Lyrics Well, I remember as it were a meal ago... Said Tommy the Cat as he reeled back to clear whatever foreign matter, May have nestled its way into his mighty throat. Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point blank down, The cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine. Truly a wonder of nature this urban predator. Tommy the cat had many a story to tell But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did... "She came slidin' down the alleyway like butter drippin' off a hot biscuit. The aroma, the mean scent, was enough to arouse suspicion in even the, Oldest of Tigers that hung around the hot spot in those days. The sight was beyond belief. Many a head snapped for double - even triple - takes as this vivacious, Feline made her her way into the delta of the alleyway, Where the most virile of the young tabbies were known to hang out. They hung in droves. Such a multitude of masculinity could only be Found in one place... And that was O'Malley's Alley... The air was thick with cat calls, But not even a muscle in her neck did, twitch as she sauntered straight into the heart of the alleyway. She knew what she wanted... She was lookin' for that stud bull. She was looking for that THE cat. And that was me. Tommy the Cat is my name. And I say unto thee... 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?' (Break) 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?' 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say babababay?' 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Ah baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby?...Say baby?'" 'Say baby do you wanna lay down with me? Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side? Everybody always requests reactions to the Bonnaroo performance of this tune and it's a good version but if you haven't heard the album version before it's impossible to understand the lyrics. Yes, Les is extremely talking fast over his virtuosic bass slappery- but if you listen closely the song is indeed about a very randy Tom Cat. Listen to the studio version from Seas of Cheese. Oh yeah, it's gonna be a fine day. Scratched myself a bit. Poured me out a bowl-a corn chex. Closest thing I could find to apple pie. Lingerin' taste of toothpaste Made the milk go down a bit funny. But you know, them chex they do satisfy. Oh yeah, this'll be a fine day. So, after my mornin' rise-n-shine and eat-n-clean. Had my mind set to hit them streets. Drizzle from the night left cold puddles out. Had my black stomp-boots on my feet. It's my day. Since I was in kneepants my pop had tried to make me realize. If I set my mind down to it I could be a big man in the public eye. So with my big blue collar on, I set out to find the easy way. What an ice cold bath it was when I found you had to pay to play. To taste the taste it's a tease that never would subside. The taste is strong but soured by my learned eyes. Well, if a woodchuck could chuck wood, he'd get down on his knees to pray. This little snappy boy might see the light this ground hog's day.

Fun Fact: Primus is the band playing before Wyld Stallyns during the battle of the bands in the second "Bill & Ted" movie, performing this song.

Wow such disrespect to the legendary les claypool. Primus had fans head banging to Tommy the cat before u was born....

The line he keeps repeating at the end is "say baby, do you want to lay down by me?".

Interesting to watch someone encounter Primus in all their absurdity and all their virtuoso talent all at once! It must be quite the experience.

We didn't need to research google, because we actually listened to the song... And appreciated the total mastery of the instrument, the sheer composing genius, the funny, nutty, crazy delivery of Les and the rest of Primus.

Wow... I guess this is about the reaction i should've expected when i read the title lol.. The question i have is why anyone suggested you try to watch this particular Primus song LIVE... They could've at least had you hear the album version. The song is supposed to be sung by two people. The narrator and the cat. Primus and more specifically Les Claypool invented their own genre of music, Claypool developed his own instrument and playing style unique to him. They have had a massive following since the early 90s and it's well deserved. They are definitely an acquired taste but are extremely talented and unique. Obviously with a theatrical flair.

I've known these lyrics since 91. Primus was a band that metalheads could listen to without shame. They are one of my all- time favorite bands.

The song is being played a lot faster than the studio recording... You can hear the lyrics better and any fan knows what's going on, no Google needed. Part of the charm of this band is seeing how ridiculously fast they can play their songs live. Go to one of their shows and it'll be the most fun you've ever had at a concert, especially if you're in that bouncing, moshing mob!! The first time I saw them, in Tijuana back in 1990, it was insane to say the least and is hands down one of my most favorite-est show of all time, and I've seen a lot of shows. And they were an incredible band long before they had their dad look, so no they weren't a bunch of dads that got together to form a band. Say baby do you wanna lay down with me, Say baby do you wanna lay down by my side, A- baby do you wanna lay down with me, Say baby, SAY BABY!!!

"gibberish" Welcome to real music by real talented musicians! You have a long way to go. I never researched the lyrics on google because when I listened to it in 1995, there was no google. I had the CD pamphlet for that. If you listen to the album song and mot the live, you'd get the lyrics.

we've been listening to primus and going to their concerts since before you were born. that's HOW we know the lyrics. the web wasn't even around when this song came out! 😂

"I don't get it". Yup, that's one way to define Primus in a sentece

lol, the entire audience did not research it on google and they weren't a bunch of old dads when the song first came out on their album Sailing the Seas of Cheese in 1991. They were in their late 20s when they released that album and this concert is years later so the fans at this concert are already very familiar with the song
