It's interresting to note that the Banshee don't typically attack anyone. It will usually appear to a person alone or at a family gathering and scream loudly to indicate that the person she screamed at OR one of her relatives will die very soon. It's more a bad omen than anything really so hey ! Don't blame the messenger amirite ?

It is "llorona", Spanish for "Crying/weeping woman", and it's a part of the culture of many Latin American countries, not just Mexico. Mexico, and Latin America as a whole are in the western Hemisphere, but when people talk about "the west", they generally mean a cultural concept rather than geographical, and it supposed to mean North America (USA, Canada, Not Mexico), Western Europe and even Australia/NZ.

I guess they mean more along the lines of ghosts from actual popular culture, both the Dullahan (headless horseman) and Banshee are two of the most popular creatures of Irish mythology alongside stuff like the Kelpie and Brownies and Bloody Mary has been a popular thing for years. The movies were based off the already existing popular ghost stories as opposed to the other way around

Spending a good chunk of my life on Army Bases in the States, Europe and South West Asia compounded the problem. Even now I share my apartment with a small redheaded Irish Girl who died sometime around the turn of the last century.The Building is over 120 years old. It's impossible to hold a well above Top Secret security clearance and tell your Sergeant Major the reason why you keep missing Morning PT formation is that evil an son of a bitch keeps coming in your room at three in the morning, shakes your bed and is so evil his mere presence scares the shit out of you and keeps you up all night. @@kikimo5558 No. My Grandmother, who was born in1890 BTW, would be awakened by three loud pounding knocks. These were not regular knocks but sounded like a mailed or armored fist pounding on a great oaken door. Something like the postern gate of a castle. They would emanate from all around her and not just from one direction. Those knocks would signal the death of someone in the family coming soon. I've always wondered if she heard her own knocks....

@Method12321 Thank you, Reverend. Every little bit helps. It's just me inhabiting the whole building at night and on the weekend. My family is grown and I live alone. I know how to get rid of them now. I didn't back then. Sage, Holy Water and Catholic Priests. I become violent if anyone even thinks of using a Ouija Board anywhere near me. Just say NO! That $20 plastic and pasteboard "Game" from Mattel or Hasbro will put you in a place you really don't want to be in and have to deal with things you really don't want to deal with. Thank God the two guys in the basement stay in the basement. :) I'm sure to those who never had to deal with a haunting we all sound crazy. Count your blessings that you can't see them. They wreck your sleep and your health. People may scoff but Roman Catholic Priests are trained to deal with the paranormal and holy water works. in the last two decades so many idiots have played with the Satanic and the Occult that the Church has had to basically open up an Exorcist Academy to train new priests how to deal with the Demonic. Now not all Ghosts are Demonic. Your Mother coming back to watch over you are your children isn't a demon. There is demonic sufficient enough for the day. You don't have to label everything paranormal as demonic. I've lived in places where I've had no problems and I've lived in places that were like Spook Central Station. I've only had to deal with two that were evil imo. Military Bases and Battlefields are some of the most haunted places on earth. Pretty much every post I've been on was haunted and I was at Gettysburg at night. That place is haunted as a Mo Fo. There were so many people/energies around me I felt like a tour guide.I talked to them and told them my name , rank and that I was retired from the Army of the United States. That seemed to calm them down since I was in the Union parts of the battle field by then. I could hear distant cannonade also. No Reenactors, No Thunderstorms that night. The Militaryghosts website is a good one to visit if you want to read about some of the things we have to put up with haunting wise. Jim Harold's website is another good one for people calling in and talking about their experiences. He also interviews people in the paranormal field. The last 90 days of his podcasts is free to listen to or download.

@tilted4fun805

Yeah, the story was written by Washington Irving and is considered one of the earliest examples of truly American fiction (because most fiction and literature in general at the time was from England). The legend says that during the Revolutionary War a Hessian soldier was decapitated via canon ball during battle and given a disgraceful burial (because Hessians were German mercenaries sent to kill us). As a result he rode through the night around Sleepy Hollow (a sleepy town just north of NYC) looking for his head and taking the heads of anyone who had the misfortune of encountering him in the night. You would be on your horse or buggy traveling and then hear another horse galloping in the distance only for it to get louder and louder.. til it was right behind you... then you’d hear him draw his blade. 💀 In some iterations of the story he’s also on fire because he came back from Hell.

BTW their name properly spelled is "BEAN SIDHE" in Irish but pronounced "Banshee". It's spelled Ban Sith in Scots (now you know where the Sith came from). The "Sidhe" being Elves and not what we think of as faries. Elves aren't very nice to humans at anytime. They like to steal human babies and children to raise as slaves and servants according to the folklore. In folklore the Bean Sidhe is associated with a particular family and will somehow presage the death of one of it's members.

It's interesting to see how the US changed banshees. Here, it's if you hear a banshee scream, you have to cover your ears because they'll scream loud enough to kill you. Headless horseman is a classic, we'd do projects with it as kids. The headless horseman took a jack o lantern to hide his missing head, and if you asked him where his head was, he'd try to take yours instead. If you were polite and didn't point it out though, you should be fine. Bloody Mary was based off of the queen Mary of England, because she killed many protestants. But then the nickname "bloody mary" was given a ghost story. Mary was a witch in the woods, and was very powerful. People hunted her down, even though she didn't do anything wrong and only helped people, and burned her at the stake. Last second, her soul left and hid in a mirror. She can only leave the mirror realm when summoned, by saying "bloody Mary" 3 times out loud. It's best to have the lights off and candles lit, because when the candles blow out, you'll know she's there. She then either takes you into the mirror realm or kills you trying.

Headless Horseman - The Headless Horseman is a mythical figure who has appeared in folklore around the world since the Middle Ages. The figure is traditionally depicted as a man upon horseback who is missing his head. Examples include the dullahan from Ireland and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," a short story written in 1820 by American Washington Irving. Blood Mary - Bloody Mary is a legend consisting of a ghost, phantom, or spirit conjured in a mirror when her name is chanted repeatedly. Most agree the name comes from the monkier Queen Mary the 1st of England earned during her reign for her prosecution of protestants. Banshee - a female spirit in Irish folklore who heralds the death of a family member, usually by wailing, shrieking, or keening. Her name is connected to the mythologically important tumuli or "mounds" that dot the Irish countryside, which are known as síde (singular síd) in Old Irish. Most, though not all, surnames associated with banshees have the Ó or Mc/Mac prefix - that is, surnames of Goidelic origin, indicating a family native to the Insular Celtic lands rather than those of the Norse, English, or Norman. Accounts reach as far back as 1380 to the publication of the Cathreim Thoirdhealbhaigh (Triumphs of Torlough) by Sean mac Craith. Mentions of banshees can also be found in Norman literature of that time.

TriXJester it's said that the the headless horseman actually originated in Irish folklore. A fae spirit called a dullahan(meaning "without a head""). The myth changes sometimes. It's usually man but sometimes female, and it's weapon is often a whip made from a human spine. While the banshee is a messenger of death, the dullahan is the bringer. If it's stops for you or calls your name from its served head it meant you're next to die

Bloody Mary is a dare game we used to play as kids. In a pitch black room (usually a bathroom) you try to summon Bloody Mary by chanting her name 3x while staring in a mirror. It's supposed to be Queen Mary I as that's her nickname. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloody_Mary_(folklore)

It'd be cool if yous would of given them more back stories on the ghosts. e.g. Banshee's come about when you find a comb on the street or if you're hanging about the banshee tree. They normally haunt those who has a traditional irish surname but doesn;t mean those who doesn't have one won't be haunted ... something like that with more insights

The headless horseman is actually based on an irish dark fairy called the dullahan and he's actually alot scarier than this.The banshee cries when you die and its him that comes for you in a carriage made of human skin and bones and the candles inside carriage are human fat.

We have a folklore in my country we call amaranhig.. it's not really a ghost but it's a corpse that mimics voices in the cornfields.. if the voice is loud.. it's far... Then if it's silent, it's right next to you.

You guys get into Halloween that's fascinating! It's such a Western holiday. Even my cousins in Barbados (an island in the West Indies) didn't do anything for Halloween until about a decade ago and that was mostly due to faster internet being more available on the island and the globalization the internet has. But it's so anthropologically fascinating to see such an Eastern country actually celebrate it! (Also Korean Succubus for what we normally call 'The Ring Girl' is a totally new thing for me I love knowing where that legend comes from. I did know the movie was originally Japanese I believe, the same with The Grudge. We just take all your good ideas for scary things and then tone them down because you're too scary for Americans! The original is sooooo scary!)

Headless Horseman: "His hair is like croissants" XD Yes it is. (I was born in 1988, 1999 is not old don't tell me things like that! TTATT) I actually live very close to Sleepy Hollow! It's a real town in the state of New York. It's not that scary. I went there to buy knitting supplies once, very nice people. It's one of my personal favorite ghost stories. Bloody Mary: Ah that is a classic, going back very, very far in folktale, I think even to medieval times. The story varies by location but the rule is always that you have to say her name 3 times in the bathroom mirror with the lights off and she will appear. It's just a story but I can guarantee you nobody has ever been brave enough to prove that. Not even me, lol. Banshee: Banshees aren't actually violent. They are ghosts of women who have been betrayed in life and now haunt a building or area and scream and cry really loudly at you. But they don't attack. It was also really fun learning about more Eastern folklore, I'm a folklorist myself so I love studying all the stories. Ghost Stories has...a funny history in America. So the people who were hired to be English voice actors for it in America were given a script that was illegible and none of them spoke Japanese. So they made up the dialogue and a lot of it was REALLY rude! But also funny! It's become kind of a classic for that. As for how they got so much of that to air, it was during a time when channels wanted to just turn out anime because that was the hot new thing and they would never actually watch the shows or read the new scripts so they never actually knew they were airing something so rude!

I don't really know a whole lot about the lore of Bloody Mary, but when I was in elementary school the story was that she was a young girl who fell sick and into a coma. Her parents held out hope that she was alive but were ultimately told she was probably dead, so they buried her in the backyard with a bell on a string tied to her wrist (if she woke up and moved, they'd know because they would hear the bell). Unfortunately, that night a huge storm came through their town and they weren't able to hear the bell ringing with all the noise. A few days later, the parents went to check on her, to see if her state had changed and they opened the casket to find her dead body with bloody fingernails. She had tried scratching her way out the entire night, thus the name Bloody Mary. Basically, if you turn out the lights in a bathroom and spin around while saying her name three times, she's supposed to show up in the mirror the third time. I don't know what the point of it is.
