Yes, we almost never use the terms RoK and DPRK, it's always South Korea and North Korea. So a random person on the street getting them wrong would be sort of understandable. But if you're commenting the opening ceremony of the Olympics, you need to put in a little bit of effort to get stuff right. I'm honestly baffled how they could get it wrong considering the team was literally carrying a huge banner with the correct name on it.

Why South Korea doesn’t change its name to include democratic word too in order to avoid confusion
@yuugen9993 ай бұрын
If they had the same name it would be even more confusing. They would have to change something else along with it. Maybe "Democratic Republic of South Korea". But since both governments claim the entire Korean peninsula as their territory, if South Korea were to put "south" in its official name, it would be like admitting defeat and giving up their claims to the North Korean territory. The Korean war never ended in official terms... They never signed it. It's a complicated political issue. Edit: I forgot that North Korea also has the word "People" in it. So I guess it wouldn't be such a bad idea if South Korea added the word "Democratic". There would still be a difference. But the best way would be for North Korea to remove the word "Democratic" from its name, obviously haha They're the ones who created this confusion, with their lies and propaganda.

For most people from Central and Eastern Europe, especially from a bit older generations (like over 40 years old), I think the difference between "Republic" and so-called "Democratic People's Republic" is obvious. Because all the communist states, at the times of the Iron Curtain in Europe, were also called like that - so the People's Republics. And in all the communist constitutions there were also such phrases as "people's democracy" or "proletariat's dictatorship" and other rubbish - because in fact it was just one big lie, in communist countries there was no democracy at all, and these were also ordinary people, including workers, who wanted so much the communism to fall (which finally was possible in 1989).

That’s all a bit shameful, because the athletes normally identify with their country very much and it must be really annoying to be mislabled in moments of great joy like while receiving a medal. Should not happen - or at least be corrected promptly with appologies. But one thing I am pretty sure: These things are not done intentionally. And I would refrain from claiming it is - because it does not help in the current times of international tension and insecurities. That‘s being said: Of course South Korea is very well known in Europe :) It‘s very much „in trend“ at the moment.

About ordinary people confusing people coming from one nation with other nations, probably in most cases it's not really intentional, or racist, just ignorant - which can however be indeed very annoying. And You are right that people coming from Slavic nations hate being confused by anyone, anyhow with Russians (or their language being confused with Russian as well). But confusing states with each other at such a formal occasion is a completely different situation, because such events should be carefully prepared in advance and well organized, and such ignorant errors just shouldn't happen there.
@holoinfinity46913 ай бұрын
@@MayaTheDecemberGirl In MOST cases, I'm not that upset when ppl get the two confused esp in this casse. But this was a whole committee for an official global event. It's embarrassing for them & us Koreans. Also depends on intent. If ppl come up to be clearly curious what my ethnicity but ask "where you from" then fine. But asking "Are you Chinese, Japanese?" is rude. Not many Americans know the difference between ethnicity vs nationality either which I find sad but not completely their fault, it's the flawed education. It's also when ppl come up clearly based on their tone they don't care "what kind of Asian" I am, they just ask out of ignorance. I will gladly let anyone ask for my ethnicity. But assuming an Asian can't speak English or can't be an American is ignorant. I've had so-called American friends (all white Americans) who said anything written with non Western letters (a-z whether accents present or not) are Asian or Middle Eastern. Even had teacher see me write my feelings (out of boredom) in Korean on scrap paper & asked "Oh what's this say? I can't read Chinese or Japanese". Again I never blame anyone unless they're attitude shows they're careless. Luckily, ppl overtime have just learned to be more cautious & ask questions & accept to be educated if they do ask something not politically correct.
@MayaTheDecemberGirl3 ай бұрын
@@holoinfinity4691 It's a bit surprising that people in the US have such attitude as You say - taking also into account that they, as a nation and a state, have different origins and system of acquiring citizenship (so-called "ius soli" rule, so by birth at the US territory) than in many other countries, being historically ethnically more homogenous. So it's obvious that in country having such origins and rules about citizenship like the US, there are people whose ancestors came there from all over the world, but they all became a part of one nation. So it's understandable that assuming, just by someone's ethnicity, that they cannot speak English or are not American can ideed be regarded as very rude. It all just shows ignorance of people and unfortunately, as You've mentioned above, flaws in education of many people (not only in the US) about the world, geography, history and different cultures. But actually it happens also in Asian countries as well. For instance, I watch sometimes the channel of an American KZbinr "Oriental Pearl", and she is so often called by various passersby (especially in China, but in other Asian countries probably it happens as well) "a Russian" - just because she is blond, while in half of Europe, in so many nations, there are people with blond hair as well. So something like this unfortunately may happen everywhere, to many people (of different races, nationalities or ethnicities). But it's definitely not pleasant. After all, each nation has it's own identity, history (sometimes also much difficult relations with other nations of a region), traditions and culture - so it's understandable that no one wants to be confused (intentionally or not) with other nations/ethnicities, being so much different. And as You wrote, especially at such an international event it's indeed really shameful for the organizers.

Don't care about the olympics stuff, but what I found interesting how "soft" they all were on NK when they were supposed to describe the country.
@everglades_n_co.3 ай бұрын
idk why people make a fuss about it. korea is already known across the globe thanks to its economy and firepower, not to mention its cultural influence. not many should confuse the sk flag with that of nk. one thing is suspicious though. i mean the motive behind it i suppose is korea won a bid in nuclear plant from czech and a bid in weaponry including tanks from poland. france is another powerhouse in nuclear plant, defense industry and europe is traditionally france's back yard for its exporting market. so, it's kind of reasonable doubt to think of its motive in that way. france could've been holding a grudge for its loss. but, like i said, misleading is no big deal, which was a silly mistake. btw, this olympics is definitely remembered as a total failure.

South Koreans getting upset is one thing, but it's a considerable embarrassment for the French Olympic organizers. Ordinary people, let alone the official names, can get the country's name wrong. But they are the Olympic organizers. No one expects them to make this rudimentary mistake. And it isn't the first mistake they made. Other countries are saying things that were done to them. It just shows a lack of professionalism and it's sad.

All communist states, those previously existing also (for instance in half of Europe, during the times of the Iron Curtain), were called like that in their communist constitutions, so the "People's Republics", and they had phrases in these constitutions about the "people's democracy" - which was in fact just one big lie, because there was no democracy at all. These is just communist, marxist phraseology, aimed at confusing and misleading about the real form of rules there.

Basically the entire episode showed the incompetence of the people organizing the Olympics. I know the Korean netizens were also annoyed with the blurry photos of the Korean delegation compared to other countries during the opening ceremony. Some of them even accused the French of being biased against Korea. However, the irony is the people who accused the French of biasness called them the 'China of Europe'. Why are they referencing China when China has nothing to do with this. Their comment actually proves their own biasness against China. How ironic. You accuse others of being biased against you and yet you yourselves are biased against other countries.

It was chaotic, in my opinion it was quite depressing, so definitely not like it should be, just totally inappropriate for such a ceremony, in many ways. Previous opening ceremonies, at earlier olympics, that I've watched were much better. And about confusing NK and SK - it was a mistake, but such ignorant mistake just shouldn't happen at such a formal occassion as the Olympics Opening Ceremony.

yes i always known dprk is for nk and rok is for sk and thats bec i do research by myself. when i search up nk or sk in Wikipedia, they always tell us the official name. since nk and sk r two different countries and divided for over 7 decades, they created their own name for their country. there r alot of diff between the two countries such as economy, politics, culture, environment, military, language is also bit diff. so rather than saying korea for everything, i think we should be specific and say north or south korea or dprk or rok. so rather than saying i love korea, u should say i love south korea. but no reason we just say korea for everything like i like korean food, i like Korean music even tho Nk food and music is diff to sk
