Black Panther once topped the box office in Korea. Koreans think that Black Panther's main character should be Black. If Disney announces that it will replace the main character of Black Panther with an Asian Korean character, Koreans will not like the movie and will not think that the main character is appropriate. This is because Koreans think that the main character of Black Panther should be black, not asian korean,

Personally I completely agree with what one of the ladies said. When you go to the Disney movies you expect to see your childhood memories come to live. more so if it is your favorite childhood character. Lost of countries have their own princess, Merida (Scotland), Elsa and Anna (Norway), Belle (France), Rapunzel (Germany), Mulan (China), Tiana (US), Maribel (Colombia)., Ariel (Denmark), and so on. Changing the race for the main lead and even the story line will upset a lot of fans for sure. To see Ariel with dark skin tone (and the dry clay hair color) is as hard as seeing Tiana blonde or Mulan latin. Why just no create new princess or new characters instead?
@audreabrown8775

That argument doesn’t even work. Tiana and Mulan are characters that are both based in a specific area, time, and culture. How in the hell would that even make sense?
@nut4ku

@@audreabrown8775 Maybe this case is different. I know they tried to find the best singer, but choosing actress regardless of her appearance, just by her voice is actually kinda forced. Couldn't they used the second-best singer or anyone else? Because actually it doesnt need a very good singer to actually sings Part of Your World. What you need is to put intention and you had to feel and live the song as deeply as possible. Howard Ashman specifically asked for "Part of Your World" to be sung like a monologue, it's not meant for anyone else outside of the grotto to hear what Ariel was singing, the scene should be more intimate with a youthful wonder, more gentleness and love for the world on land, since the focus of the song is something she loves. You know that Howard Ashman was a great lyricist that he can even tell a story from a song. He made the song dynamically switching from singing to talking or even dancing and vice versa but the transition between them is still unnoticeable. But in the remake, Halle looks like she is always singing. Jodi Benson (original Ariel's voice actress) is really well and carefully directed by Howard Ashman, the legendary lyricist who made Disney rose from its downfall and started the renaissance era of Disney, who recently returned from his huge career in musical broadway world theater that time, that even her breaths, stress and pause on each syllable are really well and gently cared for. That's one thing that Halle didnt had. People say that Jodi sings the song as a character and Halle sings the song like she is in front of America's Got Talent's juries. Well i can agree with that. Maybe Rob Marshall choose her because she's good at belting and high note but that wasn’t the intent of the songwriters. Halle really make a new version for herself. She made a key change so it more sounds like a pop song. But Ashman specifically told Jodi that she had to sing like she was saying something intimate instead of belting it like she was in front of thousands of people, that's why all her big notes don't actually sound big and powerful but sweet and dramatic. While in Halle's version they did quite the opposite. Well everything doesn’t need to be the same since this is live action remake so I hope that there's some improvisations too but the live action actually have lots of imperfection in the beginning. But yeah both still works as "I Want" song actually (if we dont judge thoses by Howard's standards). I’ve made an complete analysis but I wont go deep into this song, you can ask me to send the analysis if you want. The director literally said Halle was the first to audition and was hired almost immediately. Probably there was no “we searched far and wide for the perfect Ariel”, they barely searched at all. Halle even claimed the roles for hers. Rumour has it that Beyoncé got her the role, there are better singers out there, Jackie Evancho and Lucy Thomas would make better Ariel. Lindsay Lohan in her ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Freaky Friday’ era would have made a great Ariel. She’s an actual ginger, and she used to sing too back then. Initially a big contender like Emma Stone who not only has a natural red hair but is also an excellent singer as she proved in La La Land. She’s also proven herself in Hollywood with her diverse project and even bagged an Oscar. So her playing in a big disney movie would have brought in a lot of revenue. Another big contender is like Chloe Grace Moretz who you might know from Carrie and she appeared to genuinely have been cast in early stages of the project, which just means she really would have been the perfect Little Mermaid. Karen Gillen, she’s the most known by Amy in Doctor Who and Guardian of the Galaxy but just because she’s busy with Marvel doesn’t mean she couldn’t have made room for big movie which would have expanded her portfolio quite a lot. Karen is also probably the most fan casted actress for ginger characters. So this could have been a dream come true for many as for her singing talents, Karen had her big moment on the ABC show “Selfie” where she sang Chandelier and shocked everyone with her angelic voice. No need to go far though, Ariana Grande (idk if Ariana is a bad choice, you can complain about this) imo is already fulfilled standard in terms of looks, acting and most importantly her voice. Even though looking for an actress for live action Mulan was much more difficult because you have to find a Chinese descent who can sing + act and is good at English, but in the end she was found. Director must be blind or something because there’s no way Halle looks remotely like Ariel. It looks like Rob Marshall was lied. Idk but maybe they didnt just see her potential at singing but also at baiting people upset because her skin is black. They just used Halle for marketing gimmick so that the world will be excited and they can cry racism to protect themselves from critics and blame it if their movie flop. You just saw that after this live action was released, Halle was criticized by many people but Disney didn't give protection to her, just let her face it alone, which is so unforgivable. Halle is good actually. But i don't think Ariel is a good choice because the consequences of blackwashing main character is bad. I want her career grow too but not by being employed by those capitalist in suits. Halle is very princess like and has such a beautiful voice she deserved to be in an original movie not a lackluster remake that will probably be forgotten in 10 years. Well after all, we live in modern era. Anything can be done, the same as the voice problem. It's the same case as Emma Watson. Why Disney doesn’t hire a singer to dubbing an actor/actress who cant sing? This used to be incredibly common and could be easily done. The autotune is brutal.

Even before Korea knew the existence of people of color, they preferred white skin as a symbol of wealth. White people are not described as white people, but as red people. Koreans don't like white people's weak, freckled skin. I like clear and clean skin without blemishes. IN OTHER WORDS! There is also a document from the Goryeo Dynasty that the preference for white skin in Korea is not caused by white supremacy, but because it is a symbol of wealth. In other words, white skin means that you have wealth to live on without going outside and farming or working, and this symbol has only continued to the present day.

Racism vs discrimination vs beauty standards and preferences. Royals in Asian series are usually fair in complexion because in Asia especially in ancient times the elites didn't have to work out in the sun and everywhere they went they had servants holding umbrellas for them and what not. If TLM live action had all black characters in it, people probably could accept it more. But with a mix of whites and blacks and Asians in a European setting mashed up as the Caribbean it's just too weird. A lesson for Americans that it's a big world out there, each country with its own characteristics and values and perceptions, etc.

First of all, as a Korean, Koreans don't discriminate against black movies at all. If Koreans were racist, movies like Black Panther would not be popular in Korea at all, right? However, Black Panther movies have been a huge hit in Korea, and I want you to know that Koreans are not racist based on this fact. Then I will tell you the reason why Koreans are angry because of the little mermaid. Do you admit that the previous Disney movies, such as The Lion King and Aladdin, were amazing in sync? It was a hit in Korea, too. We would have really cheered if we had cast an animation like Princess and Frog as black. Think about it. Wouldn't you be angry if a white Obama came out when you said you made a movie of President Obama? You understand what I mean? It's not racism, it's a character synchronization problem. And now the Little Mermaid has failed not only in Korea but also in other countries. I kind of disagree with the guy saying that Disney did this movie not for profit. All corporations listed (or wanting to get listed) in a stock exchange only care about profitability. Especially when the executives have share-based compensations. I am sure Disney didn't want to go through the process of finding an actual african fairytale/folklore to adapt just to cut cost and maximize profits (since the scene-by-scene adaptations had proven to be insanely profitable even with the lack of creativity). They forget that these local fairytales represent the culture of where they're from. If they're really trying to promote representation, they should've made an original story adapted from any african literature. Instead, they chose to prey on nostalgia and sensationalize casting a black actress in a story based on a Scandinavian fairytale. (The little mermaid literally has a statue in Copenhagen.) This was such a missed opportunity. Most of the world is not familiar with any African literature, so I had hoped Disney would have introduced it (at least the kid appropriate version) to a young generation like how it introduced me to Greek mythology from watching Hercules, 1001 Arabian Nights from Aladdin, and Grimm's fairytales from Snow White.

I agree they had the perfect opportunity to really bring forward a new story that could have even connected The Little Mermaid with a whole new story that gave real representation. As a Korean and a long-time Disney fan, I wanna write my opinion. As Korea is a homogeneous nation, our reactions to skin color are often related to 'UNFAMILIAR' rather than discrimination. This is not simply about which race is superior. For example, if an African American doesn't receive proper service at a beauty salon in Korea, this is not discrimination, but because we do not know better. That's why I think we need time and interaction. Returning to the Little Mermaid, Disney has been monetizing the young, curious, and lively image of Ariel for decades. However, as a way to solve the problem of discrimination in current American society, casting people who do not fit the characters they have created for decades and accusing those who can't accept this of being racist is an extremely malicious act. I think it's like the malicious behavior of bad politicians trying to divert attention by creating conflict between different groups of people rather than solving the problem. People with vested interests who have a sense of historical debt to African Americans allow a African American actress to play the role of ARIEL with red hair and say, "We're okay with that, but they don't like it! They're bad." It's like this. This is not an action to solve the problem, but to avoid their own mistakes by creating another conflict. If a 40-year-old Asian woman plays the role of 'Hannah Montana', should we all just shut up and accept it? I even know that there are so many young, pretty, and talented African-American actresses. Giving this role to Halle Bailey, who is in her mid-20s, can only be considered a move in anticipation of such conflict. They had to reflect on the past full of white princesses and create a new story without prejudice. This is why I'm passionate about the movie Soul. I believe that art, especially movies, should comfort people and make them happy, and should not be used as a tool by someone else.

I feel the same. If you really pay attention to what she does and says, she is just a self-entitled person saying she's doing this to represent the black community but actually it's all about her. Btw her brown orangey dreadlocks look awful. So the little mermaid is now black with horrible hair and looks nothing like Ariel. Why would I want to watch this movie when the original is so much better?

I don't agree that Koreans don't see the Little Mermaid for racist reasons. The following is the discussion on the overall racial issues surrounding Koreans by combining the opinions of not only me but also other friends. 1. Expressing diversity is good, but respect the original. - I remember enjoying watching "Moana". If Disney had created a new platform based on Zulu folk tales or ancient Ethiopian princesses and made a live-action film, instead of "The Little Mermaid," set in medieval Europe, why would we reject the film. Black Panther succeeded in Korea. 2. Koreans usually don't have much sense of debt to racism. We don't have a history of racial persecution of blacks. So Asians often find the racist discussion surrounding the Little Mermaid absurd. Rather, racism against Asians is used casually as a humor material. Something like Dick is small (sibal, that's not true). 2. Koreans have a strong nationalistic tendency. - This is the historical reason why there was not much interaction with other races. Perhaps that's why even today, expressions of different races cannot keep up with international trends. But this doesn't mean racism. For example, Koreans sometimes call it "heuk-hyung" to respect the physical and cultural superiority of blacks over other races as Slang. "Heuk" means black, and "Hyung" means brother. These words are sometimes used when you see black people who are incredibly good at basketball or black people who are good at singing. In countries like the United States, where interactions between different races are active, they're probably referred to as "friends" or "people" who are good at basketball or singing. It is true that further improvement is needed in the future. Also, a foreigner who visited Korea before (I remember him as a U.S. soldier in Korea, but maybe not) felt racist insults at the expression "Ni-ga" and had a physical fight with Koreans. Unfortunately, it was caused by a misunderstanding. This is because in Korean, Ni-ga means "you did" or "you are" instead of "nigga," a slang for black people. 'Ni' is 'you' and 'ga' is a linguistic part that connects the subject in front. As such, there is a misunderstanding or need to be improved in terms of expression, but I wanted to let you know that even Koreans' "thinking" is sometimes misrepresented to overseas interviewers due to racism.

It’s it just fascinating that what people have been saying for YEARS about race swapping Ariel being a bad idea now being proved correct? Forget the “scientific evidence” of what race mermaids are, or “according to the original book,” or whatever thing people say to justify why a black Ariel is a bad idea, when in reality, the simple reason is SHE DOES NOT LOOK LIKE ARIEL! It’s that simple and Korea and China are telling us that!!! And to those who say, “Ariel is a fictional character. She can be whatever race because she’s not real and mermaids aren’t real.” Well look where that mindset has gotten you. The biggest film consumers hate it! The most foreign money this movie has received is from the UK, another country who somewhat has the same idealism as the USA. But guess what, the rest of the world doesn’t agree, and Disney is losing big because of it. Basically, I bet somewhere the actor that plays Aladdin is laughing his head off because everyone bullied and harassed him when he said The Little Mermaid won’t make it to $1 billion.

"인어공주"의 인종차별 논란도 여기에서 기인한다고 생각한다. 나는 이러한 논란을 계기로 무조건적인 강요가 아니라 이해하고, 인정하는 시대가 되었으면 좋겠다. 이해하고, 인정하지 않는다면 모든 것은 차별이 될 수밖에 없다.

Just as the black actor in Black Panther deserves respect, so does the redheaded protagonist in The Little Mermaid. Ripping out only the black actors from Black Panther and adding Korean actors will not revive respect for Asians and human rights awareness, and no Korean who loves the original Black Panther will be happy about it. If we wanted to change the Little Mermaid's race and take on a truly new challenge, we had to have original characters and an original story that were much more complete and convincing than what we have now. But in 2023, The Little Mermaid is the exact same story as the animation from 30 years ago, only throwing out the ginger white Ariel and making a lazy movie that just changed her skin color. This movie, which is exactly the same as the story from 30 years ago, gives the feeling of kicking out the old protagonist from his home. Even if the main character of The Little Mermaid in 2023 had been a Korean actor instead of a black actor, he would have felt the same sense of deprivation. This feeling is expressed as 'Koreans are racist.' Is it right to say that?

I'm a Korean. I am neither racist nor lookist. However, I am a big fan of Ariel in the anime. I was fascinated by the red hair, the lovely face, and the pure song. And when I heard about Harley's casting, I was very disappointed. Is it a sin to want my favorite pretty character to appear in a live-action film? Everyone is missing something important. This movie is a live action movie. Live-action filming must be filmed in real life as in the animation. Red hair, white skin, and lovely looks. I should have seen Ariel's signature traits in this movie as well. It doesn't even try to match the anime, so this is destroying the original and deceiving the fans. People like me who became fans of her lovely looks were ignored. It's not a sin to like pretty things. It's not a sin to want that to be maintained in the new movie either. At least she should have had red hair. However, to wear reggae hair as a black identity is an act that really destroys Ariel's original character. The Little Mermaid is a children's fairy tale and does not exist for racial equality. There is nothing wrong with "white beauty" per se. What we have to do is to accept appearance and race as they are, not to say that ugly is pretty and race is unconditionally the opposite.

I know grown adults who weren't even thought of yet when society at large finally got sick of people crying racism when they don't get their way. I actually like the idea of a Mermaid who looks like the mermaid in the movie. That might have made a good film based on the real historical myths behind mermaids. But blackwashing the little mermaid for no other reason than to backwash it was probably not a very good choice. BTW. You should ckeckout Metatron's video about blackwashing Cleopatra when there were ACTUAL black female heroes who were successful against Rome that they could have made a film about in stead and probably even been more interesting. I have native American ancestry. If they made a film portraying Sherlock Holmes or George Washington as a native American, i'd be pissed. Well, unless they made it a novelty film with a clear stance that it's pure novelty. Had Disney taken that rout i don't think anyone would be complaining. That said, i am with the Koreans about the overall gloomy nature of the film. It's not just how aerial looks. In fact, that doesn't bother me personally at all. It's setting an entirely different tone. Again, not a bad idea overall, but not as a Little Mermaid entry.

"race is not the issue" but it is after all... Because everything is about the color of the actress who plays Ariel. Giving lame excuses as she doesn't fit the main characteristic of Ariel which is, let's remember, her voice and her curiosity for the human world and not her skin color. The one saying that it is her favorite Disney anime and that she read the tale, saying that the character is different while the two works she quoted are already differents from each others. It's 2023, and it's really heartbreaking that people are still talking about skin color whereas these are the same people who will say that they don't see colors(they're colorblind). A lot of people didn't watch it but gave bad reviews how sick they must be to do that. No wonder why the world is such a mess

It is all about race. These people can go around the bush all they want to because the other live action, Disney movies sucked especially Aladdin. Princess jasmine did not look like princess jasmine. I didn’t hear anything about anything else and all these other live action movies. Beauty and the beast was dark as well. Nobody mentioned nothing about that. They are being very kind in this video, but dark skin (Even though Halle isn't dark) is not considered pleasing in most Asian countries. That is why skin belching is a high demand market there. So, the fact that Halle was casted and Black woman, was a put off for most of them from the start. All this, *the film didn't look like the OG, and was too dark.* is just because Halle is Ariel. Even the one girl who actually saw the film liked it. So funny how the other's who haven't seen it have such strong opinions. As for Black Panther, it was set in Africa, so they expected to see black people. But not the Little mermaid. No way could she ever be black. With is funny because all of us non withe people grew up with her as a white princess and loved her! Ever though she didn't look like any of us. Yet we all can't love her now reimaged if she is black.

But Ariel was ALREADY an established character like all the OTHER princesses so why is it so hard for you to understand other ppls perspectives? There plenty of room for Diseny to make NEW story of a black mermaid. It’s not fair to OG Ariel fans. In the OG Mermaid story as you said her skin was LIGHT. Which means NOT black. How come all the other live action princesses stayed the same but Ariel couldnt? NO ONE knew Ariel would be black. We just knew a remake was coming before they announced the cast. Prior to that, we all would just assume Ariel would mirror the cartoon. So even if this doesn’t bother you, it’s not like you asked for it years ago. Again Ariel fans are allowed to want continuity in Ariel. It’s not wrong at all. They grew up with her and want to see it brought to life. Race swapping is a lazy way for black representation. I enjoyed the video. I'm sure there's no country in the world without a little 'racism'. Also, if you talk about the case of "racism," the United States is probably the first country in the world, right? Is the movie of a leading movie company in such a country ruined in Korea because of racism? It's just ridiculous ^^ It's a level where you can only laugh. I agree with many of the people you mentioned in the video, but... First of all, the synchronization between the original character and the actors is very important in the movie "Real Story." But The Little Mermaid just destroyed the original and wrote the main character in a different race. That's why I'm criticizing... It's not because it's black, but because the original character is white and red-haired mermaid, why does a black mermaid suddenly appear. The popularity of black Hollywood actors in Korea is as great as white actors. Simply put, the race of actors is not important in Korea. Isn't it natural that actors who act well and make good use of their characters are popular? For example, among Captain America in Marvel Comics, there were women, blacks, and whites. So it doesn't matter who does it, but it's the same reason that the Little Mermaid had to use white people. The movie is ruined because Koreans are racist? It's just a real damn thing. How many of KDRAMA and MOVIE's works are cast when they are based on webtoons (comics) Just looking at that, the answer is already out.

Truth be told I believe disney is a marketing genius for stirring up controversy so people will actually talk about them and also bandwagons to re-watch this movie just to not feel racist and support a black Ariel. Because some of their better original works weren't even getting as much recognition recently due to people are just getting tired of Disney. Also Disney purposely wasted a huge amount of their money on marketing the New little mermaid movie while some of their better original works got little to no marketing budget and only got noticed after being released on Disney plus. Disney just want to create some controversy just to remain noticed and relevant in today's movie market. Doesn't even matter if they don't make as much money in certain countries because they still making money domestically and in certain European countries due to politics anyway. But hey that's the truth evil anyway. Proving racism does exist but not because of China or Korean but Disney themselves at making Halle Bailey a new up and coming black actress a target of controversy fully aware the impact it will cause. Plus actually still refusing to add actual black cultural characters but just white washing a black actress to play a famous European folk character for clout. This is why they suck at representation of cultural accuracy from Pocahontas, Hercules, Mulan etc. And the closest thing to African was Tarzan or The Lion King.

The fact that the entire legacy of the live-action film is reduced to a debate over race when Halle Bailey very much embodies the spirit of Animated Ariel (and Disney's Little Mermaid made huge departures from the original fairy tale, anyway), very much makes the issue VERY MUCH RACIAL. It's RACIALLY DRIVEN. I've known the Bailey girls on screen ever since their KZbin singing days, and I LOVED them both. My only concern was Halle was so pure, so innocent, and her voice is so beautiful. But that was the whole point of the Ariel character. Nostalgia is powerful and loyalty to that character/image and our childhood is real. If they make that amount of little mermaid films don't you think people would be more okay with one of them being black when the rest is white? Miles it's the protagonist of his own history but in the spider universe he is just one of them 2 Spider-verse is an animation and Asian people like animation, even more than Western people 3 "We must make original black characters" and "retell a formerly white story as black to bring it representative" are 2 different things stop saying we should only have one thing or another! we need Spiderverse and we ALSO need the little mermaid 4 representation it's not about seeing yourself on scream, it's about showing what society thinks about one race. So you can identify yourself with characters that are from another race but you can't view a race as equal if you have never seen that race in that humanized position. Asian people have never seen a black Disney Princess so they don't associate blackness with Disney magic and all that bullshit that come along. There are many more black super heroes than black Disney Princess 5 Representation is not a cake recipe. It's not a one size fits all. Sometimes it's okay and sometimes it's not okay.
