Who cares? No one is gonna be recording/gigging with the 100% original preset. Turn up the reverb on the Kronos so that it's equal between both and we can properly judge the difference between the sound of the pianos, and not simply the fact that any keyboard with 0 reverb whatsoever sounds empty.
@metaspherz
@metaspherz 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly. I closed my eyes to be fair and I only noticed that one of the synths had more reverb while the other had more clarity, more purity of sound. Everybody knows that reverb adds depth which is fine for ambient music and a spacey vibe but in head-to-head comparisons you have to have a level playing field or else the results are too ambiguous. There are those that like wet and those that prefer the dry sound. I've been blown away by both synths and I'd be hard pressed to choose between them.

I like both, it all depends on what you want to end up doing. The Yamaha has reverb and you need to have both pianos dry to compare. But still... they sound awesome.

The difference in the two seems to be the speed of the release times of the amplitude and filter envelope generators. The Korg seems to close the filters a little faster than the Yam, which give the Yam a bit brighter tail as the notes fade.

They're both beautiful sounding workstations, I love how both of them sound, and I wouldn't be disappointed to play an acoustic piano patch on either for any type of gig. I own a Korg Kronos 2 and Yamaha Motif ES, and will never part with either. If you compare the 61-key versions, however, I think that most keyboardists would prefer the Korg's keybed over the Yamaha's. It's the best feeling keybed/action I've ever experienced on a 61-key keyboard.

I played both for several hours. I loved both keyboards. The Korg's sounds were amazing and the fact that they named their sounds based on songs/performers was thoughtful. The Yamaha's sounds were reminiscent of a 1989 DX7IIFD that had finally realized its potential with well-sampled sounds. I had intended upon buying a Korg GrandStage 88. My wife, a piano only player said the keys on the GrandStage felt like mush, so it got ruled out, though its sounds had me sold from KZbin. So, after we both played the Yamaha and the Korg all day - the Yamaha won us over with our opinion of the feel of the keyboard, to me, the feel of the sliders/knobs and especially the pitch and mod wheels. Yamaha feels like a Toyota, while Korg feels like a Mazda. Mazda is way more fun to drive than Toyota and has cooler newer tech. In 20 years, I'll still be driving that Toyota - while if I am the kind of person who needs new, new, new, I'll have already bought 2 or 3 (or more) new Mazdas. We're keeping the Montage 8 in our home. I'm gigging with - get ready - A Roland FA06 connected to a laptop with VSTs - so my live rig is under 20 pounds. Your opinion matters. My opinion matters. Go play both boards and don't just listen, use ALL your senses. How does the interface jive with your thinking? How does aftertouch engage? Does it make sense to you? Do the sliders and knobs seem too easy or too hard to move... or just right? When you engage the pitch bend, do you feel in control? At $4000, it is the single most expensive item in my home that isn't infrastructure. It must please you visually, sonically, and be the item where you feel easiest to express your creativity or blow off steam after a rough day. Do you feel that way with a Korg or a Yamaha - or a Nord or Roland - or even just a real acoustic piano. Play what makes you happy. Sounds can come from anywhere: Pianoteq has AMAZING pianos, that you can control from a $200 midi controller. But how does it FEEL? Only you know what makes your imagination go wild. Find it and bring the world your music. The keyboard is only the instrument. It is nothing if it can't express what's in your mind. Find the instrument that brings out the best in you.

I understand. Unfortunately Yamaha's preset has the reverb cranked way up on it, whereas the Korg's is drier. It would be helpful if the Yamaha's reverb was brought down a little bit. More of an apple to apples comparison.

I think I would have dialed in reverb to be as close as possible on both instruments. Most people commenting noticed the different processing on the two. Perahps this is due to "out of the box" sound, but both have a variety of pianos and effects to fiddle with, so I'm sure you could get them both to sound quite similar. The other problem is, what are you listening to this demo through? most laptop speakers aren't going to give you the same "atmosphere" as a good amp and speakers.

All of the guys who have not Yamaha montage are wrong about the reverb issue in this video tutorial. In fact the factory sound has minimal reverb maybe same as Kronos. The reverb effect in this video is caused by damper resonance. I have tried it with my montage. Whenever you make the reverb effect zero, when you press the damper pedal the string resonance gives reverb like sound. You can see this effect especially in Kawai acoustic pianos. Believe me. !! So Yamaha has distinct and high quality piano sounds. It is not matter how big t( tons of gigs) the samples are. The human ear can not differentiate the sound similarity after some thereshold level. Yamaha achieves the quality even with 400mb of samples. Don’t forget I had my akai sample only with 256 mg Ram and it was great also.

confidential303 The Kronos piano really does beat anything Yamaha has right now, (maybe not the new Montage, but I really haven't tried a Montage yet)... I play the CFX from the Montage every day and have to say it's my favourite by far. I even prefer this over the Bosendorfer and any of my Synthogy II Grand Pianos. Sure you can add reverb to any piano (and the Bosendorfer has a lot more reverb in the default settings) but it's the character and expressive tone that makes this one a standout. Sadly I even prefer this over my CO-256 :-(

Both sound really good, but they didn't test for long sustain. Korg has no looping in its piano samples, and Yamaha does, I think, so I would have liked to hear how Montage sounds in very long sustain situations. Sympathetic resonance on Kronos was excellent, though. I have a Kronos First generation that's upgraded, and I love the piano on it, but I am always interested in who makes the better one.

The Yamaha is a concert grand sound and the Korg is a studio grand. Not sure if the Kronos sound is actually one of the German grands which may not be a fair comparison as the Yamaha would be their CFX concert grand series pianos sampled whereas the Korg is a German grand of some description (probably Bechstein or Bluthner, very good pianos also). The thing that annoys me is that Yamaha plaster reverb over a lot of their sounds, but their DSP systems are brilliant! It's a matter of opinion which sounds better. In my opinion Korg but the Yamaha also does sound very good. Considering the Korg came out way before the Yamaha, I would say the Korg is lightyears ahead in the Piano department. The Montage is brilliant at the synths though, that said the Analogue stuff on the Korg is awesome too!

Robert Jerome you are right another thing that e need to mention is that Korg pianos for latest generations if you measure it's size sample size is way larger than any other competitive keyboard! And if used on the computer daw with any reverb and the right eq you can make it sound like the real deal! I think Korg beats Yamaha on pianos!

i Think this comparison is against towards the korg kronos, 1st, the kronos is not at the same height and you stretch before you play, second you seem to play with sustain pedal on the yamaha and not on the korg, and 3rd, there is reverb on the yamaha but doesnt seem much on the kronos and finally how did you select the pianos you used - is it the 1st to appear when you switch both or you went for same piano names eg steiberg or japanese grand or what? thanks anyway

Both sound great, different instruments, the Kronos is far deeper as it has 9 synth engines, the Montage has three. The Kronos offer great analogue emulations and are better for leads, but the Montage wins in the FM department as it offers a more developed FM synth engine. The Kronos offers far more features, but the Montage has sample library which is larger and are of better quality, but the Kronos makes up for that with its several forms for physical modeling techniques, such as piano string resonance, emulated Hammond organ engine, EP pickup emulations and also has a unique physical modeling engine which emulates the phenomenons of plucked instruments which can greatly improve harp sounds and guitar sounds. What the Montage lacks in features to the Kronos, it makes up for its intuitive programming and logical navigation's within the system, its far easier and far more inspiring to program ones own sounds and the montage also managed to make the FMX engine simple and inspiring to use, which is a first for FM synthesis in my opinion. I also think, but i am not sure if its the case, that the Montage offers a better FX engine, and i am Definitely sure that the Montage offer a better sound library. When talking of these synths, i prefer the montage because its easier to program and its more intuitive and complete as one instrument which sound better at what it does, the Kronos and its 9 synth engines makes it a monster, and it does sometimes feel like 9 instruments rather then one, but no instrument is deeper as workstations go, it offers all of these synth engines, SGX-1 Premium Piano (Acoustic Piano) , EP-1 MDS Electric Piano (Electric Piano), HD-1 High Definition Synthesizer(PCM), AL-1 Analog Synthesizer (Analog Modeling) EP-1 MDS Electric Piano (Electric Piano) , CX-3 Tonewheel Organ (Tonewheel Organ Modeling) , STR-1 Plucked Strings (Physical Modeling) , MOD-7 Waveshaping VPM Synthesizer (VPM Synthesis) , MS-20EX (CMT Analog Modeling) and PolysixEX (CMT Analog Modeling).

Louder will always sound "better" --- aside from that, we don't know which 'pianos' are being compared. There are dozens of pianos that come standard in both these keyboards, with a multitude of parameter adjustments. I'd give this one to the Kronos, hands down. Montage has 10 layers and 10 second looped samples, Kronos has 12 layers and unlooped samples.

Regarding pianos these instruments evolved to such state that it's really hard to distinguish the sound from real piano or to tell which is better or worse without being nitpicky (at least to my ears). I am sure piano pros will be able to point out some differencies and possible subtleties that I don't catch (sound wise, I know it's different to feel a real piano resonating under your hands) but to me this sounds like the real thing.

Lighthalzen-SS Let’s not forget it has the Epic Grand as well which is the best piano they have but you gotta buy it of the website from Yamahasynth.com and that’s it that’s all they have. CFX Premium Grand, Bosendorfer Imperial Grand 290, Full Concert Grand(Motif Series), and Epic Grand( K-Sounds) their best one by far.

Epic Grand grand sound good, it's a Yamaha C7, It is strange that yamaha does not use that piano, only in Genos… but for me the best C7 sampled it's PEARL Concert Grand from Impact Soundworks.

Listened to this a few times and to my ears the Montage sounds like a better instrument for a solo performing player. The Kronos to me sounds like it would be much better in a mix. Even with the FX turned off. The Yamaha seems to have a more rounded and bodily sound. Great for solo work but this would need to be tapered with EQ in a mix. Both are great instruments and really close.

I agree in that video the German Grand from the Kronos just didn't seem polished. But the Montage sounded recording studio ready and flowed very smooth. But there are many Kronos pianos. My favorite is Austrian Grand that's $200.. What makes the Kronos special is the 40gb of samples and Karma.

They both sound great but which one is easier to program? I am a Roland guy with a Fantom G and I must say the G is pretty damn easy to program and sound great.

Everyday, for about a month I was going to Guitar Center testing both of them before choosing one of them. Yamaha looses to Kronos like a bad habit in real life. When it comes to quality of the sound, Kurzweil Artis and Korg Kronos are the Top!!!!

Boesendorfer Imperial Piano Library for Montage is 440MB. KRONOS has 4GB piano samples for two pianos (the one is Boesendorfer, the other is YAMAHA). Decay time of Montage CFX piano is slightly shorter than KRONOS. KRONOS piano is richer and deeper than Montage. But Montage piano sounds clear among other instrument sounds.

Kronos has string resonance sample, Wow! I instantly like it more for this reason alone. Also, it has more real piano effects, you can hear the piano strings on the kronos. You can't here that on the montage. What other keyboards offer string resonance? Mind you, i play my real acoustic yamaha piano for 31 years now so i know a thing or two about pianos.

The best Montage/Modx piano is the Bosendorfer Imperial grand, witch is not stock. It must be downloaded from Yamaha library. It sounds deep and powerful!

This is the ONLY field in which I find Yamaha really better than Korg, a lot better! All the Korg piano sounds have a certain sterile and clinical character that I don't like at all.. I find that Yamaha is much more alive, organic, resonant, creamy, also in the way the notes blend together. I can't imagine to play a slow jazz ballad using a Korg sound. But Korg is constantly growing I think that soon they will come out with a really outstanding piano sound. For all the other sounds I prefer Korg or they are comparable

the only main difference I hear is reverb...makes the montage sound a lil more warm..but i still dont see how one is better than the other because you can achieve the very Sam results with some tweaking of each keyboard..it's a matter of preference at the end of the day..my opinion

They're both good enough for a workstation. If you find these lacking, go for a true stage piano or the real deal. Otherwise, it's all the other features that should lead one to choosing the right workstation.

The Yamaha's airy reverb effects processing was more pleasing to the ear. The Korg effects sounded dry by comparison. Which one sounds better? Yamaha. Which one has the better root piano sound/sample, before the chosen processing effects were applied? Who knows?

There are two kinds of digital piano players out there:the ones who always think "this guy's piano sounds better than mine", and the other ones who always thnk "mine sounds better".This comparison tells me that the Yamaha patch got reverb and the Korg patch got shorter attack and release times.It doesn't tell me anything about the sound quality if I'd play them in my rehearsal room or on stage.

Totally different piano samples. Both sounds good, Yamaha has more reverb had very musical middle range, Korg is dry but more natural in lowest notes. Two great synthesizers with their own philosopy.

colbalt95 Phil Clendennin (Bad Mister) with Yamaha and Steve barton (Yamaha UK) have already confirmed that the keybeds on the Montag 6's & 7's is the same FSX keybeds used on the Moitf XS & XF. From the yamahasynth website is this exchange from someone asking and Bad Mister replying... 5. Is the Keybed on Montage 6/7 similar to the Motif XS 6/7? (XS had pretty good keybed, never tried XF). The key bed for the Motif XS6/7, Motif XF6/7 and the Montage 6/7 are identical. The Yamaha FSX action. The 8 models are similarly, identical throughout. The Yamaha Balanced Hammer action.
