Thanks for watching! What’s your opinion on writing names in Japanese and English? Have you ever thought about it before?

Although I'm not Japanese, I do write my name in the traditional form. My family is an enigma, and I am Dave. I enjoy these "current event", thought provoking videos. Your "Pen" video was a true masterpiece.

Haha! “Enigma” as a family name would be SO cool! And thanks! I’ll try to do more of these kinds of videos! I feel so limited these days 😅

When I was writing articles for a Japan-based news site (I use the term "news" lightly lol), our writing guidelines specified we should write names given name-family name, since we were writing for an English-speaking audience. The only exception was for historical figures whose name was already predominantly known in the family name-given name order. In my opinion I think it was a weird thing of him to make a stink about. Maybe he just has some kind of vendetta against TIMES Japan? lol

apparently the all caps thing is from France? my french friend explained it to me as such in Korea and China, youd refer to someone as Mr. Kim or Mr. Chiang, not Mr. un or Mr. Shek so thats why japanese people take name order seriously. But you are right tho about other issues related to names and regulatory reform, which Mr. Kono should look at for sure!

Interesting! I didn’t know about the all caps thing! I can’t remember now, but I always thought they put the family name first in those articles. I wonder if it’s a recent change 🤔

Drama? People are making this into a drama. If you live in Japan make it like it is done in Japan. If you live somewhere else where first comes your given name first then your middle name and the family name the last. In Japan I am KÖNIG Frederick (King Frederick translated) - In Switzerland I am Frederick König. I don't have a problem....

I didn’t mention it very much in the video, but he’s doing good things for Japan and COVID! We Stan. Would you put your surname in all caps? That’s the thing I’m most curious about! Lol I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before! Agreed, when in Rome! But also, having a middle name here causes a lot of problems lol. Especially with online forms 🙀 Hope that at least that will change in the future! Hopefully, this is the biggest drama we’ll have this year!

@@TokyoBriBri Yes, put your family name first all in caps when you are in Japan but writing in English for a Japanese newspaper even for the Japan Times. If you do it you are showing your respect to Japan. All those expats who don't want to do it they should stay at their home country. Even if they know the Japanese language very well. It is like those who are making fun about the Japlish - Japlish is the way Japan and the Japanese are using English and transforming the English words into Japanese.

That’s interesting! 😊 I’m never sure how I should address my students! Some have Arabic names and I don’t want to offend them.

one of those bruh moments on woke twitter. Literally the Japanese name is FAMILY NAME, Given Name. Why are people having a fit about it? Mr. Kono is one of the most respected dudes in Japanese politics (thats saying A LOT cuz japanese politics is nuts) so why is this a problem?
@TokyoBriBri3 жыл бұрын
Not a problem in my mind! But I’m curious if he prefers it in all caps lol
