I’m an American. I’ve spent 7 years between Iraq and Afghanistan. As a soldier and as a security contractor. Yes we have an amazingly powerful military. But brother, let me tell you, I’ve spent some time with the South Korean ROK Army and let me say this. You guys are badass! I’ve seen the way you train. I’ve seen the way you conduct yourselves on the battle field. You are a strong, fit, smart, and brave force. Very well disciplined. Much more than other countries I’ve also worked with which I will not name. Yes hypothetically America would win. Means nothing to me. We are allies and if I was pinned down and the ROK Army showed up to help me out, I’d feel pretty damn good in that moment. Be proud of your country. You have my respect Sir.

@@jonathanrisher8541 ; Well I’ve never worked with or fought against either. So all I can go on is by what I’ve seen on video. I watch a KZbin channel called The Enforcer. He does a great job covering the war there. I can give you my honest opinion of each. Ukrain: Very impressed. I think they have earned the respect of many warriors. They are doing very well considering their limited resources. Judging by their accuracy of artillery strikes, proficiency with tanks, handling of small arms, I would say they are one of the better trained forces. Being honest here, I would say the average Ukrainian solder is on par with the average American soldier. You also have to factor in that they are fighting for their homeland and are highly motivated. Russia: Oh boy. Where do I begin? I think Russia has shocked the world by how pathetic their military is. They don’t use good tactics. Poor leadership. They seem to not communicate well between units. Their 40 mile long convoy of bumper to bumper vehicles with no fuel for weeks was hilarious. Russia is what you would call a paper military. When you look at their military force by the numbers, on paper, they are impressive. More tanks than Americans. Very strong Air Force. Sizable Navy. The problem with Russia is they have this huge military but they have an economy about the size of Spain. There is no way they can maintain all that equipment on a 50 Billion dollar budget. America has a budget 10 times that size and every bit is needed to maintain our equipment. If you noticed all the footage of the wheeled APCs and trucks broken down and shot out in some of the videos. Almost all had flat tires. That tells me a few things. They don’t have run-flats in their tires where Americans have them in all their vehicles. At least to my knowledge. It also tells me that their vehicles aren’t moved much and the cheap Chinese tires they use are dry rotted. This tells me they lack the money to train with these vehicles. They just park them for wars. You can also see how badly their tanks smoke which means they aren’t changing out the filters like they should. The fuel crisis with Russian vehicles isn’t due to not having fuel. They have plenty. They just lack the fuel trucks to support such a large force. Especially an invading force. They also lack forward mechanic support for their vehicles. This is why you see so many farmers stealing the tanks and APCs left broken down on the roads in Ukrain. This is nothing new to Russia. They did this same thing in WW2. They spent all their money and resources on planes and tanks while refueling and maintenance was an afterthought. Americans had to provide them with all the extra equipment they didn’t think to get for themselves. It really takes a well funded, well trained, and well supplied force to invade another country that possesses a halfway decent military. Russia does not have the means to conduct a long winded war in another territory. They needed to win this think in one week and they really needed 2 or 3 times the invading force equipped with plenty of fuel, munitions, food and maintenance support. They just don’t have it. It costs a crap load of money to have that. Russia is also a dying country. They have the largest land mass by far of all the countries, yet only have 90 million people and their population is shrinking. This kinda seems like Putin’s last chance at reviving Russia. Not going so well though. If you want to see the absolute worst trained soldiers in that whole conflict right now, take a look at the Chechen soldiers. Holy cow! Can’t hold a rifle correctly. Flagging each other all the time. Spraying and praying. Just a joke. When people talk about the might of America’s military, I look at it like this. We aren’t extraordinary. We’re not the greatest thing since sliced bread. It’s all boils down to money. I asked an Iraqi fighter Pilot back in 2004, how many hours a year he flew. He said about 3 hrs. Compare that to the average Air Force pilot who gets about 200 hrs. Same thing with soldiers. They qualify every year in marksmanship. Takes a few thousand rounds to do that per soldier. The costs add up big time. Any nation can achieve the same thing if they are willing to pay for it. That’s all it is man.

Now I well say this: I honestly thought by the sheer mass of Russia will overwhelm Ukraine in a matter of days if not, a week at best. And it's just not me. Most people in the U.S thought Ukraine was done for. All Putin had to do was threaten the West long enough for him to win the war so things can go back to normal on his end.......to my shock, Ukraine has been repelling Russia's attacks again and again at their capital to the point where the Russian army just gave up. I should also point out that Russia is ranked 2 on military power (so it was said on military comprehension videos) with an up-to-date military. Ukraine on the other hand, is still using weapons from WW2 with their outdated military. Let's not forget how resourceful the Ukraine army has been in this invasion. But Russia......i too honestly don't know where to begin. Base on the videos I'm seeing, they lack discipline. Their morale is dangerously low to the point where troops are turning against each other and having doubts about the war. They have committed war crimes then lied and tried to cover it up. There are also recordings where Russian soldiers are breaking in stores, businesses, and houses just to loot for food, money or anything valuable so they can put it in their tanks and carry it away.

@@jonathanrisher8541 Yup. I think China has been ranked number 2 and Russia 3. I could be wrong though. But it would make sense. I believe China has the second largest defense budget. But yeah. On paper you can count up Russia’s equipment. Then you find out the poor condition of the equipment. I think they estimate only 10% of Russia’s tanks are operational. So if that’s true, they don’t have 12,400 tanks. They have about 1,240. Where as America has 8,725 tanks. Of which I would guess 95% are operational. So who really has more tanks? And we can refuel them. So like I said. Russia is a paper Tiger. They have to defend a land mass 1.7 times bigger than the US on 1/10th the budget and 1/4th the population.

@Smoke King That’s a beautiful thing to say! A lot of times people are judged here for getting involved in foreign fights. My fathers friend was drafted to Vietnam and when they got back they were spat on by children. It felt like no one cared for what they went through. He ended up sniffing glue to escape and he didn’t live long. It’s nice to hear that the world doesn’t always view us as the bad guys. Plus the youth of both South Korean and Japan seem so much like America that it feels like you guys are part of us, one global nation

The scariest thing about the US military is its logistics. The sheer enormity of supply needed to run a carrier group is staggering, and there aren't just one. As we've seen recently, it doesn't matter how good your equipment is if you can't keep it supplied, and that's where the US is unparalleled.

Yes, but I can understand the confusion, while being a separate branch of the military, the Marines buy most of their equipment through the Navy, aircraft for example are purchased through the navy, and the Marine pilots and ground crew train in the Navy training pipeline.

I think this may be an error of translation from Korean to English? In many languages the word "marine" (I mean the equivalent word in their language) is what describes the closest warships and sea. As a matter fact the U.S Marines (USMC) kind of borrowed the word "marine" from the French language, which means the equivalent of "navy" in French. The actual English word "navy" is a bit of a weirdly sounding oddity for other languages. Let's say America had two military branches named U.S Air Force (for low altitude helicopters supporting troops on the ground) and the other branch named U.S Atmosphere Force (for high altitude jet fighters and bombers). Well, a translator may prefer to use the word "air force" in English as better sounding to describe the high altitude jet fighters and bombers. (Other languages have nothing referred to as "atmosphere force", it sounds weird and ambiguous to them.) Then to American speakers that'd be technically wrong, if their high altitude military branch was actually named "U.S Atmosphere Force" and not "U.S Air Force". Hope this all makes sense, thanks for attending my TED talk.

@@ufia The reason they are called Marines actually comes from the 18th century, when soldiers that were stationed on ships (different from the sailors) were called marines. Both the French and the English called them that, and the term stayed in use for the American Navy, and the branch was named back when their primary duties were that of the 18th century marine: soldier on a ship tasked with shooting from the rigging and doing boarding operations.

I believe we cover S.Korea and Japan under our nuclear umbrella, guaranteeing if China tried to deploy thermonuclear weapons against them, it would invite immediate response from the US Military. I have zero doubt in my mind, that we have Ohio-class submarines waiting and loitering in the south china sea ready with Trident SLBMs at the ready. The Minuteman 3 is scary, but the Trident can carry up to 8 450kt warheads and it would take just a matter of minutes for the SLBM to deploy it's packages. It's one of the reasons we havn't bothered with upgraded ICBM missiles and are still using the same ones from the 70s, and why we've virtually phased out any form of gravity or air launched nuclear missile like the AGM 129, which was a stealth cruise missile. (Kinda feel like the stealth design should come back for those missiles even if they just outfit them with a HE submunition warhead.)

No need to be ashamed. I was in Pohang in the late 80s for one of the Team Spirit exercises. Just across a fence line was a training facility for the ROK Marines. We used to hear them get smoked by their drill instructors all hours of the day and night. Occasionally they would come over and we would trade uniform items and other stuff. They were tough as nails and we always had a ton of respect for them. And we were US Marines. Nothing but respect!

I read an article about South Korean troops in Vietnamn.It was a weirdly named article..the title was(and there was colors involved)Horses ..tigers ..and something else.My dad had fought there 68-70..and he said "Their hardcore,some of the best troops and most brutal troops he had fought beside".He had a very high opinion of ROK forces in general and the Marines in particular.Unfortunately he passed away..and there is no way to go further into that conversation.

Indeed, that's one of the most overlooked advantages the US military has. We have *loads* of experience that gets passed down to new officers that other countries just don't have. China for example, even if their navy was on par with ours (not even close in terms of tonnage or capability), they don't have a 200 year old naval tradition. They don't even have a 20 year old one. The last time China operated a decent navy they got blown the fuck out by the British in the Opium Wars. They don't have those decades of experience of operating a modern blue water navy like the US does. That matters a *lot.*

I would think the example if Ukraine would point out that sufficiently motivated civilians can be turned into efficient effective soldiers. The issue with his perception of the lack of interest of the civilians in the RIC us maybe due to the fact that they haven't had a war since the 1950s, while the US has been actively involved in ground actions for most of the last century. That's a hell of a way to get experience.

@@stompingpeak2043 I agree. When you're talking about elite forces (Seals, Rangers, etc) no doubt the training is there, it's extensive and extremely strenuous. It makes or breaks people. But regular IET and AIT, and the training you get at the unit lvl annually has definitely become soft. Before I got out in 2017, they were giving kids 10min break cards in IET, if it was becoming too much emotionally. You can only counsel now and that doesn't follow them when they move. No corrective action whatsoever.

The main threats are North Korea, China, and Russia... each one a threat to Korea and Japan, but our military alliance, our friendly agreement with your government, and economic dependence on Japanese and Korean electronics would certainly require us to protect the Korean skies in the event of a war. So be brave friend, our army is also your army. We would not let you go it alone.

On top of that the vast majority of Americans have firearms and are very heavily immersed in gun culture. There are very very few countries in the world where they have the sort of freedom we do with guns as civilians. We wouldnt necessarily know military tactics but we would be able to shoot and we also have a very large number of citizens. Invading and attacking the US would be a logistical nightmare for ANY country.

My Uncle served in Vietnam, he said the South Korean fighters were tough folk. He said he felt better if they were along because they had disciple that was unmatched both inside and outside the wire, and especially under fire.

You know what? My great-uncle (so my grandfather's brother) was one of the first four jet fighter pilots of the ROKAF. Flew F-86s. My dad was was a ROK Marine for six years and saw action in Vietnam and was serving as plainclothes CID when the opportunity come to the US and join the US Army happened. He put retired after 23 years, last year of service saw him pin my butterbar on return my first salute is an 11A. I've got cousins who have or are serving in various US and ROK services and have relatives that have served in both and the truth of it is, if you plan to make a career of military service, there is no better nation to do it than the US.

Recognizing deficiencies is the first step to stepping up the game. Second, unimportant, I love your voice. I agree with this Korean soldier that being neat and clean should not be an important factor to concentrate on, but it is important overall as a person and a representation of the country. Respect and honor your country. American soldiers are also expected to be clean and organized, look presentable at all times.

Have to remember that South Korea is a lot smaller country than here in the states, also its gdp is far smaller than the US. Also smaller countries like South Korea don't have to have huge militaries because we have contracts with them that if any country was too attack such as North Korea the US would immediately deploy troops to aid and protect South Korea and its people. This is the reason that we have so many military bases all over the world so we can be aid and protection at a moments notice.

It would be interesting to see Korean or N. Korean force's reaction to the effect of Western (including US) training for Ukraine forces. Unit cohesion, Flexible command structures and discipline have made a HUGE difference despite the size and force disparity between Russia and Ukraine.

That's the reason the US hasn't enforced a no fly zone, which would be the most effective thing for Ukraine. Drones are really powerful.....when you're fighting tribal militias in the mountains of afghanistan, or the sands of Iraq....Russia has had the tech to knock our drones out of the sky for a while. S-300 and S-400 launchers are still considered to be some of the best in the world, and then their self-propelled Tunguska vehicles would be nightmarishly effective against drones or even helos. Drones work really well once radar systems have been knocked out, so rather than send in drones, if we sent in F-35s in a ground attack loadout and knocked out Russian air defenses, drones could become marginally useful.

Hey ROK dude (if you happen to check these comments. I understand you want to improve your defensive forces and general capabilities, and there's no doubt you would have to be on the front lines against North Korean aggression. However, I must stress, that the US population as a whole, largely supports the ROK. We love your culture, admire your character, and are permanent allies. So, while you work on improving your national capabilities which is to be expected and noticeable given your development of new jets and very impressive tanks and self propelled howitzers, just understand that the US is there next to you. The dedication to prevent and respond to any aggression from NK or China, should be apparent based on the permanent forces based in ROK and Japan, as we project US military forces in Asia to defend both of those countries, in addition to Taiwan, the Philippines, Australia, and Malaysia. Love from the US. : )

I concur with @Robin Borkowski. I want to add that in the US Military, small things matter also. There are regulations for hair, nails, uniform, etc. In the US military you must be clean shaven (only some people have exceptions) and your hair must not be passed a certain length. Being in the military is a profession, so you are to look and act like a professional.

I've always thought Japan & Korea should build one or more what I call Super Oilers. A vessel with a helicopter flight deck capable of launching V-22s & F-35Bs in an emergency, but... It's primary propose is to create synthetic JP-5 from air, sea water and electricity to provide fuel for the fleet and aircraft. It would have one or more nuclear power stations and convert the electricity into fuel. It could be used in national emergencies or in war.

I got train with the RoK Marines in 1979and these guys were good at most things then. They were Professnal in Commando Tactics and in training. I was there with the US Marines. Their biggest problem was they were not properly equipped by the South Korean Government due to fear they would revolt and overthrow the Government Officials in power.
