OMG!!! Thank you so much. Been fighting with a Kohler 23 since last night. Replacing the carb. I didn't pay enough attention when I took the throttle rod off to know how the spring assembly was suppose to function on the governor assembly. You just saved the day for me. Thanks once again.

You do not have to disconnect the throttle rod, just loosen the governor adjust bolt, hold throttle all the way open, move governor rod all the way clockwise, tighten back down. You may not have to remove the governor spring.

The key on mine was setting the shaft the governor arm clamps to first. After that everything fell right into place. Before that, nothing I did fixed the over revving problem I was having.

Is there a way to know that this needs adjusted? What i mean by that is i have a kohler 7000 series thats 4years old (zero turn mower) for residential use. Idle hunts as well as high rpm,,,fuel filter has been changed, carb cleaned (looked great initially also). Im left thinking its the governor. Thought maybe the pump but not sure if you can check for volume output. Thanks for this video also.
@robertruggles55847 ай бұрын
One closing comment you made was concerning the governor holding the throttle at idle. So, if you move the dashboard throttle handle all the way down, this releases spring pressure and the governor pulls the throttle all the way to idle. At this point, is there supposed to be any tension on the spring at all? I have a Kohler Command CV16s and at idle there's no tension on the spring. It's just floppy and sloppy in the slot which that end of the spring attaches to. But still, the governor isn't taking the RPM all the way down to idle target of 1700. I'd like to know how the governor is supposed to "hold it at idle" in this situation. What can I do?
@johncates70387 ай бұрын
There is a little spring above that long larger spring. You take a pair of needle nose pliers and bend that tab to the left to take some tension off it. It's a pretty crude way of adjustment but it works!

Hello sir where are the next videos to series for the next arms after the governor like then cables that hook to the throttle cable
@autorepairandmore3842 Жыл бұрын
I think my main linkage rod that goes up to throttle cable is actually backwards at bottom facing away from engine vs how this engine on video is bottom of rod where spring goes on throttle rod facing engine the correct way. I'm going to see if I can spin it the correct direction

Ever had an issue with the governor shaft leaking oil? Is there a seal that can be replaced on the shaft?
@ZippoVarga2 жыл бұрын
Hey BC. Yes, they can weep oil as the engine ages. The correct fix is to install a new governor shaft and have a bushing fitted in the wallered out hole to minimize oil seepage. Zip~

Getting ready to do a sump gasket and bottom crank seal on one of these in a 27hp, looks like it be done without touching the governor assembly, by pulling the bottom pan after turning motor over to work on it, what do you think?
@jeffvaughn98088 ай бұрын
I've gotta get your opinion Abt why my Kohler Courage 26 HP after cleaning fuel system and replaced all fuel line and filter cleaned carb did an ignition upgrade and I half spark on both cyl. I also set govern as per you video. Why is it still surging
@monstercoinz94603 жыл бұрын
So moving the throttle to fast/slow doesn't actually open the throttle valve when the motor is off? The governor automatically does that?
@ZippoVarga3 жыл бұрын
The Governor regulates the power. When you increase the engine RPM's it's done through the governor. When you pull the throttle cable to speed up the engine, it's actually pulling the governor linkage, not the carburetor directly. Zip~

After 20 minutes of operation (motor cultivator) the engine (Kohler CH395) starts to give and reduce gas and then shuts down. After that it will not light up for 5-10 minutes. Most likely until the engine cools down and then starts again and runs for a while until it shuts down again. What is happening?

I noticed when you was holding the carburetor open its opposite of what mine is I have to pull forward to have it open and pull back to have it closed you're saying that the opposite way and I'm not understanding that unless in the carburetor has a pin pull throttle from the top instead of the bottom.

I reset my governor as you said but I still get surging when I increase the speed. Once I lower the speed it levels back out to normal. Should I adjust the governor spring to different holes?

It shouldn't surge if that's what you're asking. Often that's a carb setting issue though. Zip~

In video you are in front of, behind, or on top of engine ? Your set up does not look like mine. My motor was installed new in 1985 or 86. I am sure some improvements have been made.since 1985. Some "Ahole" mechanic said he adjusted the governor, ran 10 minutes after l got home, blow up hole the size of half dollar in block. My son ran it out of gas a few days ago. I took carb. off, and blew it out. Now I think the governor is out of adjustment, I think l can reset the governor after watching your video. Thanks

Im trying to set mine. And the book said clockwise. Those butt heads. ANYWAY why did you unhook your throttle linkage from that arm. The trottle is wide open anyway. Or did you need that arm to actuly move up further than what it would with it hooked up?

Great video. I have a question. Now when my kohler is running it will rev very high. And i put a spring an the opposite side of the governor spring to keep i at idle. But as soon as i move the throttle a little bit and the throttle butterfly opens slightly it starts to rev high again. What would suspect the problem is? Thankyou
@billmalec2 жыл бұрын
The shaft the governor arm clamps to has to be set all the way clockwise or counterclockwise first. Try one way first and see what happens. If that doesn't work turn it the other way. I swear mine went all the way counterclockwise but I could be wrong. I thought my problem was the spring location also and it wasn't. It's that rod.
Nice video but the adj should be done with the clip in the hole
