Fun fact: the second longest decisive game in chess history was ALSO done by Alexandra! And she won both games. This is the third longest decisive chess game in history. Absolutely amazing job by chessqueen. I don’t think people know how difficult it was to maneuver the king in the endgame before this. She was extremely precise.

0:56 When it went to the other place, the brown spot instead of the corner, Kosteniuk got a bit worried because it didn't follow exactly the W method she was hoping for. But then she changed tack and still went for a checkmate anyway, she did well. She has a similar speed to me when it comes to this checkmate.

I think they teach it in 3rd grade of chess school. But sometimes players forget how to push opponent king into right corner, wrong corner would not work . In practical game it happens not so often . Queen vs rook mate would be even harder in time trouble
@SomeMind6 ай бұрын
Nobody would forget the right corner which is simply the bishop's color. The problem arises usually from not being able to push the king all the way back to the back rank (Hikaru messed it up against Nodirbek like that) or not remembering the W maneuver of the knight.
@majormononoke89586 ай бұрын
no the problem is to get the set up and you cant really rush since there several positions that are patt... Including the last moves with the knight and the one move move to give up the tempo.@@SomeMind

Very disrespectful to test your opponent's checkmate knowledge at this level, but even though it was played out, then let her checkmate, why resign 1 move before the mate, you know you are losing either way, do they have to go through all this?
@debeastdueeast6 ай бұрын
It's not disrespectful at all, there have been cases where grandmasters weren't able to checkmate with bishop and knight. As the commentators were saying, it was Humpy's best practical try to draw.
@240dc6 ай бұрын
It's not disrespectful in the slightest. Lots of high-level players have failed in the same end-game. For example, in 2013, even the women's world chess champion, Anna Ushenina, failed to mate with knight and bishop.

Not at all. This is the hardest checkmate in chess. Of course her opponent knew that Alexandra was capable of performing it but is has happened in the past where in the pressure of the moment strong players struggle to carry out such endgames.
