Upon rewatch, I'm kind of surprised that Korone wasn't the obvious #1 to the others. She's like top 3 in all of Hololive. It's one her main traits. Okayu is an SM honestly. She loves bullying too much to not be considered a sadist. Mio's sadism is honestly more just her being a typical mom. She doesn't enjoy it necessarily, she just thinks it's important to say, and she knows the most about the others. Subaru is not really sadistic at all.

It's pretty much as they describe here, Mio doesn't seem like the type at first glance and she usually isn't but, unintentionally or not, she can absolutely obliterate with her words. I think in this same stream when Subaru asked why Mio wouldn't want to date her, Mio straight up told her "you're a pain in the ass" lmao. The fact that she's unaware of it also means she doesn't play into it for comedy so it really only comes up naturally.

It's fascinating, watching this I realized that there's something of a cultural misconception about S vs M behavior in Japan. Everyone seems to be treating it as a sliding scale, where being 90% M means also being exactly 10% S, and so on. It shows in how Okayu stays consistently at the bottom of the chart, despite being a known tease. Okayu herself even says she's "disqualified" from being an S, seemingly because of how much of an M she is. (But then, she may also know something about herself that the fans simply don't. Many things, I'm sure) Confirming my initial suspicion is Korone at 2:30, giving her reason for Okayu being the bottom of the S list as "Okayu's definitely an M", and Subaru at 7:40 concluding that chat's 6% vote for her as an S means that chat sees her as an M, which doesn't logically follow. Dunno, maybe I'm the only one who cares, but I think it's fascinating to discover what appears to be a culture-wide misinterpretation of behavior, seemingly overlooking the fact that people can be both of these things, or neither of them, simultaneously.

A key thing to add, just like how you can be S M SM or neither, you can also be different sub types of any of the categories. Example Okayu is a classic brat masochist, she is mischievous, but the ultimate goal is for her target to turn on her and put her in her place. This works well with Korone who is highly susceptible to teasing but can also put extreme pressure out. Catto is smug but she knows doggo can break her physically or mentally, and she enjoys pushing that edge. And thus, why Korone is confident she will always be Okayu's number one, and visa versa.

I highly disagree. If you are "both", then there's no point categorizing yourself as S & M. You are something else. That's like saying you are good but also evil, or an introvert but also an extrovert. You can be one right now and the other next time but never at the same time. And saying Japan has a cultural misconception about S&M points out that you believe there can only be one definition. Who's to say that S&M has to adhere to what the west defines it? What if the idea of S&M is highly different among cultures and nationalities?

One is enjoying causing pain, and the other is enjoying experiencing pain. They're by no means mutually exclusive. Japan's definitions, though... It's tricky, because I think the terms are extended to a whole bunch of different (but similar) concepts all at once. You'll hear someone describe being M as enjoying nothing more intense than light teasing, and then someone else who describes wanting what seems to me to be borderline abusive treatment. Sometimes it's physical, sometimes emotional. There's a wide range of both type and degree of "M" behavior. I remember Marine being astounded that the video of her getting slapped in the face was received so poorly, when to her it seemed appealing (or thought it would be appealing to her chat, I forget which). So basically, there's a huge range of things people might want done to them, and people who would want to do those things to others. Those are your Ms and Ss. But again it doesn't seem at all weird to me that you might get people who fall into both spectrums at once. Or you might have someone like me who isn't really a fan of either. Now, if you're treating S and M as equivalent to Top and Bottom, with one person initiating things and the other being more....ugh the internet has ruined the word submissive, but that.... then I can see why you'd think they were locked to a sliding scale. Being willing to initiate in 6% of situations would naturally mean you're NOT willing in 94% of them. But I don't see that as the primary meaning when people talk about these concepts. In reality they're treated like....the spectrum of options that exist between Sadism/Masochism, and Top/Bottom. It's weird. So yeah, I stand by it. Much like every attempt humans have made to shove complex topics into neat little explanatory boxes, Japanese culture has at least a partial misunderstanding of this concept that makes them see it as a "one or the other" situation when it can also be Both or Neither. Limiting a three-dimensional grid of options to a single number line. Options get lost doing that.

IMO, because there aren't much S episode of Subaru, while Okayu stabbed her viewers with pen on ASMR stream, Mio tease Subaru pretty often, and Korone is Korone.
