I'd say it could be because of two things. One, Riker was trying to give her a chance to choose not to kill. Two, she was physically stronger to handle the stuns and didn't stun easily. You saw, Riker had the phaser set pretty high already the last time he stunned her. I've seen other people during the series hit with a stun blast of that brief a moment and get knocked out cold. She mentions her cells were altered and her aging slowed. I feel like that gave her an immunity to a lot of things, including the strength to absorb the stuns. Riker had to set the phaser to full blast to stop her. That usually doesn't happen for someone just standing there at close proximity. I'd go more with my second reason with a twist of the first.

fireupontheearth the problem is if she can kill with a touch, she has to have the ability to do it when she wants to. Otherwise every person she inadvertently touched over the years would have died. The attempt to stun that failed then setting the phaser to kill is pretty standard, especially when you're dealing with someone with a lifelong ambition to murder the last of a family line with a microvirus. Killing Yeoman Thompson (a cute young woman) instead of Lieutenant Shea (the large black man standing beside her) was obviously meant to subvert and shock audience expectations. This scene was deliberately intended to be provocative. What if Thompson was instead shown standing alone? To anyone saying he didn't have to vaporize her, keep in mind that he used the same blast on her the first time as he did that guy in the beginning. She shrugged it off, and even a higher setting that would normally knock someone out cold or possible kill them just winded her. They didn't know the full extent of what her alterations made her capable of. All they knew is that she carried a disease that killed on touch, her aging was slowed and she was heavily resistant to phaser fire. The first shot she took was meant to knock her out without killing her, the second to kill her but keep her body intact and the third to vaporize. Because the alterations she underwent left too many unknowns and normal precautions might have been useless, Riker was justified in vaporizing her.

Great episode and the way Riker figures her out and tries to get to her, both in his quarters and here, are great. Yeah, that's why they can't just tackle her or beam her away. She's a living weapon. There's no telling what strength or hidden weapons she might have to escape from a tight corner. It's like saying the same thing about Danar, with a bioweapon, NO, you can't just assume that normal tactics will work, and beaming her away would only delay the problem, not solve it. Chorgun's life is in danger for as long as Yuta is alive. If Riker can't talk her out of her vendetta then she has to die, or Riker might as well put the phaser to Chorgun's own head, set it to vaporize and pull the trigger.

Well, easier, better solution to the problem. Riker fires at the chick at the second to last setting which seems to produce pain anyway and she seems to be limited that way. Picard grabs the dude or dude increases the distance on his own towards Riker, outside the firing arc. "Riker to Enterprise two to beam up" and problem solved. In case they couldn't transport her. Or even easier, Riker beams down activates his communicator, says beam up my signal, throws his to the dude, dude get beamed up and then people talk it out like adults.

Yuta was clearly suffering more damage & slowing down each time Riker increased the phaser settings… I’m not sure why he decided to crank it up 4 levels & completely disintegrate her when he probably could’ve just incapacitated her by raising just 1 or 2 levels. Pretty good aim for shooting from the hip. Just a little to right and Picard would have been toast.

One time I was babysitting and I had to shoo the kid away from the cookies in the cupboard. He kept going back. So instead of putting the cookies out of reach I shot him. ... Those cookies had to be saved the only way I could!
@oddish43524 жыл бұрын
That's economically unsound. Everyone knows that in a situation like that, you shoot for the leg. A deceased child doesn't need a babysitter. But a kid with one leg still does.

I guess Riker doesn't get many opportunity to play with the disintegration setting. Otherwise he could've just ran over and restrained her.

Well really don't know what kind of hidden powers she has. Trying to get up close physically restrain her is very unwise. Getting too close might be a method of her killing you. Better to use caution.

I read in a Star Trek magazine that she was a uniquely tough humanoid. The first setting was stun. The second setting was kill. The third setting was maximum. Some might say that Will vaporized either Michelle Myers or Jessica Vorhees. 😯

One of the strongest moments in TNG IMO. That said if the virus she carries to kill is in her DNA why didn't she just spit on the guy if Riker was phaser blocking her?

Erica Croft - notice how Riker kept on increasing the phaser stun setting to the point where the phaser stun setting is so high that, the phaser stun setting will KILL, VAPORIZE, etc you, even though the first setting on the phaser stun setting was more than capable of stopping everyone.
@vFavs12 жыл бұрын
I remember the first time i saw this ep. I never understood why he killed her. 1. He could have kept stunning her. 2. The guy she was going after could have gotten out of his chair and taken cover. 3. And Riker could have had her beamed directly into a holding cell. 4. Or instead of all of that, she could have kept her mouth shut and not given away the truth of her situation to her sworn enemy. This ep gets +5 for drama, but -4 for common sense.

How long did it take from the meeting started 'till Riker beamed in. Several minutes, at least. This isn't even the first scene from it. So... what took Yuta so long to try and take on Chorgan in the first place. It couldn't possibly be because of conduct. Like she says: "He's the last. Once he's dead, what happens to her doesn't matter."
@toddsmitts7 жыл бұрын
Just keep stunning long enough for Chorgan to be escorted out of the room. How hard would that have been?

Even in the face of death she continued to assault Chorgan. Apprehending Yuta was no guarantee. Even if she was imprisoned for centuries, she'd come after his children and their children and their children. And thus Riker learns a lesson about not sticking it in the crazy.
@TheBigExclusive6 жыл бұрын
Yuta was too close to her final target to risk that. She might have tried to jump or leap forward (completely willing to take another stun blast), then kill her target with a single touch. Riker had to be very careful.

@jkrasney1 Жыл бұрын
Seemingly, Yuta's body adjusted, similar to that of the Borg. As a result, each forward movement by Yuta necessitated increased phaser power.
@MichaelTheRead4 жыл бұрын
Stun was the first setting used. Strike one. She still attempted to advance. Strike two. When she attempted a third time to carry out her attack, that was strike three. Lethal force authorized. Riker turned it up to the maximum setting and vaporized her. Picard did nothing because it was clear that Riker had the situation under control. Any sudden movement on part of anyone could have caused the whole situation to escalate out of control.
@janreznak8813 жыл бұрын
Except the stun DID have an effect. A more sustained burst would have given time for the target to evacuate the room, if not actually incapacitate the girl. This was simple plot contrivance. Nothing more.

I brought up the vacuum/volume issue, I wished it was seen in a larger scale on star trek,it would look awsomely wierd. The air pressure at sea level is 15psi or a few tons per square meter. So real big starship phasers hitting a big target, like the great pyramid at Giza, more than enough to subatomically debond the entire structure. That's hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of rock mostly vanishing so there's a gigantic near vacuum shaped like the great pyramid, and the vast weight of the surrounding air would generate a spectacular implosion.

Granted there were non-lethal ways to handle this. But once we reached the point where Yuta was lunging at Chorgon, vaporising her was the best option because, stunned or dead, her presumably still-lethal-to-the-touch corpse would have fallen on Chorgan and killed him.
