I think in american scary movies and shows, jumpscares got old. So that’s why psychological scares are more popular. Jump scares anymore aren’t really scary anymore because you’re anticipating it. But psychological scares stick with you.

Psychological thrillers are America’s theatrical backbone, thanks to Alfred Hitchcock. We did have a period in the early 2000’s, when it became clear Hollywood was losing their creative minds, when directors started remaking or copying Japanese and Korean jump scare movies. It took a long while, but we are slowly working our way back to what we were w/ “Us”, “Candyman” (technically it’s a sequel), “Get Out”, “Quiet Place”, and “It”. We started to get called back to normal on TV when the show, “Heroes” aired its first 2 seasons; and its main villain was played by Zachary Quinto, the same man in American Harry Story. He’s a rock star at making himself appear detached and dead inside for creepy scenes when his character just talked to other characters, just like that woman in American Horror Story, the viewer immediately felt fear for the soon to be victims and would yell, “RUN!”. He later won our hearts, again, as Spock, on Star Trek. He’s just outstanding! It’s a slow process, but we’re trying to get back to our roots of psychological thrillers; movies that get under your skin and sit w/ you for YEARS…like The Birds, Vertigo, Child’s Play (only the 1st one), Dolls, When A Stranger Calls, When A Stranger Calls Back, Omen, The Jacket (1 of MY favorites), The Box, The Cell, The Butterfly Effect, Memento, Gerald’s Game, Misery, The Circle, Black Swan, Seven, Signs, The Village, Old, Shutter Island, Identity, The Gift, Secret Window, Sliver, Donnie Darko, Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs, The Prestige, The Talented Mr. Ripley. We are good w/ movies that bend/break/mis-shape the reality we ALL know and love and then suddenly make you afraid of it…now you check the back seat of a car before getting in, you turn on the lights in the house instead of walking in the dark, you take mental notes when someone tells some IS that you know wasn’t so you can sense when you’re possibly being gaslit, etc.

Season 1 has events based on true stories. Elizabeth short (one of the characters) AKA The Black Dahlia was murdered and bisected at the waist Season 2 Dr Thredson was based on Ed Gein Season 3 Madame LaLaurie was real and actually had slaves. She was based in New Orleans like said in the show Season 4 Jimmy was based on Grady Stiles and a few other characters on this season were also based on real life events/stories Season 5 The countess was a real person. The hotel Cortez is based on The Cecil Hotel which is where lots of incidents have happened (Elisa Lam suspiciously died and was found in a water tank, Richard Ramirez lived/hid there in the midst of his killings, etc) Season 6 I’m not really sure about this one?? Season 7 Based on the 2016 United States election where Donald Trump was elected for presidency. Season 8 Just recounts stuff about season 1 and 3 but goes a little more in depth with the aftermath Season 9 Based on true events that occurred during the 1980s, mainly focuses on Richard Ramirez aka the night stalker Season 10 Not sure if this is based on a true story but.. yeah!!

Season Six was one they watched, Roanoke. It’s based on the Roanoke Colony in the Carolinas that was mysteriously abandoned, everyone was thought to have been murdered by either Native tribes or taken hostage by the Spanish. There was no trace, except the word CROATOAN carved in a tree.

Governor: **ends up spending 3 years in England bc of war or something** Governor: **gets back to find everyone gone** Governor: **sees the word "Croatoan," the name of a Native American tribe, carved into a post** Croatoan tribe: **has members and children with pale skin, blonde hair, and blue eyes** Everyone: "What could have happened to the lost colonists of Roanoke????"

Americans do a lot of jumpscares in movies. I think "American horror story" is pretty unique. I haven't really seen a lot of good horror stuff around. The last one that I found pretty scary was "Stories to tell in the dark" It just hit differently. Otherwise, horror films are just all like the conjuring and bunch of jumpscares or even worse, those moments when they build up to a jumpscare but then nothing happened.

Asylum is the reporter that infiltrated the famous New York City mental institution for three days trying to get the story. This reporter found it was so bad and not following any protocols and letting people die while being completely overcrowded to the point that sanitation didn’t even exist. The reporter’s boss had to step in and get that reporter out. The newspaper had a field day and the hospital was shut down because the public outcry. The patients were moved to better places and some even recovered. The mental institution still exists near the city but it’s long been abandoned and no one wants the land because of it’s history and it’s haunted nature. Also it’s considered a historic site for some reason. Honestly no one ever goes there except maybe security. The land was built up just a bit with security cameras and a huge fence to keep people out but really no one even wants to step foot on that place not even teenagers. Urban explorers don’t even try because it’s not worth it.
