What's crazier is Wanna Be Myself IS AN AD! It's for a sport clothing line called Andar, and they kinda "pun" it in the chorus "Andareuda". Mamamoo's ad songs have word plays to put the brands in the lyrics without making it feels like an ad. Another fan's favorite Mamamoo's ad song is Gleam for Davich, a glasses brand. The chorus mentions "Dabichinaa~~" (gleam) which, a word play for Davich!

You're not alone in your opinion about their singing. Mamamoo has long been considered to be the vocal gold standard among girl groups. They're even better live than on record because of their amazing, always live vocals (they can't lip sync to save their lives), charismatic stage presence and bff team chemistry. Performer is Mamamoo's term for dance & choreo. You can think of Moonbyul & Wheein as the dance captains. Fyi Mamamoo is part of the creative team. They're involved in all creative aspects of their career including songwriting, vocal arrangements, choreography, styling and MV concepts and each member has a successful solo career as well. They have the most songwriting credits of any girl group in kpop history. Except for Wanna Be Myself these tracks were produced and arranged by their two primary in house producer/songwriting partners at RBW, Kim Dohoon and Park Woosang, with the members contributing to the lyrics and music on several songs (your bias Hwasa co-wrote the lyrics & music for Hip). Wanna Be Myself is a CF song for a clothing company and was written and produced by the co-ed team Cosmic Sound & Cosmic Girl, who have done several other ad songs and a number of b-sides with Mamamoo. I found it amusing that you liked Decalcomanie the least and disliked a number of things about the production. It's the only song among the hundreds in MMM's discography that was mixed by a westerner, Grammy award winning sound engineer Tony Maserati. These five songs are a small sample of their versatility. They have one of if not the most diverse discography I've ever heard and they seem to pull off any genre authentically and effortlessly whether it's pop, hip hop, jazz, rock, r&b, EDM, bossa nova, reggaeton, 60's soul or whatever. Solar even did a country song for a kdrama OST. People say Mamamoo can sing anything and write a song about anything and they're probably right. Had to laugh when you said RBW's marketing dept needs some work. Imo RBW has been a good artistic home for Mamamoo but they suck at promoting their artists. Mamamoo is a world class group who deserves global recognition but their album sales are a fraction of the most popular kpop groups. Not that MMM isn't successful but there's an enormous disparity between their talent and the level of success they've achieved and the same could be said about every group under RBW. Hope you check out more Mamamoo. Fair warning: MMM is one of the deepest rabbit holes in kpop and, as moomoos like to say, Once you Wheein you can't Whee-out!

This is why Mamamoo are acknowledged as the vocal queens of kpop. Their vocal range, technique and harmonization are out of this world. Their discography is huge at over 300 songs, including solo songs, OST's, covers, etc. I'll start with some fun facts about Mamamoo. Self made group from an unknown company who literally started with nothing. The company couldn't afford to provide them with choreographers, stylists, promotions, etc. They promoted themselves by busking on the streets. For their debut music show performance of Mr Ambiguous there were only three people in the audience to support them, Wheein's friend and Moonbyul's two sisters. Mamamoo are the most credited girl group in kpop, Moonbyul is the most credited female songwriter. Each member of Mamamoo have very successful solo careers. Mamamoo can and do every genre extremely well. Mamamoo always sing live and they sound better live than their recorded studio versions. Every live performance is different because they add in different ad-libs, rearrange the instrumentals and even cover their each others solo songs flawlessly. They only thing Mamamoo can't do is lip sync. Many 2NE1 fans (Blackjacks) are also Mamamoo fans (Moomoos) because they remind them of each other. Amazing live performers, charismatic, commanding stage presence, they promote self empowerment and equality and that is why Mamamoo truly connect with their fans on a personal level. Hwasa and Wheein are Blackjacks. 2NE1's Park Bom has publicly said that Mamamoo is the only girl group that reminds her of 2NE1. She even personally asked Wheein to feature on her song 4:44

Re: the ice cream scene at the end of Where Are We Now - this song was recorded for their 7th anniversary, when their continuation as a group was still up in the air. So the ice cream at the end is a callback to a scene in another MV, Wind Flower, while also implying that their friendship will go on regardless of the fate of the group.

The MV is good but when you see Mamamoo's stage performance live, the atmosphere is different... you will definitely fall in love with Mamamoo when you see their performance on stage at concerts and festivals or performances at music awards... they are total and have fun on stage. The audience was also carried away by the atmosphere because they were singing live.. You can find many genres of music in Mamamoo's songs, at the beginning of their career there were many jazz genres, then they developed until now...

Where Are We Now was a song they wrote about their feeling of uncertainty as they were approaching their 7 year mark. Since, as most K-idol contracts, it was their year their contract ended, they had to decide the future of Mamamoo. So they were reflecting on their journey and anticipating what was to come. So this video was really about the being at a crossroads and recalling their past together. So there’s scenes of the rv, the train to overpass, the floor covered in records etc. Ending it’s actually a throwback scene from a previous MV. Windflower is one of their most underrated title tracks which Mamamoo and Moomoos see as being their secret gem. So it holds sentimental value to the group and fans. The MV ends with a little McDonalds promo with them getting McFlurries and eating it together. Though that scene ended a bit more chaotically with them attacking each others faces with it. Lol. So this scene was really meant as a sign to Moomoos that while most groups disband at this point in their career Mamamoo would continue as they always have. I can totally understand wanting to disregard that scene in terms of judging the song/video. But I just wanted you to know that it was intentional and not just a throwaway scene. Also, I know it seems like kind of a trend with their videos but I promise it isn’t. Lol. The end of Starry Night was there for a few reasons. The first is, I believe, because they had so much amazing footage from New Zealand that they didn’t want to waste it. So they extended the video a bit to use it. I say this because they’ve also reused some of footage in other ways, like on a tv in another MV, as a background for a fam meet performance etc. So that’s probably the main reason. But this song was also the start of their 4 Seasons/4 Colors project, where each of the members was assigned a season and a color that represented them. And on each of their albums that member would have a solo song. Hwasa was assigned spring and the color yellow, so her album Yellow Flower featured her solo song which you heard at the end and the title track, Starry Night. So I believe that’s why they chose to add the song at the end. Kind of a way to promote the project. They didn’t do this for any of the other solo songs for the rest of the project tho, which is another reason I think it was mostly added for the footage.

The truth is that if Mamamoo had been part of a big company(Hybe JYP Sm YG..) they would be their top artists today. Having said that, the girls reached the top with their own strength (which not everyone does) and the great talent that sets them apart. To think that the company didn't even have money for a choreographer and therefore they had to do everything themselves is crazy. They literally built a respected name for themselves in the industry solely by themselves and the few people who believed in them. Despite the unfair hatred they received, they continued to focus on themselves and their uniqueness, and this can be perceived in their songs and performances. I recommend Killing Voice on Dingo! Fun fact : Credits to Solar for creating this trend of Killing Voice, before Mamamoo there was only Killing Verse and it was a channel for only rappers, but Solar wanted to be on their channel so she contacted them but only some time later they agreed and let a kpop group be there, and the rest is history!!

I love Solar's attitude towards life... really all of the members, to be honest. They see a door closed in their face, they don't just knock, they kick it down. I love how proactive Solar is and how she shows off doing what she loves and doesn't give a damn about the detractors. And the same can be said for all of them. We NEED more women acting under their own initiative and agency in K-Pop. We have far too many idols bending over backwards to please the public, but Mamamoo have consistently sent up a message that is very "This is who we are. You can take it or leave it, but we are going to perform and work our asses off anyway for our own enjoyment." I still remember watching their debut stage and the Mr. Ambiguous MV the day it came out and had one of those "these girls will be superstars" moments, and I don't think I've ever felt that strongly about a group's career trajectory before or since. When Um Oh Ah Yeah climbed the charts to sit in the top 3 almost all summer, swapping places back and forth with two of the other greatest K-Pop summer songs, Sistar's Shake It and AOA's Heart Attack, it didn't feel surprising, it felt justified. If BTS is the standard for coming from a nothing agency to build it from the group up, I think Mamamoo really is that group for girl groups. I can't think of another girl group that has had as much of an impact and longevity as Mamamoo that didn't come from an already well established agency. When people talked about the top girl groups of 3rd gen during that actual time period, Mamamoo was always part of the discussion when it came to the top groups of the generation.

I'm actually glad they were from such a small and new company. I think this allows them more chances and opportunities to participate on the tracks, mv, etc. Bigger companies want to control everything and sometimes it seems like they care more about the money and not the artist. I mean, look how SM treats a lot of artists. Look at the way they have treated, and are still treating one of their best groups, Exo. Denying them opportunities and not promoting them out west, not promoting their comeback like they should, slave contracts, not protecting them. The mistreatment so bad that 4 of them left, created their own label, and some of the Exo members even signed with them instead of SM.

Mamamoo is THE vocal group. They are also amazing live, if you'd like you can check out the Immortal songs medley or the Dingo live performance video. I will say Decalcomanie is amazing live, it just hits different when they perfom it on stage, it demands attention and their vocals shine so well. Where are we now was a song that was released at very intense time for everyone, it has a story that grabbed at fans hearts. And the ice cream eating was an homage to an older MV of theirs. I think you'd enoy that MV it's for their song called Windflower, it's very cinnematic. Wanna be myself is actually an ad song they are promoting a clothing brand. They have another add song that everyone thought was a title track called Gleam, it's one of my favourite mamamoo tracks. They also have few fun/funny soongs because they like to play around. Waggy, Sleep in the car, Taller than you, Aze Gag. They don't stick to one thing that's why their dischography is so fun, because there's many genres and many colours. They are also all amazing soloists. I'd recommend Moonbyul's Eclipse, Lunatic and Shutdown, Solar's Spit it out, Honey and Blues (doesn't have MV though) , Wheein's Easy, Watercolor and Goodbye, Hwasa's Maria, LMM and I'm a 빛. I think these all cover their different colours and sounds.

THERE ARE SO MANY GREAT SONGS LEFT 😍 I know you guys are falling in love with these girls/this group 😆 Also i agree yeah sure there are other groups that have great singers. But Mamamoo..CONSISTS of amazing singers which don't overlap with each other. And have their roles perfectly set in the group. You can basically give any parts to any of the girls (apart from the rapper of course which even she can sing). I just can't. Mamamoo is one of those one in a million groups that is PERFECT. I have been missing Mamamoo reactions so much! Thank you for this. They are the vocal queens and I think the thing that really sets them apart from most other girl groups are they are mature talented artists who are highly involved in their music with stage presence like no one else literally their award show stages blow many people away including other kpop groups especially cool how they adlib and change up their performances too. They have amazing chemistry as a group (music and personality wise) but also kill it individually as solo artists as well. Hwasa with the low breathy voice is undoubtedly my absolute favorite female kpop soloist. Her music is typically self written with deep emotional meaning as she has probably received some of the most hatred in K-pop just for who she is and how she looks (tan skin, curvy body).

I love how they are more "mature" sounding then the rest, and I agree that I love songs at lower registers. Indeed, their vocals are out of this world! Like what others might have mentioned, I've seen them live in concert and it was an amazing experience! Really hoping to see a part 2 if possible!! I have Starry Night as my alarm for years now.. Because how can I have a bad day when that song welcomes me to a new day? That's how epic it is :) Don't worry you won't get hate for saying your outro thoughts. Mamamoo IS acknowledged as vocal gold in the industry. The industry, the gp, even their idol & artist colleagues see Mamamoo as top-tier vocalists since the beginning and at the moment they're continuing the legacy while doing their solo projects. By now, they all have successful album comebacks and ongoing korean/international solo concert tours.

Their vocals and harmonies are just amazing -Where are we now was their first ballad title track released to comemorate their 7 years together. It was released shortly before the girls announced whether they were re-signing contracts with their label so when it was released everyone was on edge waiting to hear whether they would continue as Mamamoo or disband... they are indeed still Mamamoo 😊 though less active as a group right now 😢 -Starry night was filmed in New Zealand 🥰 -Wanna be myself is a CF song for athleisure wear 'Andar'. Wanna be Myself is an ad song for the athletic wear brand "Andar" so the chorus is a play on words. "An dareuda" sounds like "Andar". they have other ad songs: *Gleam* for eyewear brand "Davichi". Chorus goes "Dabichina" so another play on words for the brand. Another is *Everyday* for the brand "Maeil Bio" which is a probiotic drink brand. the chorus goes "Oh maeil bwayo" which again is a play on words. *Sky sky* was for the game "Icarus M". *Woohoo* is a mamamoo CLASSIC which was the ad song for the "LG G5 phone". another classic is *Girl Crush* was for a game called "Innisia Nest". They also had *Taste the Feeling* for coke. to moos, you can add other songs i may have missed. edit: added their other ad songs

Where Are We Now was released at the point wherein their contract with the company was ending and the public had NO IDEA whether any of them were going to renew. It was a very emotional time for Mamamoo and MooMoos (Mamamoo fans). The ice cream scene was very much intended as it was a callback to a previous song that was part of their very heavy and busy 4 album project where the song that featured an icecream scene was the only one that didn't get any awards, fitting the theme of "Where are we now?" as their popularity and success grew from no awards to many.

Mamamoo is known for their vocals, strong social messages, and their variety/range of talents. Not many, if any, groups can match them for raw vocal talent (Dreamcatcher, Red Velvet, and Nmixx come to mind). Truly an underappreciated 3rd gen powerhouse

I've always said it, Mamamoo's voices are used as instruments in their tracks. The talent those girls have is INSANE, I really hope you will react to their whole discography because it's an amazing journey...life performances are a must, their live stages are even better. Hwasa has of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard, you should listen to 'Be calm' and LMM...even Cyndi Lauper said LMM is on her playlist. It's not just her voice, it's her everything. Her intricate lyricism, her commanding stage presence, her vocal technique, they way she is involved in every single aspect of her work. She has such a sexy brain and unfortunately that's not so common among singers, she's really a precious diamond

Hwasa actually has enough solo content to do an entire video and you would love it. Actually, all for of them have amazing solo careers that you both would enjoy, even if it's for completely different reasons. They are all unique in their music styles, personality, artistry, etc. I especially look forward to you doing a video of all Hwasa. Maria, LMM, I'm a B*, Twit, and of course you apart heard a little bit of Be Calm. It will probably be most entertaining to watch that list in the reverse order of how i just listed them, though. 😂 It would be a good build up. 😁

The norm in kpop is only one title track from an EP/album gets promoted a whole lot. The random interjected outros/post bridge is used in a way to promote b-sides to their EPs (in the Decalcomanie MV it was the track Memory; in Starry Night, Hwasa's solo Be Calm). This tactic is usually employed by companies who are not that well known - grabbing all opportunities to spotlight other songs. It's a smart marketing decision, but agree with you guys that the interjections do feel disjointed from the main song.

as someone who sometimes likes to show people kpop, it's always the most fun when the ~lore~ behind it is explored a little too. decalcomanie is, as you said, one of the more explicit songs in kpop. during their whole career, mamamoo has stood out by not adhering to a standard. they are a vocal-focused group in an industry that favors dancing and beauty, they don't "look" like the typical kpop girl group member, whether by their body shape or by their preferred fashion. yet, they are so excellent at what they do that it is absolutely irrellevant. i still think a lot of what other commenters have pointed out is important or at least good to know. that where are we now is a song for their 7th anniversary, which is oftentimes the end for kpop groups, that wanna be myself is an ad and all the references they put into the hip lyrics and music video.

I love that you truly appreciate the only two K-pop groups I listen to - Mamamoo and Red Velvet. Mamamoo writes much of its own lyrics and some music. They are both on another level with their vocals and arrangements. The two groups are also close friends with one another.

As a moomoo, thank you for that review of our girls! It's always interesting to hear the takes of non-moos, we're only ever full of praise for them so it's nice to get some outside perspective (esp not ones tainted by fanwars). I'm surprised by the low-ish score you gave for Decalcomanie and the high score you gave for Wanna Be Myself tbh, but the reasoning is sound. Decalcomanie is REVERED in the fandom for being one of the most vocally challenging songs in their discography, to the point that other groups have difficulty covering it. But I suppose you were looking more in the production side of things, and yeah, I can't really say anything about it, I'm not well-versed. Wanna Be Myself was produced by Cosmic Girl, who has worked with Mamamoo several times both in the group and their solos, so by this point in their career she knows how to make the music elevate their voices. Why I find this an odd choice is mostly because it's not even a popular song of theirs! This was written for their collaboration with a sportswear company (Andar) - it's basically an advert. I'm glad to hear some love about it tho, it's really not a choice most people recommending Mamamoo would give. HIP is their most popular song, but personally, it's not my favorite bc it doesn't showcase their voices as well as their other songs. But I love that you gave me a better perspective on it and made me love it more. Also, this is a pattern I've noticed with reviewers but new listeners do tend to be drawn to Hwasa at first. She does have that vocal quality that's layered and interesting. Personally tho I'm a Solar bias but only by a hair - there's so much to love about all of them talent-wise and personality-wise, so I love all of them! Anyway, yes, we're very proud of their vocal prowess. I know I'll sound biased but they ARE regarded as one of the best vocal groups (at the very least, in their generation and amongst the girls) by industry giants. If you still want to hear them for just the vocals I would suggest watching their Killing Voice video and their Immortal Medley video.

The reason Hwasa solo was at the end was bc Starry Night was the title track of an album part of the Four Season albums where each album represents a season and a member, and a solo song of this member is included in the album Also wanna be myself was written by Cosmic Girl (you hear the "Cosmic" at the start of every song she composed and produced), she's a producer at rbw that did a lot of Mamamoo songs, and there's a reason she's so loved in the fandom 😂😂 she's such a good producer and composer, every song of hers hits so hard (I keep editing bc I'm writing as I react to the video 😂😂) HIP is the most famous song of them and it's for a reason 😂
