But I have read many reports in the last few years about the negative effects of mass tourism and overdevelopment on this small island.
@SideTripLife
@SideTripLife 4 жыл бұрын
@Ski Cham For sure Phi Phi has been feeling the weight of mass tourism in recent years. Thankfully they closed Maya Bay & others to recover (and remain closed to do so, tourists or no). There's also building restrictions etc nowadays on Phi Phi but more needs doing. Not now of course but after this (and there will be an 'after this') Thailand needs to limit #s per day to access overcrowded places like Phi Phi. Perhaps limit day tours #s as the boats swamp the beaches offloading throngs of day trippers in normal times. However, that may mean you must have a hotel booked to get on the island. & this may drive up prices... Also many local small biz would be affected by limiting visitors. It's a tough decision all round. Globally, many places were previously limiting visitors. Bhutan is a long time advocate of limiting tourist #s (but comes with a min $250+ day price tag). Pristine Lord Howe Island Australia seeks to remain that way, limited to 400 visitors daily. From Venice Italy, to Machu Picch Peru, The Seychelles, many popular European & Adriatic hotspots and even The Forbidden City in Beijing (ironically;) many places are or were also looking to limit tourist #s. Some Thailand parks are already limiting daily passes & visitors. Recently I visited Sam Roi Yot in Prachuap Khiri Khan Thailand and they had a daily limit of 500 park passes daily - shameless plug, pls see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y2Oni5x5baaSbJo Going forward, expect more places locally & globally to take up measures to reduce 'over-tourism'. Meanwhile, hopefully we can just get back some sense of normal travel and sooner than later.

Hey thanks for the nice video. I felt sadness and a bit of anger and confusion seeing the quiet situation. I'm not sure what I'd be more comfortable with. Visiting in the current situation or visiting when bars are partying. Both would make me uncomfortable but hiking to those views, now that's worth doing in quiet times. I swear I had a dream a couple of weeks ago about going up a very similar mountain hike. All these cats in the video gave me a bit of delight. This is my first time seeing one of your videos. I'm not sure why it was recommended by KZbin. Possibly because I've been searching Thai travel.

Awesome video, was in Ao Nang last weekend for the 4 day holiday. Was great to see it busy. Tourist free Thailand is a once in a lifetime experience now. Was in Chiang mai 3 weeks ago and was fantastic to be able to get around without the hoards of Chinese. For sure the tourist places are hurting massive now, the reset button has been pressed and it will be great when people can return. I live in Lamai, koh Samui, things are awful here but Chaweng is even worse, gonna take a long time to get back to anything like it was . Your videos are brilliant, love em , be even better when you speak more ! Can concentrate more on the video, not needing to read too much . Great your getting about and doing your bit to help out . Well done and thanks again .

@braders bradford Great to hear Ao Nang was busier on the long weekend, Actually, did return on the weekend for a final night and it was also a bit busier (may post that 'missing night' vid after this series). Regards to Chinese travellers, actually they make up 25% of total tourist #s and on Phi Phi I reckon 50% are young westerners. Regardless, both groups are missed at this time. Voice, hate mine actually but may try to add more here n there (cringes;) Meanwhile, thx to you & ALL for patience reading and pls just skip over & pause at anything of interest. Also great you're pitching in helping out by visiting around too. Every bit helps :) Better days ahead hopefully sooner than later. Cheers

@Robbo Gsy Thanks RG! Ferry took about an hour and a half. Speedboat is faster but I liked the slow boat just fine. Cheers

Good vlog, like all the details of getting there and the places you stay. Have you ever been to Ko Samui?

@Roy Goad Hi Roy, been fortunate to have visited Samui a few times over the years. 1st time as a young guy 20 years ago, stayed at Charlie's huts right on the beach, fond memories! You do some travelling too I see, Thailand , Phils, Tibet, S America, fantastic! Cheers

I know you can take a speed boat from some places but plan on wearing swim attire and bring a disposable cheap poncho ( can buy at any Seven Eleven).

Watching this video now and remembering me in Phi Phi this January (2020) it's so sad. Maybe it is nice to see the island empty and the nature free but that's not true. In a moment everything has changed.

@Licantropo 74 It will take a longer moment but Phi Phi will bounce back. Just hope sooner than later.
