@@JsoProductionChannel I don’t agree. They had more muscle maturity back then. Nowadays it’s true the legs are bigger, but they don’t look necessarily better. Today they have too much inner thigh development and not enough lower quad development. The golden era guys also used to be able to wear regular jeans and not sweatpants everywhere they went. That’s what ordinary people wanted. People want a Frank Zane or a Serge Nubret body.

Tell Franco Columbu he didn't lift heavy. Those guys lifted heavy. Sure, much of it was mind muscle connection and quality reps. The 70's to early 80's had the best physiques, iMO. Beautifully aesthetic, symmetrical and good size. Then things changed where it wasn't who had the best physique, but who looked like the biggest freak. To me, today's bodybuilders can't hold a candle to the old school physiques.

Many of the images are from the 80s and most of the 70s footage comes from the documentary ''Pumping Iron''. This is not necessarily a criticism. Just the observation that if it weren't for this bodybuilding classic, there would unfortunately not be many images that would remain from the 70s in gyms. Aside from old magazines and memory.

This was the time of no earphones or airpods but social community. No BS phones or smart phones. People were present in the moment. You trained with a training partner and if no partner you just joined a group or met someone training the body part you want to train. Helping each other with last forced sets, super sets etc. With loud hardcore music pumping to add to the atmosphere. Followed by a protein shake at the end in lobby with others discussing training etc

arnold is on point. Whenever I go to the Gym, I put on my wireless headphones, listen to my music and thats it. When I rest between sets I just stare at the floor and drink my water, then when its been a min or so, I go back to my routine of lifting. I see all these people texting, watching videos, take 10 min rests between sets while talking to someone. Even if you work out for your health, you still have to be in the zone.

As a fun fact, in my hometown we had two small gyms in 78-83 (then more and more opens and closes), and many members of the gyms knows each other from schooltimes, and so it was no matter where you be a member, it was a kind of ONE SCENE. You know him, he knows them etc, and in summer everybody was going to our public bath in the city. In one ofe these gyms there were contestants, not that big but doing contests for fun, but no one was arrogant or had bad behaviour against skinny wannabe Bodybuilders. I like to remember that time when i was 16 to 20 yrs old. And, more fun: Once i was in the public bath/pool in summer with my elder brother and my dad (both liked BB and Arnold but dont lift) i was talking to other BB i know, incl these contestants my Dad wanted to impress them (bec as a young man he was an Acrobat and trained with Pro Circus Acrobats) and shows them Flic Flac and Salto...The big guys were really impressed about this old man, they cant do that... Was a funny day. And later, when the biggest gym (where the contestants are) reopens the owner invited a real Mr.Universe, Jeff King. So i grabbed my Dad and we drove to the Gym so he saw a real Mr. Universe... And now? Both Gym Owners from the first Gyms in Town are dead now, same with my brother and my Dad... And the old Golden Era BB Scene here.

I trained at Elmo's in the Bronx. Old School vibe. Store front in the BX. Hardcore until they had to admit the hobbyist and girls. Not women. Drew in the b.s.ers killed it for most of us. The son or grand son made the financial decision that was best. The place that had been around for 20+years closed in less than two years. Elmo's gym and community centers. Basement weight rooms. Moved my lifting to the basement of my apartment building. The vibe is real. H.S. they had an agenda for my training in football. But it wasn't right for me. 20 Rep Squats. Do Or Die. Baby. Milk by the gallon. Eat right. Sleep. Meditation, go get it. That good sore feeling. Struggling to make it home on almost dead legs. Then get up and do it again tomorrow.

Whether is the current state of mental health among the 19 to 24 hear old crowd (according to the APA), or the disconnection between people on a regular basis, or the toxicity of people filming others in gyms just to ridicule them publicly, there is hardly any argument to support that social media has improved anything in our lives. I see these videos and I am so glad I lived during that era. These guys were amazing.

The camera angle in the massive gyms made them look like an industrial manufacturing site. What comes across well is the colossal energy and electrifying vibe in the Californian bodybuilding community. It was inevitable that Hollywood come knocking on their doors. They couldn’t ignore the characters at the top of the tree for long. Back in the day I often dreamed of travelling to Cali US just to be a part of that world. For me it looked the perfect dream lifestyle, that’s how my young naive teenage mind worked. But not everything that looks like Golds gym is golds…

Next up our documentary "Gold's Gym" narrated by David Attenborough. "Here you see the bodybuilder in his natural habitat. In the sun-kissed lands of Venice Beach, the 1970s Gold's Gym emerged as a sanctuary for the mighty species known as bodybuilders, each individual engaged in the relentless pursuit of physical excellence. Here, amidst the clatter of weights and the chorus of effort, these human titans carved their bodies, not unlike sculptors shaping the very essence of nature itself. It was a spectacle of strength and determination, where the laws of the jungle were written in sweat and iron, a testament to the enduring spirit of the human will."

This is the solid ground for a leading role in the bodybuilding scene. When you have an 36 centimeter arm and a 90 centimeter chest your are a really top star!!! Not to forget your extreme strength: doing squats with an amazing weight of 20 kilogram and a bench press with 8 kilos. This is great! But it sounds like it is narrated by David Attenborough. It is the bodybuilder in his natural habitat.

It's not as if there's no camaraderie in bodybuilding. The sport/endeavor has grown exponentially since the 70s. You don't have to go to California anymore. In fact, you didn't back in the 80s and 90s.......or even the 2000s. Haney lived in CA for two or three years. Then he moved back to Atlanta, GA and stayed there for the rest of his career. Yates only came to the states to compete. Then, it was back to Birmingham, England. Ronnie Coleman stayed in Texas. Plus, other competitors hung with local/state-level bodybuilders in their hometowns.
