I love keeping an old machine like that around that way when the young guys start complaining the keys to the new equipment go missing and they can find out first hand how the old timers did it

And a lot of the not-so-old timers are still using this vintage of equipment. Simple, tough as nails, reliable, can be fixed in the field if necessary by just about any decent mechanic and in the smallest of towns. I work in remote sites a lot, none of my stuff is any newer than early '00s. Not the latest/greateset, but I run day after day while my buddies are constantly down with this or that electronic component or sensor malfunctioning. At the end of the year, margin and uptime is what counts, not how pretty the thing looks with a service truck sitting beside it. That said, I do enjoy the time here and there I go help someone and get to run a new piece of equipment - no denying the ergonomics and finesse of the cab/controls is deluxe.

i completely get you on the insurance. Insurers are becoming harder and harder to work with, a lot of smaller companys are going under due to both the lack of drivers and insurers unwilling to insure newer drivers. Hell i had to return one of my leased units due to the insurance company jacking me around since last november for me to even get put on the policy, come this past feburary i said fuck it and went with facility only to end up with all my clients shuting down for that particular freight due to cronoa, ended up returning the lease and more so the day i was returning the lease the insurance company finaly reneged, after giving excuse after excuse "You don't have enough US Experience" despite the current driver i had on the truck having none either or "Your more likely to hit a bridge in the US" Yeah ok buddy there are bridges here too and with snow and ice i'd say its more likely in canada with a novice driver im not one for government regs or intervention but i feel if this keeps up feds might need to look at reigning them in. industry can only carry on like this for so long, hell my friend runs a AZ school in TO, so many grads cant find companys willing to take the risk, and it sucks for both partys since there are tons of new well trained drivers out there who went to proper schools, who are having difficulty finding a way into the industry unless its with a big company.

drive another dz truck then the company might eventually put you in a dump truck, but they dont need 3 years experience but insurance wont cover the driver with less then 3 years experience for the company. Its more so the company not wanting to take the risk.
