Supposadly it was adopted to military in december 21 1927, i guess thats why they call it 27. But every manual calls it just DP, not even "DP variant of 1927" or something. UPD i've found a repair manual from 1939 that states it was adopted in 1926... So just call it DP and you won't be wrong.

@Daddo22
@Daddo22 7 ай бұрын
@@glandhound yes the IS-7 that in was so fictional it actually passes the acceptance trials and was accepted into service... The order for mass production never came mainly due to how massive logistical failure proved to be the IS-4 (with weight of 60t, it was too heavy for the vast majority of Soviet bridges, yet the IS-7 was even heavier at 68t), and high per unit cost, neither of which the Soviets were willing to put up with since they were no longer in war. If the war had still continued or the former allies started fighting against each other, they may have decided that they can deal with almost exactly the same weight as the German Tiger II... Had the order for mass production of the IS-7 been given, the two 7.62 mm MGs fixed to the hull sides and the two on the turret sides facing rearward would likely be dropped to cut the cost. You can see this "fictional" tank in the Kubinka tank museum near Moscow, Russia, along with Maus, Object 279 and other prototypes and mass produced tanks.

The only tank that had this gun as a coaxial is the T-10M heavy tank. The original T-10 had 12.7x108mm HMG, the T-10M upgraded to the 14.5mm. It made sense because the role of the T-10M is a vehicle that sits back and fires at long range at its targets. At such range rifle calibre machine guns were not much use, so HMGs were used. I have read that American pilots feared the 14.5mm more than most other weapons because it was small enough to hide easily so it was not usually spotted till it opened fire, and the very high speed of the rounds it fired made it very effective against all types of aircraft which are often made light weight. It has twice the muzzle energy of the 50 cal. The M2 Browning has a nice rate of fire and keeps on target rather well which makes it more effective than some older Soviet HMGs, but Kord fixes that and the 14.5mm is normally used on vehicles which also fixes that too. Europe made a 15mm HMG based on the 14.5mm but with a SLAP type round which could penetrated 40mm at 1,000m. The KPV doesn't have a SLAP or APFSDS round because it is a single feed belt fed weapon so all the different rounds it fires need to fire to the same point of aim otherwise they will go high or low.

If you put the KPV into perspective it took at minimum at least 20 years before a non-tank combat vehicle had at least a measure of protection against something that almost every Soviet Combat Formation carried. It is terrifying to imagine as NATO, that when you had to attack a Soviet Position and you are not in a Bradley, a single KPV would be enough to turn your vehicle to swiss cheese.

A friend of mine once informally referred to the KPV and the MG-151 (in its ground and door mounted configurations) as SHMGs or Superheavy Machine Guns. They have developed air burst shells for their 23mm AA gun weapons. They have 23 x 152mm shells for the ZU-23 towed gun and the ZSU-23-4 SPAAG, but they also have the 23x115mm rounds for their aircraft guns as used in the MiG-21/23/31. It is a similar size to the 14.5 x 114mm round but uses a 23mm projectile that is quite heavy for its calibre. The 23 x 115mm round uses the same projectile as the 23 x 152mm AA gun round so in theory it could use the air burst rounds too. The only platforms that use the 23 x 115mm rounds are late model Mi-24s with the 23mm twin barrel chin turret. Older Il-76 transport planes also use the gun which has a low muzzle velocity of about 700m/s but a very high rate of fire of about 3,500rpm. For AA and anti armour use they are spoiled for choices and airburst round are becoming necessary due to the abundance of drones on the front line and elsewhere.

When I was in the army, I had the opportunity to operate such a weapon at a range shooting for air and sea targets. They were two linked guns placed on the platform of a truck. I was a KUB operator myself, but since I was a child I have always been attracted to firearms. As children in the 1980s, my friends and I would go to the local military training ground to buy ammunition. Mainly blank cartridges, of which there were plenty, but you could also find other cool things there. In the place where sappers were blowing up the found second-war ammunition and weapons, I once found, among others, a German MG.151 with a caliber of 2 cm and two MG.17s.

@@NikolaosKorelisthe IAI (instant action incindiary) is actually quite similar to Raufoss. It's an incindiary round that bursts shortly after impact so against thin skin targets it will spray lots of incindiary fragments inside. As for slap it's largely unnecessary because you can already get through about 35-40mm of steel with the AP rounds and SLAP would probably not actually offer enough improvement in penetration to matter. Typically if a vehicle has more than 35mm of effective armor on it then it is likely going to be in excess of 100mm of RHA so even if the penetration was doubled it wouldn't really matter.

Short recoil operated, rotating bolt with rollers going on cam tracks on reciever and barrel extention. On KPV they shuffled the tracks and rollers position. Theres crap ton of locking lugs on the bolt of this thing! 8 raws with 6 or 7 lugs in each raw! So 48 to 56 locking lugs!

The only problem with the KPV is that it’s too heavy to be effectively swivel mounted. Yeah you can mount the gun but a meaningful amount of ammo requires something with the support of a turret ring. Comparing it to the M2 is a bit unfair, since the KPV is basically 50% bigger in all dimensions. Regarding coax mounting, the M2 can be coax mounted as well, it’s just the American military doesn’t see it as necessary. The KPV’s niche as a APC armament is interesting to me because it seems to me that it’s the small size of Russian APCs and APC turrets that creates the need for the KPV not the other way around. If there was room for a 23mm or 30mm they would use it. Regarding range, IRL a KPV has little advantage over any other HMG beyond 2km. With solid rounds your odds of doing more than harassing fire are limited. Bracket a target with 23mm at 3,000m and you’ll likely get hits, do the same with 14mm or 50BMG and you’re hoping for luck. At that point the increased ammo of a 50BMG belt might be of more use than the mass of 14mm but it’s kind of academic. In direct fire past 2,000m your hoping and praying. The KPV’s most iconic use has been on Technicals IMO.

And then you currently have US DOD testing and fielding man portable .338 LMG's with no recoil, and able to reach out 5 kilometers away. It does not look like a very good offering especially when compared to other equivalents having more or less the same capabilities while being more portable like the M2.

In the .50 class the Russians use the Kord in 12.7x108mm, which weights 25 kg only. The whooping 13 kg (a third!) lighter than the M2. Comparing the KPV with the M2 is like comparing an AK with a BB gun.

That would really make your eyes water. There is also the trade off issue IE more hitting power for less rounds carried. For defending my bunker/trench it would depend on line of site. A minimi in 5.56 is useful and very portable if LOS is say 40 meters. If you are on hard pan which usually gives you about 2999m LOS then the KPV would be more useful.

A good comparison on german side would be MG-151/15. And just like MG-151/20, after the war soviet made a lower velocity 23mm autocannon using 14,5*114mm case as a base. Thankfully for soviet tankers, germans never came up with AT rifle that used their 15mm round... sadly for soviet tankers, T-26, BT-5/7 and T-60 weren't immune to already exististing german AT rifles:(

Honestly it still amazes me that the Vickers 6 ton saw as wide spread adoption as it did. (The T-26 was a Vickers 6 ton license built by the Soviets with a 45mm instead of 37mm gun and they upped the armor to 25mm) It's really remarkable that these things weren't considered outdated until around 1938 because things like the M2 browning could penetrate most tanks in the beginning of the war.
@TheArklyte
@TheArklyte 7 ай бұрын
@@dominuslogik484 they weren't outdated in technological terms for a few more years then that, it's the engine and armor that failed them. I'll explain... Italians had several T-26 as trophies in Spain. Those tanks became a basis of italian medium and heavy tank projects. They also captured one BT-5, but apparently that thing vanished as it had no impact on italian tank development. Anyway, T-26 became basis of "temporary" M11/39 tank and mainline production M13/40, M14/41 and M15/42 medium tanks. The latter had "forked" into P75, which eventually ended up becoming P26/40 heavy tank in italian service. General layout, suspension and even MTU were still heavily T-26 derived and thus are one of the last Vickers 6 ton derivatives designed and put into service.

I wonder how drastically different the amount of ammo for the coax/commanders gun you can store/carry on hand or in a vehicle(T-72) if you bring the KPV vs DshK vs PKT. It seems like the US took a different approach now, seeing as we are trying to put the Apaches 30mm on everything. Instead of bridging the gap between 12.7mm & 20/25mm we just went with a medium velocity 30mm.

There WAS once a western effort to counter it. The FN-BRG-15 but sadly it got shelved in favor of the P-90. The closest you can do while having MORE power than the 14.5 is the 20mm. So many M113's, Deuce-and-a-halfs, Helicopters and plenty of other military machines fell victim to this thing. Swiss cheese is an understatement. Even the best CIVILIAN armored vehicles (i.e. Chevrolet Suburban) can't withstand it.

My experience with the Chevy Suburban, both light & heavy armor (steel door plates, resistant glass, Kevlar flooring and run-flats) both in Bosnia and Kosovo, did the job for area patrols - primarily on improved roads. None of us were under the illusion that it was a true "armored vehicle". Even our up-armored Hummers were considered to be not much more than a hardened car. I vividly recall the plink-plink of 7.62×39 a time or two, or three...

To be fair, there are a range of roughly similarly sized Western alternatives. There’s the Nexter (ex-GIAT) M621 20x102mm, the M230LF & AEI Venom 30x113mm and others. Essentially any remote mount that can take an M2HB can take a 20x102mm or 30x113mm. There’s also the FLW-200+ with its Rh.202 20x139mm. So in reality the BRG-15 just wasn’t different enough to justify it.
