I see what they were going with in Korra. She had to be distinctively different from Aang. Problem is, they went so far for polar opposites, they forgot to make her likeable.

I would be completely fine with all of it if, through her trials and tribulations, she actually had to own her flaws and mistakes and cultivate virtues to overcome them and the obstacles she faced. She kinda sorta does in season 4, but that just helped her overcome one of her many character defects.

There have been many powerful female character in movies and animation in the recent years. But so many of them fall flat for me. Toph was a powerful female character. Exactly!!! They aren't equipped to determine what toxic masculinity is, bc #1 they hav unrealistic standard for what non toxic manhood is, viewing everything from abuse to holding a door open as sexist, then when a man is emotional they think he's a wimp or gay. Which in my opinion is a brand of homophia, gays can be manly but not to these peopl. #2 When a girl shows toxic man traits like aggression she is strong, or when a girl is a tomboy she is lezbian (just search Princess Merida's sexuality or love life and you'll see what I mean). Or when a girl has vulnerability like Black Widow being disappointed about not being a mom (in her eyes a ticket out of being a killer) or Belle's kindness to the Beast is seen as weakness. The reason these stupid contradictions exist is bc they don't know wtf they are talking about. They hav double standards bc they are just lazy, lack imagination, and understand humanity that little.

I also don't like Su Yin. She isn't a mary su and sure she isn't that bad by the time she meets Korra she's okay, but the fact that she thinks so highly of her lifestyle and pretends to be sensible while giving low blows to her sister she presumably cares about. And I think she was supposed to appear like the enlightened, 'no one can control me', freedom encouraging good guy who isn't annoying like Lin, or something. Sad. I thought Korra with her attitude didn't need encouragement to be even more... like her. Also I don't like it that Genora went from a sweet heart to a know it all in season 3. Idk why it only took Kai talking shit for her to demand the rank of master.🙄🙄

Why Korra Makes No sense. She dosent follow the Avatar cycle. Aang was a Airbender but was VERY good at water bending because it is the next in the cycle and his hardest element is Earth due to It being the Opposite of Air and his personality. (His pacifism was the reason he struggled with Firebending but he was very good at it) Korra. Is good at all 3 elements. Only has trouble with Airbending, but even with her Nature and personality being different She should still be able to airbend even Aang could Earthbend a slight bit. Also Korra Overly uses Firebending and Acts like a Firebender yet Earthbending should be her most powerful Secondary Element. Yeah Korra was a Firebender retconned into a Waterbender.

My personal definition of a mary sue is a character where the world bends to accommodate them. Maybe it's as you said, to vindicate them even if they're wrong. But it also includes being defeated in the most graceful way possible. As if defeats are scripted in such a way that basically gives them an excuse to lose. "Oh they were ambushed.", "Oh, there were hostages." stuff like that. A lot of problems with Korra stem from this idea that the rules just don't apply to her. Neither the world nor do other characters exist with their own trials, tribulations, wants, and/or needs that are separate from hers, everything just seems to bend to make her look good despite the timeline of events clearly showing quite the opposite. That's why she's a mary sue.

The moment I started hating Korra was the moment she bursted through the wall as a toddler and said ‘I’M THE AVATAR, YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH IT!” Then started throwing around Earth, Water, and Fire like nothing. Making the majority of ATLA meaningless as why didn’t Aang just start throwing them around like her and just beat down the Fire Lord ? I get that it would’ve felt repetitive to go through them all over again. But you could also have different lessons based on ones personality to become more connected to the elements. Then Korra could’ve started out as a FIRE BENDER first instead of a Water bender, giving a larger time skip and allow more Air benders to be around and help with the jump of Cultures and technology from ATLA to Korra.

I keep seeing this but I know that Korra is the avatar and can master all 4 elements. But she doesn't act like a water bender. We know that waterbenders have a culture of strong family connections and they always are adaptable and can think on their feet and turn their opponent's weaknesses or strengths against them. Look at how Hamna created blood bending, Sokka coming up with the idea of destroying the drill from the inside, and Katara using her sweat to break out of that wooden prison. All waterbenders except Korra thinks like that. I mean her go to element to use is fire or earth. If you look at Aang, he's the avatar but he always always used air even when he wasn't fighting. That shows that the elements are embedded in their respective cultures and it affects benders and nonbenders alike. But with Korra they completely lost the plot.

Korra's behavior is questionable to me because they didn't show us how her parents brought her up. What I get is Korra having parents is just nothing because the ones she really needed the most are non-blood-related mentors (Tenzin, Lin, SuYin, Toph). I was like: why bother give her complete set of parents if they're barely used in the story anyway. Korra always dreamed about being the avatar so it's natural that she played with elements as soon as she discovered her abilities. 10 year training maybe was necessary but in a different way. Cocky, powerfull, self absorbed kid have to guard our safety - we're doomed if she stays this way. At her first visit in town she destroys... 3 shops and a road? I don't remember. And she's surprised that nobody thanks her for saving from thieves when repair bill will be high and maybe they will have to close for some time. It was great opportunity to see that she can't just do everything. People now don't need powerfull godlike avatar, coz they can take care of themselves. It would be way better for me if Amon stayed alive even at the very end, Korra didn't get back her powers before spirit world opening, maybe at all or even lose airbending aswell and become greatest avatar even without powers

Something I find puzzling about a lot of modern media is how their interpretation of "strong female character" is to give to a woman all the traits that makes an entitled alpha-male unbearable and call it empowerment. It's like all positive feminine traits must be removed and have a gender-bent testosteronic 80s action hero for a female character to be seen as "strong"... which I call bs. And in the Avatar universe, that's why Katara is a great character while Korra comes off as so unlikeable.

After Anng defeated Ozai and the world entered an era of peace, Korra would be treated as a live nuclear weapon. Because she would be the most powerful bender in the fucking world. But we never felt that threat from her like we did from Anng when he went to Avatar mode. It would be far more fitting if she was a mascot, doing shows and shits like a celebrity. Only using her bending for shows and stuff. It could be a story about her finding her own motive and a story about a world that doesn't want the protection of Avatar anymore.

11:55 This is the same petty shit the writers were doing with Star Wars. We went through the entire Avatar series (in the case of star wars the original and even the prequel trilogy) without complaining about strong women, THEN now that they hav shitty characters written badly and with terrible attitudes for obvious reasons, they want to hide behind gender, for no reason other than their own stupid, narcissistic, disconnected from reality, Caladonia bubble ideology that is stupid to the rest of the country bc these specific people are unequipt to understand normal. Bit they would rather blame us then wake up and see that, no Twitter is not reality, it's an echo chamber of stupidity.

When she was bending the elements as a toddler, she was showing the basics. She still needed time to master them. Even Aang didn't master all the elements by the end of the show. He just learned enough to help end the war.

She had all 3 elements gain without explanations( expect water maybe ). In past avatar years they have to understand the characteristics, art, and richness of the elements by going to it's source. Aang had gone through the process of it's properties rather then a power tool(same with past avatars). It's just unrealistic that a toddler had a quick understanding how to use fire ( opposite of her culture) , earth ( no where to be seen in the environment ) water( perhaps since it's inherently around her culture but looking back it's odd that she's a toddler who suddenly obtained it but parents aren't shown to inherited.) I can see why ppl called her Mary sue since she was brought up as "chosen archetype" with demonstration of basic material arts with elements as a toddler without any training before lotus shown up to confirm she was the avatar. I don't hate Korra but it really feels she doesn't fit as an avatar imo

Korra and Toph are both jerks, but people in the setting realize Toph is the way she is and that's a problem. Korra gets a handwave like her being a jerk is a good thing. The setting for me broke when in Book 2 Korra goes up to the President guy, and demands he start a war because she demands it in public. And we're supposed to side with her over that. She's not really a character, she doesn't change. She is our point of view, and is super powerful and forgiven by all because this is required to enable our POV to travel around.

I still think Mako is a huge wasted potential and treated like a joke, just like Bo lin. They reduced the brothers as the sidekicks to the Avatar. Honestly, Mako and Bolin have more interesting backstory than Korra and that's okay. Korra is the main character because she's the Avatar and she needs to learn humility and wisdom. Ok cool. So the only side characters who were treated as actual characters are not Korra's "friends" but her mentors: Tenzin and Lin Beifong.

@@rakantopinibl5736 IKR? Even Mako's dead parents are way more interesting than that cursed love triangle-square they gave us. The episode in S3 where they went to Earth Kingdom and the brothers finally met their father's side of the family is such a tease. It's revealed that their relatives didn't even know that their parents were dead and just heard Mako and Bolin's names as pro-benders. Just sad. My head canon is that their parents came from opposite sides. Their father was poor and used to love with his huge family in the Earth Kingdom. Their mother have rich but strict parents in the Fire Nation who limits her freedom. The two of them left their families and fled to Republic City to start new lives then they met, married and had two boys.

She was soooooo cocky with her abilities! she always considered herself better than others in the since of being the avatar and she could do what she wanted when she could. also she lashes out when she doesn't get her way!! She needed to be more understanding of where her power came from. i don't think she really understood her worth as the avatar, the spiritual meaning. She used it as an opportunity to flaunt it around then go into the avatar state when she needed an extra boost. In Aangs story he had more understand with his power I feel. he really was able to understand his power and open the different chakras in the process I don't really think we get much of that from Korra.

One thing I hated was, we haven't really gotten to see a Water Nation Avatar in action. Sure we saw a Water Nation Avatar, but he was just a fuck up. It would have been nice to see an Avatar thru that lens, rather than another Earth Or Fire nation Avatar in a Water Nation skin. Beceause that's what Korra's personality is, she embodies all of the worst traits associated with Earth & FIre Benders with very few of their virtues.

2:05 Okay, sorry. but that's BS. Being able to use a bending discipline doesn't automatically make one a master of it. Ask Katara in the entire Book 1 of ATLA. Aang was shown being able to Fire bend in Season 1, but that didn't mean he mastered it. The training cycle is a guideline for the reasons Jeong Jeong explained, but that doesn't mean the Avatar can't use bending disciplines he hasn't mastered yet, at all. Similarly Korra being able to use Fire and Earth as a child doesn't mean she has already mastered them. You yourself said it: Korra is stubborn and hotheaded which (according to ATLA) are ideal traits (in terms of bending ability) for Earth and Fire benders respectively, so it's not at all far fetched for her to discover her ability to use both at a young age. She still had go through training to learn how to properly utilise them, which is why the 10-year timeskip ends on her Fire bending test. It's a clear statement that she went through the training cycle. So no, there's no retconing the retcon here. 2:18 Yeah, no Aang got extremely lucky against Ozai. Ozai was utterly dominating their fight, until Aang's chakra got unblocked by a deus ex machina and he entered the Avatar state, that I might add, he had no controll over, up until the moment he refused to kill Ozai. The entire time until then, Aang was struggleng to keep up, so it was clear that his level of training was not nearly sufficient to take on a Master who spent decades training himself. So no, it absolutely makes sense that Korra despite discovering her abilities early would also need at least 10 years to master them. And BTW, his intructors -including even Katara- all agreed that she sucked at the spiritual aspects of bending, and the only reason they agreed to let her start training with Tenzin was that they believed he's the only one who can actually teach that to her. 16:46 That really doesn't make sense. Korra is literally a different person from Aang, just like how Roku and Kyoshi were different people from Aang. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of issues with this series, and with Korra herself, I even generally agree with your other points, but as a whole this video honestly feels like you were trying to ape Mike Stocklasa from R*tarded Lard Media, and his poorly researched, garbage-tier arguments about the Star Wars prequels, rather than giving a genuine criticism. Which propably was the goal, I just don't really understand why would anyone want to ape that idiot.

14:15 On the topic of mary sues I would say a mary sue can be defeated in a fight as long as their performance in the fight breaks reality/the rules set up in the story, if there was some earth kingdom farmer who can't bend and hasn't gone through any military training who fought the fire lord and had a close loss that character would be a mary sue. (Please note I am not calling Korra a mary sue as I haven't watched the show and thus can't pass any judgement)

Well, I didn't get pass the first episodes of season 2, glad I didn't. Other issue I would point out with Korra, and it's really more of a personal view, was her lack of feminity. I don't mean she's like a tomboy, because tomboyish girls still have that girlish vibe which makes it cute, like Toph. Korra doesn't have that. Why make a character a woman when you could gender bend it and it would be the same character? It's just like the one in the new star wars trilogy, I even forgot her name already 🤣

Dude, Korra fits every definition of a Sue. As you said yourself, she starts right off with everything just being handed to her. As a toddler she's already mastered 3 of the 4 elements, which is why the "training" she gets later is redundant and kind of pointless. The Sue is always the best at everything, and they are always right about everything. Another major aspect of a Sue is that everyone loves the Sue, and if they don't they're either wrong, or evil, or both, and yet even the bad guys have a respect for the Sue. And it doesn't matter that she gets beaten. The OG Mary Sue literally died, but everyone cried because they all loved her. And while people who like Korra will cry about my soggy knees, the Sue does not have to be a woman. The Sue can be a Marty rather than a Mary. Just look at Wesley Crusher, especially early on in TNG. Classic example.

She was the worst part of the show. Bullshit levels of talent, then she gets easily bested. She steals another woman's fiancee and then enters a BS relationship with her for progressive points. She also destroys the well crafted lore by making the Avatar state worthless. This story even ruined spirits. I would have rather had a show based on Kiyoshi or another past Avatar because every scene Korra was in was ruined by her bitchy lack of depth or character. The show would have been much better with a different Avatar, and without that awful intro you reminded me of. Strong characters can be great. Just give them believable flaws and don't make them the worst part of the show.

Yeah, it takes her 4 seasons for her to mature into a tolerable person. If it takes 3 full seasons just to show basic human compassion, then she is not a good character. Maybe it would be fine if she was a villain; Zuko was a villain so it made sense for him to take a while to become a truly good person. But Korra is the main character and she barely suffers any real consequences for her actions. In seasons 1 & 2, she’s nothing short of a bully. She forces herself onto Mako, casually trying to seduce him into cheating while he’s in a serious relationship. And when they finally are together in Book 2, she storms into his office, publicly accuses him of not being supportive of her, flips over his desk, embarrasses him in front of his co-workers, and then has the gall to be shocked when Mako breaks up with her because he doesn’t want to put up with her anymore. Can you imagine if the genders were reversed? Even by the standards of a brash, hot headed hero, Korra is downright despicable. And seasons 1 & 2 never displayed them as “flaws.” They were quirks that were used to create comedy and surface level tension/ drama that ran in the background of the larger story. Granted, seasons 3 & 4 improved her character development IMMENSELY. They decided to give her much bigger consequences for her actions, such as having to overcome PTSD. And she finally starts to act more compassionate in her everyday life, like with the new air benders. . Granted, I think after 2 full seasons, people already settled into disliking Korra’s character. And I can see this as being too little too late. But damn it, at least she improved in the end.

@@PilgrimsPass I learn from everyone. Thanks for appreciating that! It's perspective that I come for! You're not wrong - I understand where it's coming from - a really literal stance. I like it - because it's finally an independent female character that's stronger than all the others around her - she's the best - so that's what justifies her trivializing of others and going above everyone - because she pulls the entire nation's weight. I feel there's too much pressure in society to have to be a nice person if you have have great skills. This show showed that strong personalities are what brought her to her heights and that people should see that - being really obvious - and get out of the way - otherwise they succumb to her personality through their own weakness. Then she looks down upon that and takes advantage - and that's what brought her to the top. It's others that're taking advantage of her that makes her look bad. That said, some of these are bad - they just lack context :) Thanks for letting me say all this - I feel it was needed to be a part 2 afterthought. - 1 of the 5 females in the audience
