Hello! I’m new to junk journaling. I never thought about using Kool Aid to dye with. Super smart. And the colors are so pretty! I’ll be giving this a try. Thanks! ❤️💜💚

Thanks for watching. First, if you can, let your papers air dry. I don't dry my papers in the oven anymore. Watch other videos about Kool Aid dying because there are sooooo many ways to do it. My video was made in 2018. So many new ways to dye paper. Good luck with your adventures. I want to add one more thought. I ironed my papers because I wanted them to glue things on them. Crinkled is lovely but I wanted flat. Have a great time!!

I wish I could have too! It was just mixing the water and Kool aid in a small cookie sheet and baking it on another in the oven. I don't dry dyed paper in the oven anymore. I dry some papers with doilies or molds flat on a cookie sheet overnight. That way the pattern has time to set. Sometimes I do just plain paper dying on the sheet pans too. My most favorite way is my retractable clothes line in my studio. I use basic clothes pins to hang the wet papers up and they are usually dry in the morning. In the summer when my ceiling fan is going full tilt, it takes thirty minutes or so to dry. The process is extremely beginner friendly.

I am the kind of person who leaps before I look most of the time so that explains the directions on the packets. I suggest if you use the Kool Aid not to put baking powder or baking soda in the water. Stuff stains just fine without it. Because I live in Texas and dye paper year 'round I don't use the oven anymore. I bought a retractable clothline and put it in my studio and hang my papers on the clothesline. The ceiling fan is always on so I don't use any extra power drying my papers and they are dried in about 20-30 minutes. I am too impatient for letting them dry overnight on the cookie sheets. Hope this helps!

Oh I am NOT telling him he is cool. lol! I will never live that down. The baking soda trick for silver has been around for many years. My mom used to do that. She hated polishing her good silverware for holidays. Some one is another post said something that I think answered my question in the video about the white powdery stuff I had on the sheet pans all the time. They mentioned pre-sweetened KoolAid. I am wondering how if that is the stuff that was left over and not the baking soda. Could have been a combo of the two things. I have plans to do another video and see what happens. Thanks for watching!

The video is nearly three years old. I still have a pile of the papers and the color seems to have held up very well. I have put wet medium and glues all over the pieces I collaged and they have held up pretty well. It was my first time dying paper and even though I was not wild about the texture, I thought it went pretty well. I would however not dry them in the oven anymore since I have a clothesline in my art room. Almost none of them smell like the flavors I used and that was disappointing. I thought a book that smelled like the fruits would be kind of interesting.

Do you have to use the oven to dry them? Can outside in the sun work? How long are they in the oven at what temperature?
@MessyTableStudio4 жыл бұрын
You do not have to use an oven to dry them. I have an expandable clothesline in my craft room and hand papers on it like laundry with clothespin. I have the ceiling fan going and they dry in about 20 to 30 minutes depending on how wet they are. I don't hand drippy saturated papers. You can also buy cheap cookie sheets from a dollar store and just leave the paper to dry on the sheet on their own. That process takes a few days but yields some great marbling on the paper. I would think drying in the sun with a rock on top would work, but just not a super windy day. I had the oven at 250 and stood right over it to try not to cook the paper or have a fire in the oven. I can't tell you how long they were in the oven but it was pretty quick.

First, I am sorry for your loss. I have been married for 41 years and don't know what I would do without the old boy. My father died after my parents had been married 43 years and I truly do not know how on earth my mother carried on as long as she did. I laugh every day at all the dumb things I do, and how in the end they aren't half bad! It certainly shocks me. If we lived closer we might get into all kinds of trouble. Keep in touch!

What a clever technique. Never saw this one and it maybe something I will try. Guess it's important to bake the paper? I actually liked the baking soda addition. Thanks!

gloria Eike Gloria, I baked my papers at 250 degrees and took them out when they were mostly dried. I dry them in the oven because I don't have a lot of space to hang papers in the studio. Plus I am impatient and want to see them done. If you hang dry them, you will not have extra crispy papers like I did. There is a video on KZbin that talks about the baking soda. I probably should have watched the whole thing before I started. Lol! Dye some papers. It is so interesting how they turn out so differently. Thanks for watching.

Could you either link the video or just give us the name of the person/video? It is always fun to see this kind of thing!

Kathleen, I will if I can remember where I saw it. I only watched about two seconds of it and then moved on.

Ahhh, been there. And, if I'm on my tablet, I cannot easily go back without loosing my place. From what I have seen, it is used as a mordant to help the color to take.

did you use cold or hot water and like 2 cups???? Oven set at??? And how long were they in the oven? I am going to try these...... Sandy

I wrote a reply and guess did not hit the blue button. I used really warm water so that the crystals would dissolve faster. I did have some left at the end, and just added a wee bit more warm water and then dissolved the rest of the way. I hope you had good luck with your papers.

Oh wow those colours are very kooool 😎😎 I don't know what koolaide is but they make great dyed papers.... sounds are fab too 😊😊😊
@MessyTableStudio6 жыл бұрын
Elaine, Koolaid is a fruit flavored drink usually in powder form you mix with water. Grew up drinking it instead of water, which was way healthier. Where do you live, USA or someplace else? I could send you some envelopes of it for you to play with.

Hi Vickie I'm in UK we don't have it here. I thought it was a drink of some sort. The purple one is rather gorgeous and cherry came out very dark and scrummy too. I was thinking of trying some organic things to see how they go. Turmeric looks rather interesting I was watching some one early today using spices and other things. 😊😊😊

It is a drink but usually little kids drink it. It comes in powder form and then you add water to it.

Fun! Love the colors and the crunchy-sounds the papers make! Do they smell all fruity once dried?
@MessyTableStudio6 жыл бұрын
Cat Hand Sadly, no. I had hoped they would. Not even a faint smell. I did let them sit over night and ironed them the next day. I might have ruined any possibility of smell by ironing them?

Bummer! Oh well, they’re beautiful nonetheless. 😊

What kind of paper did you use. Love this video

I used just plain white computer paper that I bought at Office Max. It worked really well.

Do you have a tutorial on drying ?
@MessyTableStudio4 жыл бұрын
On drying? No. I do one of three methods:. Oven, air drying or heat gun. The oven is usually set at 250 degrees and I watch it like a hawk to be sure the paper doesn't catch on fire.

Just curios why did you add baking soda?
@MessyTableStudio5 жыл бұрын
I watched some else's video who said to add baking soda. I can't remember why, but at the time it seemed to make sense.

Thank you for the video! Did you bake or air dry the papers? Lynn
@MessyTableStudio4 жыл бұрын
In the oven at 250 degrees. I kept looking at them to see when they were dry. I can't tell you how long that was. Some papers were more saturated than others. Hope that helps.

How much baking soda? I use kool aid all the time to dye my yarns. I'm a knitter. So I never use b.soda. hmmmm interesting. Well it says it makes 2 quarts so you add 2 quarts of water to make a half gallon of koolaid. But not that amount to dye with or it will be like the white one that should have come out pink
@MessyTableStudio5 жыл бұрын
I am a knitter too. After all is said and done, I would not add baking soda. I still can not figure out what purpose it served to do that. I think it was unnecessary. I doubt it set the color and it left a white residue on my paper and my pans. My best advise is to skip it and just use water by itself.

I tried mine with food color just today, weird how this showed up in my recommendations. I did purple and green and it turned out so well.
@MessyTableStudio4 жыл бұрын
I did talk about adding food coloring to the yellow papers because the Kool Aid barely left any color. Maybe that is why?
