I agree, I thought Katara was a bit of a hypocrite with her bossy attitude but that was it myself as well. Beyond that she was a very strong character who was very important and fun in her own right and really grew into a resilient young woman. Korra was irredeemably awful. Just a chore to deal with for everyone on screen and the source of about 90% of all the negative character conflict. Which is not okay for your main character to basically be an emotional bully from start to finish.

@@CrazeyHaze That's not true. Ozai was a one-dimensional Disney villain motivated only by power but the stakes were still high since his victory would mean the world would get f*cked up beyond repair.

First, instead of just showing us Ozai right out of the gate, the show let his character simmer, and it built fear and tension over all three volumes. Most of his development was alluded to (and sometimes bluntly voiced) from commentary of past memories from his immediate family. The depths of his cruelty were literally on Zuko's face for the entire series. His narcissism and superiority-complex were demonstrated through Azula's behavior and entitlement. Even the Firelord's superior Firebending was visually exemplified by look of doubt expressed by Iroh when he mentions that he wasn't even sure that he could defeat Ozai, and of course, we saw throughout the entire series just how much of a powerhouse Iroh was. But yes, more power was Ozai's goal, but the path he took to get there was calculated, very complex, and not 100% guaranteed. AND even if Ozai wasn't a deep character (and he was), an interesting villain doesn't always need layers. The villain just needs to be almost unbeatable, so that there is possibility that our hero might fail; when the hero succeeds, it makes it satisfying. Heck, because Ozai's craving for power was so insatiable, it made him losing his bending (instead of death, which would have been good, but not as good) all the more enjoyable. Non-bender. A fate worse than death, at least for Ozai.

This is South Asia, but the Islamic conquest of India was probably the deadliest genocide in human history. The Mongols were conquerors and mass murderers par excellence. There are the empires of Southeastern Asia, like that of the Khmer. A Tibetan empire lasted from the seventh century to the ninth and gave the Tang Dynasty a persistent headache before imploding. China has been an imperial power ruled by different dynasties for the past two millennia and the CCP hasn’t changed that. Aaron Ehasz not working on Legend of Korra makes Legend of Korra none-canon in my opinion because he worked on Dragon Prince, and that series felt more like Avatar the Last Airbender than Korra itself.

I completely agree. I genuinely really like LoK- 20's inspired fantasy Asia is a setting I never thought I'd see, especially in media geared towards kids; the characters have a _lot_ of unexplored potential; it's fun seeing how much has changed since Aang's time, as well as seeing the heroes' legacies; etc. All tarnished by its canonicity. LoK makes a great "What-if" series, a brilliant writing prompt, and works great as a stand-alone series, but when viewed in the broad lens of the entire series and world, it actively detracts from the pre-established world of Avatar (especially when you bring in the LoK comics. Those were just bad no matter how you look at it, and spent 90% of the time trying to justify Korra and Asami ending up together. Like, I honestly didn't even care that much, the romance in Korra was always pretty bad, but then you just wasted my time shoving the same damn point down our throats for three full books.) I just finished the comics, so that last point's pretty fresh, so please excuse the ranty-ness of it, lol. Honestly, the comics of even Avatar are pretty bad, at least compared to the original show, but the LoK comics were just... sheesh.

Hating is a strong word. One of the good aspects of ATLA is that the main characters all have flaws. Katara is very bossy because she had to take care of her people at her tribe, and that aspect can become annoying sometimes. They even had a whole episode about her nature clashing with Toph on how to train Aang.

I guess I always considered the races on Avatar: the last Airbender to be ambiguous. Of course, each culture was inspired by a real world culture, but the actual characters in the nations (minus a few characters) looked like a mix of soooo many different races.

Speaking for Sokka, there's also the fact that his humor is, you know, relatable and understandable- Sokka is a cynic and an intellectual. He _is_ actually one of the smartest characters in Avatar, at least among the main troupe. But this also tends to make him somewhat jaded and a little snobbish, at times. So when he makes jokes, or does something funny, it's the sarcastic, biting kind of joke, or the humor is directed at him getting his karmic comeuppance. There's thought put into his status as being the comic relief. Bo Lin, meanwhile, is just "good-natured goofball who over-reacts to everything because laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawl funny." He comes across more as padding and trying to fill space, and any time he attempts humor, it feels like it comes across as the writers going "please laugh, now."

Ba Sing Se had aspects of Korea, and you can argue that the swamp benders might be Vietnamese or Laotian. So there's a mix. Also: Tenzin taking a beating to save his family was probably the best defining moment for his character.

I don't know, Swamp benders definitely seem to be based on Caijun /people from Mississippi and Louisiana. Even their music is based on Bayou folksong. They also have southern accents.

The fact that a dictatorship took power, with a policy of economic redistributism, paralleled the rise of the Chinese Communist Party if you ask me.

I think his role as a major supporting character allowed for the writers to present only their best ideas for his arch, even during the show's lowest points, where other characters with a stronger focus had a mixed bag of plot points to work with. The strongest points of the show really had some extraordinary high points for all of the characters involved: with Tenzin's fight against the Red Lotus being especially powerful.

When Legend of Korra first came out, I refused to watch it. I didn't want to accept the fact that the old gang was either old and dead and how much things have changed. Last week I decided to watch it, finishing the series in 3 days. When it ended, it left a larger hole than the original Avatar did.

I cannot fathom how the SJWs mind process Katara. I am sure most people would agree that Katara is like the annoying nagging mother figure of the team. Some of us may find her annoying at times but we cannot bring ourselves to hate her. Katara's personality was also shaped by the fact that she and Sokka lost their mother at young age. Plus the Great War required these two to fend for themselves. I think Katara is an amazing character because her personality shaped throughout the show in a reasonable / realistic way. Aang and friends are essentially a bunch of kids who are forced to grow up in a very short span of time thanks to the events and lousy parents. Especially you Mark Hamill, kappa.

@@qiralyncassette neither is domination. its one thing to integrate peoples into another culture its another entirely to dominate a culture and wipe it out with your own culture. the four nations each offered something different culturally to the world of avatar and when one got wiped out like the air nomads which offered alot spiritually to the world of avatar it threw the world out of balance. thankfully aang survived and managed to keep air nomad culture alive through Tenzin because if he just let his culture die by becoming integrated with republic city instead of letting it survive by separating it on air nomad island then koras journey would have been much harder if not impossible to overcome due to her journey being centered around a conflict with the spiritual world rather than the mortal world like most avatars. dont get me wrong this is not meant to be a commentary on the real world as in the real world their are some very archaic cultures that should be wiped out or changed. and even in the avatar world their are some cultural aspects of the four nations that should be changed and do get changed like the fire nations feelings of superiority or the earth kingdoms classism. but for the most part each nation offers something to the world of avatar that is good and needed and alot of that is lost in republic city. for example republic city is alot more like the fire nation and air nomads cultures than the water tribe or earth kingdoms cultures indicating that fire nation culture and air nomad culture in republic city has become dominant despite being an earth kingdom city primarily inhabited by people from the earth kingdom which ironically is what the fire nation wanted to accomplish during the hundred year war in the first place albeit without the air nomad influence. and this makes sense considering zuko and aang were the ones credited with being the founders of republic city. some cultural aspects of the other nations do remain in republic city but for the most part republic city culture is a mixture of the industrial and innovative fire nation cultures and the free and open air nomad peoples. theirs almost no waters tribe culture left in republic city and as far as the earth kingdom goes all that remains are things of an aesthetic nature like fashion or architecture. oh and even though republic city is primarily a mixture of air and fire nation cultures it is mostly fire nation. with the exception of the air nomads culture of freedom almost nothing remains in terms of their cultural attitudes relating to nature or the spirit world outside of air temple island which is why its a good thing they separated the air nomads from the rest of republic city so that their culture would not disappear into republic citys culture.

I disagree with your analysis of ATLA message of anti-diversity, were it seems based on the avatar’s nature and Iroh’s observances, that the show has a ‘we should learn from each other’ and a message of cultural peace between nations, that while different aren’t so different they can’t get along. While not a radical view on cultural diversity, it was far from a ‘separate but equal’ segregationist message. The show demonstrated the importance of tolerance as well as many other incredibly important lessons such as humility and perseverance.

I don’t think that was what he was saying in earnest, I think he was being overly dramatic. The show isn’t anti white and how anyone could come to that conclusion is ridiculous. It can’t be anti white because only Asian people exist, so every other race would have to go too. It’s supposed to be Asian. And that’s fine. There’s four distinct nations, they all look vaguely to very different from the other nations and all wear only the color of their nation. Obviously this is just a stylistic choice and to make it easier for little kids to tell the difference between the nations. However if you boiled down the message in to the most basic and oblivious thing you could, the message would *more* go along with ‘don’t mix’ than anti white. We know that isn’t the message because the most powerful benders learn from other nations, Aang and katara being together isn’t seen as bad, on and on. However that still makes more sense than “the world would be so much better without white people” because it would have to be “the world would be a lot better if only Asians existed” and that’s…concerning. Korra was a forced shallow character. She had everything handed to her including having a family, and yet very little in terms of personal ambition to develop on. She seemed to get more hostile with each season, and remained generally unlikeable in personality and activity abusing her power until the last season which by then made it too late to start liking her. I was satisfied seeing her get traumatized, and by the end was just glad it was finally over. And again, I was not surprised she turned into a lesbian. I called it from the start. Aang lost everything flung into a world he no longer recognized being the last of his culture. He endured a lot of hardship to gain all the power and wisdom he would need to restore balance to the world again. He earned his support. Would’ve been nice if his story went on just a little longer. That’s a real achievement unlike Korra with a limited and unremarkable cast

I have GENUINELY read at least 20 "Tumblr fanfictions" that had a better grasp on the characters and what makes them so compelling. I myself often refer to bad writing as "fanfiction versions" of actual good things, but when I actually look at it 90% of fan fiction, written by untrained 13-year-olds with no real-life experience, is far more complex and adept at characterization than the writers of (most) kids shows nowadays.

@@allfather608 actually, the old world was ok. The Legend of Korra's world building started to have real world stuff bleeding into it. In the comics, there were even representations of ethnicities in the real world, the authors even confirmed they put those representations there. Whereas, the original series' people, culture and clothes were only inspired. The author didn't much care for that and instead threw all the representation she could find into the comic. The animated series of Korra was still alright but the comic series was kinda...questionably weird.

Korras arc started in season 3, when she lost all interest in being the avatar. Season 1 and 2 of Anng was him running away from being the avatar.. But when he almost died, he took the job seriously.. But korra season 1 and 2 was her running head first trying to be the avatar.. She was a hot head, but when she was poisoned in season 3, she was knocked down so hard that she didn't see herself as a useful thing anymore.. It was only till she fought her fears.. that's when she was able to become the avatar that she was meant to be. Remember all this events happened to her in just a year.. 4 villians that wanted to change the world irrespective of it being bad or good.

For me "The Last Airbender" is the better choice because if I remember correctly this happens 100 yrs before Korra was even thought of before new civilizations and mixture of benders were at peace. This however, for me thinks that Korra didn't have much as a story or developed well as a character as for Aang his development was good since back then he and his friend were at war to defeat the Fire Lord. In my opinion I prefer the original.

What cements my hatred for Korra, as a character, was when she came out to her parents. Both her parents were happy for her but then her father had warned her about the realities of the world. That not everyone was going to accept her so maybe she shouldn't shout it out to the whole damn tribe. Instead of thanking him for the warning but saying she would be fine, she immediately thought he was narrow minded. It's like she was Ironheart and was jumping at the chance to be offended so she prove them wrong.

I recently binge watched all of the series on BluRay (I don't have Netflix, and didn't even realize it was on Netflix), and have been watching the behind the scenes bonus content and listening to the commentaries now that I finished watching it again (watched the whole series in a span of about 72 hours). I mentioned that I was watching it to my 10-year-old nephew, and his eyes lit up, saying how he loves Avatar. He then asked me if I've seen "the girl one." I asked if he meant The Legend of Korra, and he said that's the one, and I told him I hadn't. He sighs a relief and says, "Oh good! Don't watch it; it's terrible!" I laughed pretty hard! Also, the commentaries and whatnot so far basically say the whole show is based on 4 styles of Kung Fu, and they chose Kung Fu, because they practice it for real, always loved old Kung Fu movies, and so they wanted to make a show that was grounded in reality (they really drive the "grounded in reality/realism" home), but with a magical fantasy element, of course. The creators aren't even Asian/Oriental as far as I can tell, but that doesn't matter, because they love the culture around Chinese martial arts. Race doesn't even come up as a talking point for them, as it doesn't matter. They weren't even trying to push feminism or anything, either, they just wanted interesting characters relatable to the audience, and with depth/conflict. Boys and girls bicker over which gender is better all the time, and that juvenile tribalism is very relatable to children, so it's in the show. Even characters like the water bending master who seems bigoted and sexist actually isn't, he's just bitter that the love of his life rejected his marriage proposal, and he's man enough to recognize he was wrongly taking it out on the women of the tribe. He then agrees to teach her and Aang water bending. If anything, that teaches kids that someone who's mean may not even have a problem with you, but rather have a deeper pain from their past, and if given the chance for closure and/or reconciliation, may actually be a really good person. I had a bully like that in school when I was a kid. He used to beat me up every day after school, then my dad taught me to fight. I broke the bully's nose next time he attacked me, and he left me alone after that (sorry, Aang; violence CAN solve problems). Later, in high school, I got paired up with him for an assignment. It was tense at first, but then he apologized to me about how he used to treat me. He explained his dad used to beat him, and he was jealous of me having a dad who cherishes me. I told him the broken nose I gave him made us square a long time ago, and that I forgive him. We didn't become friends, but we had a healthy mutual respect after that. I'd love to claim Avatar played a part in that, but I didn't see it until AFTER seeing the live action movie well into adulthood. When I told my friend I thought the movie was great, he sat my ass down when we got home and insisted I watch the series, as I needed to understand why every copy of that movie aught to be burned, lol! Gotta say, after seeing the series, yeah, that movie was hot garbage.

A correction. The Fire Nation is inspired from China as well as Earth Kingdom. Earth is Qing Dynasty where Fire Nation is closer to Han Dynasty as well as architecture and outfits based on Thai and Polynesian Islands. The only Japanese reference is Kyoshi Island.

The Fire Nation is an island nation with a strong navy that has imperialistic values and a strong honor code. You're tripping if you don't think they are inspired by Japan. Of course there is no 1 to 1 comparison in ATLA because many different cultures were blended together to create the four elementals nations but there is always one that sticks out more than the others. For example: Air Nomads - Tibetans Water Tribes - Inuit Earth Kingdom - China Fire Nation - Japan

Korra was a bratty and impatient avatar. To say that Korra is a downplayed Katara is not understanding the character in my opinion. Korra grew up wanting to be the Avatar while Aang did not want to be the Avatar but he accepted it, and Korra greeted it. My main point is that both Avatars had their shortcomings, one was gentle and in connection with his spiritual side, and while Korra was a pro at bending she was not able to connect spiritually hence the ability to not be able to airbend just as Aang was not able to earth bend because Aang was not in touch with the physical side of bending. Korra was never meant to represent another character from The last airbender she was written as a terrible and sloppy young avatar who didn't know what it was like to fail or struggle. It isn't until she struggles and loses over and over and realizes being the avatar isn't just about kicking ass that she grows into the Avatar she is capable of being by the end of the series compared to how she first started. Although season 2 was executed very poorly, in my opinion, everything Korra went through in season 1 just flew out the window. By season 3 her development to a wide turn into being the Avatar Korra always wanted to be.

Here's my quick thoughts on Legend of Korra. Season 1 was OK, if rushed due to a budget limit. Season 2 was bad, full stop. Season 3 was pretty good. Season 4 was better than 1 but not as good as 3. None of them were as good as any of the seasons from the original Avatar TLA as a whole, but I enjoyed all the villains from Korra, minus Unalaq, more than Firelord Ozai. I like Korra, Bolin and Asami, but I wish they were written better in certain scenes. Tenzin deserved better. Jinora is the only one of Tenzin's kids that I liked. I wish we saw more of Firelord Izumi.

If you watch some episodes again, you will see that the fire nation has a discret autosense of superiority throw the other nations, of course, disguised to not be much complex and mature to the children. Like in the episode of Haru, when the fire guard mock the earthbending, calling him as "this barbary that looks bending"(not exacly in these words, but similar), or when Iroh has to explain to Zuko that is possible to learn and took wise from other nations, like something that Zuko never learn or never thougt about in his entire life. Avatar the last airbender was work with a series of restriccions because of the age of the general Nickelodeon's audience, and beside these restriccions, some interesting topics were aborded throw the series, i would like to see wath Avatar should able to be with no restriccions. (Sorry for the bad English, im not a native speaker)
