This week's FAPFAP came a bit early, because we're about to drive to the airport for our flight to LA! So here's our video of what a Korean Rest Stop is like and the food we go on our way to G-Dragon's Villa :D

Simon - that's so mean! My partner counts down to force me to pick too and I hate it! :( The food looked good though, and that metal cup/recycle thing is an awesome idea! We get Nongshim cup/packet noodles here too, and they're my favourite brand (even though they cost more than your run of the mill instant noodles). Have fun in LA!

Ugh, I can't believe I'm going to defend the honor of the American rest stop, but all of the ones I've been to in the I80 corridor are nice. I sometimes want to move into to the ones on the turnpike in Indiana (Iowa to Penna is a long drive). Ohio has the best gift shops and Penna. has pretty nice shops too. They all have at least one restaurant, nice bathrooms, convenience stores, little blips about state history etc. The ones in Iowa are pretty groovy too, even though 80 doesn't have tolls here. We also have the worlds largest truck stop! There is a dentist office, chiropractor, hostel type rooms, homestyle restaurant, etc.
@thesheranime10 жыл бұрын
In the US (or where I've been) we have several different thing. Rest area is a vague term that means bathroom, vending machine, a place to rest/stretch your legs. Rest stop offer a little more. Service station means gas, bathroom. Service areas offer that, a store and maybe a restaurant. Welcome centers have bathrooms, stores, restaurant, gas and info. I get confused with the difference between travel centers and Plazas both bigger than the others, better restaurants and a bigger store but one has shower facilities and the other does not. Also, some of these are chains so that offer specialized services depending on clientele (Buses, truckers, RVs, etc.)
@jacquelinebell52310 жыл бұрын

Why does American have to be so cheap. You want a simple bottle of water and sometimes it can even cost like 3 dollars for one dumb bottle. (Depending on where you are). The cups looks like a good idea. More Eco friendly and free!

The rest areas in America vary from each state I've been to ones where they have tourist info, vending machines and bathrooms to where they have a store and restaurants. It really depends! But in Italy I was blown away by them! They had all freshly made food and you had tons of options. They were def a step above! They seem to be similar to the ones in korea.

next time you go to a korean rest stop you should try street food(?) type thingies, like 통감자 (small, whole potatoes in a cup), squid, (핫바) hot bar etc! They're considered to be a must when getting snacks from rest stops! (especially the potato)

In Texas we have BUC-EES and its like the best rest stop ever... the restrooms are HELLA NICE and the food is soooo delicious. The only thing is there's no where to sit and eat, no where to rest and no where to get massages so.... whoomp. Buc-ees is only in TX, so i get sad traveling anywhere else bc most of the rest stops are shitty toilets and vending machine snacks. T_T

Okay! I have to defend rest stops in the southeast US! (Did I really just say that?) Florida's Turnpike has been re-doing its rest stops to be awesome; they look just like the one S&M stopped at. Also, there are rest stop chains like Pilot's, Love's, and one known in Texas called Buc-ee's. They're huge! Equipped with restaurants, 7/11-style areas, gift shops, all that jazz! (Not to mention the amenities for truckers.) The small rest stops with outdated bathrooms or just vending machines are usually owned by the state or federal government.
@iBeFloe10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, FL's aren't *that* bad! I went down there 2 weeks ago & it was pretty decent. (Granted there's a lot of empty land then land full of people then more empty land...it's really...weird. lol Anyhow off-topic) They're pretty nice/clean for the most part but they're not as good as we saw in the video xD

Not a lot of people in the US go to rest stops. We only stop if someone is literally about to shit their pants. Our gas stations are pretty cool, like the all mighty Quiktrip, the holy grail of roller food.
@trentonm668810 жыл бұрын
Woah compared to this the rest stops in North America suck! They have vending machines and like a bathroom but this korean one has restaurants and stuff.
@raeesmerelda10 жыл бұрын
I'd say that describes most interstate rest stops (unless it's worse, like way out west where there's no plumbing O_o), but the PA Turnpike has plazas like this, usually with a place to get gas (price is usually ridiculous), some kind of mini-convenience store, a Starbucks, and sometimes a few fast-food places. Then again, you have to pay to use that road, so maybe that's why?
@jerrypie10 жыл бұрын
Well I think you need to take into account how much smaller Korea is than America. It's easier to build expensive stops because they don't have to build as many.

Had a late night the last night (up til two o'clock finishing an essay and my friend was staying with me, and she was sick as a dog), had an early class 8 o'clock and then a two o'clock exam. By the time the exam rolled around, I was so tired/exhausted that I couldn't read the letters and the numbers. I crashed at my dorm right after, and didn't wake up until the next day at around noon.

In Texas, be have Buc-ees and it's basically a huge gas station type rest stop. It's usually clean and sells souvenirs, coffee, drinks, food/snacks and it's wonderful! (*whispers* and it's bathrooms are clean too) ♥ It's a Texas-centered rest stop, so when traveling to other states I have to 'make-do' with smaller rest stops. People are complaining about how cheap America rest stops are and how Koreas rest stops are just fabulous. I personally see a rest stop as a place with a bathroom and some stores like Starbucks. Florida's rest stops are really nice on the turnpike I can use the bathroom, get me my mocha frappe and some cookies and go back on the road. Koreas own looks like a small plaza which is ok I guess. I don't need to buy me shoes and if I did then I'll just go off an exit and find a Payless lol.

They pretty look like Japanese rest zones ! I was impress by them when I was in JP because there is so much restaurant, they arent crappy and you can buy gifts ( well in Japan there is food gift box everywhere lol ). And nice surprise to see there have Katakana under the hangul ! Does they put it in each menu in Korea ???
@davodiank10 жыл бұрын
It's not katakana it's called hanja in Korean. It's traditional Chinese script.
@Kataomisan10 жыл бұрын
DavodianK Those are Katakana. For exemple, if you look at the last word into the yellow part of the menu it's written bellow the hangul word : チャジャンミョン and in roman letter that give : chajanmyon What I guess is the japanese equivalent for : chajangmyun I can see some hiragana and kanji in the menu thought....but it's mainly katakana.
@davodiank10 жыл бұрын
Haha you're right, my bad. If you were in reference to Kanji that would be a different story and my point would hold. LOL I must have been looking somewhere else. The reason for having Katakana is most likely due to the large amount of Japanese tourists who pass through the rest stop (not so many nowadays as more Chinese tourists are common to see around Korea).
@Kataomisan10 жыл бұрын
DavodianK That is what surprised me. I mean China is nearer than Japan so I wouldnt have surprise to see chinese kanji everywhere. I just wonder if there is a lot of places in korea that have katakana on menu or stuff like that. Since I'm reading hiragana and Katakana it would be a good help when visiting korea.
