Hey Simon and Martina, This is a really random idea, but could you maybe do a TL;DR on "service mind" in Korea? Because in Korea you'll get a free face pack when you enter a makeup store, or they'll throw in a little extra something whenever you're shopping... but in Australia there isn't much of this happening -.-

I remember one time my cousin bought diapers for her kid and they gave her a free kids bike I was like WHAT THE HELL THE BIKE IS MORE EXPENSE THAN THE DIAPERS, but here in Melbourne you won't seen an extra thing strapped on to a package anywhere

Actually, red bean and sweet pumpkin porridge can be eaten as dessert as you guys say in this video, but I think they are more considered to be replaceable to a meal, especially the savory ones, just like any other porridge out there. Red bean porridge has been traditionally eaten during/at the winter solstice, because of the belief that red beans repel ghosts (like it was shown in the drama Arang and the Magistrate!), and since winter solstice equals to the longest night (and hence most chances for ghosts to haunt). Kind of interesting that this video about a traditional winter solstice food came out on the first day of spring :D. I was literally lol at the LOTR parts. My roommate stared at me weirdly as she passed by. AHHHH... I wonder how 'Lim legolas' ( a korean legolas) would look like. A 'mane of glory' (DramaBEANS) like those in the historical dramas would be a definite must! ~fangirling with fangirlina~

I actually really love Korean red bean porridge, but then I love red beans. I think you LIKE red beans, you will love red bean porridge. There was one place that I used to go to korea that had the red bean and pumpkin porridge, but then it also had western-style rice-based porridge as well. I loved it!

There's actually a great red bean porridge place in Samchung-dong (서울서 둘째로 잘하는 집 Second best in Korea) It's a really traditional place, from the building to the way their red bean porridge is prepared. The people who make it are all old ladies. So it's not very sweet at all. And there's some wonderful rice punch they have too ^^

In Jamaica we love pumpkin and red bean. We always eat pumpkin with dumplings or use it to make soup and we use red beans to make soup and rice and beans (we call it rice & peas). I love bean soup, rice & beans and pumpkin soup though I've never had pumpkin by itself (other than when my mom fed me as a baby), in pumpkin soup the pumpkin gets crushed and you don't really taste it because of the seasonings and meat flavour. We also like porridge in Jamaica but we mostly make oat, corn (hominy), banana, plantain and cornmeal porridge, those look super interesting and I'd like to try them one day.

Simon/Martina!! THE BEST patjuk in Seoul is in Samcheong-dong. It's tiny place called "The Second Best in Seoul." A few little ajjumas make it all from scratch. Not too sweet, a little cinnamon-y, traditional style, just SO GOOD! You must go! They also serve weird teas made from antlers and stuff. The next best patjuk is "Dong Bing Go" in Ichon-dong. There are actually a bunch of patjuk places on that same street but this one's THE best! They make both patjuk and patbingsu. I got one of each last time I went ;) The wait may be long but it's SO worth it. Let me know if you go!

patjuk is my ultimate comfort food. my family is from korea, even though i was born in the USA. my dad's side are from jeollado (which some might not know, but it's the mother of all country sides.. LOL). I used to live with my aunt and uncle (from my dad's side obvi), and she used to make me this all the freaking time! I found out later that there's two different types of basic patjuk after my mom (whos from seoul) made some for me: the "country patjuk" and the "city patjuk." the country patjuk has dduk (rice cakes) in it and the city patjuk has rice... I guess i'm a country girl because i HATEEEEE THE CITY PATJUK. lol the fun of the country patjuk was sticking your tongue through the dduck (: ahhh.... i want patjuk now TT___TT
