Thanks for this! After much deliberation, I ordered a Wavestate today. Watching other reviews alone I was worried it was a one trick pony, a sample machine, but your video proved to me it’s got loads of ability to take a basic wave source and you can endlessly model it! More than I need but with all the cool sample potential too! Love it!

Thank you, your explanations are fantastic. I got mine about a week ago, and it has been mysterious , as it is not laid out like a traditional synth, but now It makes more sense. the real mystery still is the sequencing. I don't understand why they didn't put a "play" button on it to turn on or off that feature, just for quick convenience . But I'm starting to read the manual on that section as I type this and hopefully it will make sense soon.

When you added that step 1 going into step 2 atmos sound and adjusted the step 1 to 2 loop rate slower I immediately got it and could imagine using the Wave State programming timed to develop sonically interesting shifting timbres with say an evolving visual animation. I had a Prophet VS and then a Korg Wavestation, both long gone, so this type of sound has a positive memory in my sound memory. Thank you Cuckoo for such a simple explanation of this new, perhaps complex synth and making it seem very accessible to anyone willing to dig in.

25:30 - Dreamy Reverb. Powerful tone here. 35:37 - one knob changes multiple targets - nice! That's why I favor the NordLead 3 (the only one they made with encoders instead of pots) over the others, it has that as well. 49:52 - Beautiful. This is why I prefer integrated synths over modular - It seems like it would have required $10K worth of modules and countless patch cables to replicate what you just did here in minutes, without any patch cables. Thank you so much for creating this incredibly informative video.

Must admit that Korg made the programming somewhat easier than the Wavestation. But then they added on so much more sonic possibilities that it's back to square one again. You could take weeks programming a complex patch (always did on the old one), but you can do so much more with this. I can see my self heading down to the studio and spending days in there programming this beast, come up for air and find the world has blown up or something. Modulation madness...I like.

I have to appreciate Korg and the launch of its products. I mean here they reveal a new synth and there is already a bunch of in depth reviews, tutorials, magazine articles and so on. Modal Electronics should learn from them. Argon8 up to this has only a couple of proper reviews and it has been like half a year by now. There are not enough ones for SKULPT even still and that has been out for a year or more. Korg just sends free synths to youtubers and that is why we can enjoy so many videos at launch and make a proper decison.

Many thanks for creating this. Trying to program custom sounds is quite the production, more menu steps than a lot of other synths, but at least here you patiently walk through them, showing how you got there, what the effects were and sounded like. However, if I'm doing a live performance or jam, it seems much easier to just use external pedals (which I often do) rather than having to wade though a labyrinth of menus and submenus to get at various effects options.

Glad to hear you found it helpful! Designing sounds is an art in itself. And the more complex the synthesiser, the more complex the process. I should make a followup and go into the white knobs, which can be really powerful and custom.

I'm glad companies are seeing there is a market for smaller digital rom bases synths. Just need a small 37 key kurzweil now :)

very enjoyable demo cuckoo, even though you only touched on the wavestation and vector synth topics, looking forward to that in the future. watching the vid, i still get the feeling that despite all the panel controls you're still relying a huge amount on screen and rotary encoder, still the "painting the hall through the letterbox" effect that plagued the original. perhaps a PC or tablet editor might help the situation.

This sound (mostly) reminds me lead sound of Vangelis - Hymne. Its very close to the original. Great tutorial True Cuckoo, of "how to play with" Wavestate - the best so far !!! We want more!

It blows my mind how many of these are already being resold. If anyone takes a little time to dig in they'll understand how much power is built into the Wavestate. If I could only own one synth, the Wavestate would be it. I'm planning on getting a Keystep Pro so I can sequence the four parts on discreet MIDI channels. What a machine! (BTW... Cool tutorial Bud.)

The Wavestate vs Modwave is tricky though. The Modwave is more of a "synth", that also plays samples. Wavestate is a much more samples oriented synth with a kinda unusual workflow. I think if people are selling the Wavestate perhaps it is to get a Modwave? What do you think their reasoning is?

@@truecuckoo I suppose it depends on one's objectives... Personally, I love the fact that I can create four separate poly synths within the same performance and vector through them. If I were to have to choose a single sound synth it'd be the Hydrosynth Explorer. Love your teaching style. Hoping to hear some stuff with your Super group collaboration.
