The Russian Kamov Ka-50 "Black Shark" (Russian: Чёрная акула, Romanized: Chyornaya akula, English: kitefin shark), NATO reporting name Hokum A, is a Soviet/Russian single-seat attack helicopter with the distinctive coaxial rotor system of the Kamov design bureau. It was designed in the 1980s and adopted for service in the Russian army in 1995. The Ka-50 is manufactured by the Progress company in Arsenyev. It is used as a heavily armed scout helicopter, and is notable for having a rescue ejection system, rare for helicopters.
During the late 1990s, Kamov and Israel Aerospace Industries developed a tandem-seat cockpit version, the Kamov Ka-50-2 "Erdogan" (Russian: Эрдоган, Turkish: Erdoğan), to compete in Turkey's attack helicopter competition. Kamov also designed another two-seat variant, the Kamov Ka-52 "Alligator" (Russian: Аллигатор, NATO reporting name: Hokum B). The Ka-52's unit cost is US$16 million as of 2023.
The Ka-50 Black Shark helicopter, developed by Kamov Helicopters JSC, carries the Nato codename Hokum A, with Hokum B the two-seat version, Ka-52. Ka-50 is also known as Werewolf. It is a high-performance combat helicopter with day and night capability, high survivability and fire power to defeat air targets and heavily armoured tanks armed with air defence weapons. It entered service with the Russian Army during 1995 and is manufactured at the Sazykin Aviation Company Progress based in Arseniev Maritime Territory, Russia.
A first batch of eight Ka-50 aircraft has been delivered. 12 Ka-52 were to be procured for Russian Air Force special operations in 2005, but funding for the programme was cut. The Russian Air Force operates 15 Ka-50 and 20 Ka-52 helicopters
A night attack version, Ka-50N, with Samshit-50T thermal imager, day TV and laser rangefinder was also developed but did not enter full productio. Kamov also joined with Israeli Aircraft Industries (IAI) to produce a version for the Turkish defence forces, the Ka-50-2 Erdogan that was compatible with Nato weapons and had an Israeli equipped cockpit. The contract was eventually awarded to the A129.
Hope you enjoy!!

The Mi-24V Hind will always be my favorite. It’s just so unapologetically utilitarian, multi-role capable and aggressive looking that it has a beauty entirely its own. I do like ka-50 (the 52 less so). I love the Shkval system and its datalink capability. That with the vihkrs and Shipunov 30mm makes this thing a real monster that can lurk behind trees, buildings and hillsides 4 miles away, fire and then disappear without anyone ever knowing it was there. The Hind is a lot of things, but it’s definitely not that. For that reason, I do hold the Ka-50 in a special place. For those interested in these more modern Russian helo’s, I highly recommend watching the analysis of the battle for Hostomel (antanov) airport. It’s unique as far as battle footage and records go because of the scale, perspectives and variety of machines used. It also allows us a fascinating glimpse into how the 52 is used, at least in planning and up to that point. In that battle they seamed to take on a tactical information and attack multirole that transmits data and battlefield info but can also engage and take part in fighting as well. I think it’s pretty interesting, at least for people like us.

The Kamov series helicopters are beast of helicopters . Anti propaganda is doing them so wrong. If the AH-64 was used in direct fire support rolls like in the early days of the war or was under the constant threat of the most advanced manpads and sam systems and its bases being attacked by long range missiles, it to would suffer high losses. Ive seen footage of kamovs in Ukraine literally blowing their own tales off, taking direct hit from large caliber auto cannons/machine guns , taking manpads and surviving . Theres even footage out there of 1 KA-52 surviving 18 manpads but its countermeasures and active protection system disrupted the targettings. The Viktar missiles are more powerful than we realize to, theres footage of them attacking M2-Bradleys ODSAs from over 17km away. And now we're seeing them use the LURMS missile which has 125kg of explosive and 24km range, for comparison the infamous hellfire missiles of the Apache got 7kg of explosive and 12km range. The one thing i can never understand about the KA-50s/52 is why they use the BMP2s' 2A42 cannon in a fixed position, the Mi-28s use the same gun but its fully rotatable and they had a lot of success with it in Syria like how the US uses the apache's 30mm to take out light threats from extreme ranges. The russians revealed they're working on a new heavily modernized upgraded KA-52 and i cant wait to see it (not in actual combat) . My favorite attack helicopter will always be the AH-64 longbow, the radar dome always intrigued me because i didnt know its function and i saw it in a ton of movies and my dad bought me an expensive model of one when i was a kid. Then i would say the Mi-24 hinds , they just looked soo badass with their large rocket pods

The Ka-50 only has one crew so there is nobody to operate the rotating (turreted) 30mm gun, the pilot would be too busy flying the aircraft for that. The Ka-52 however, has a co-pilot seat and does mount a turreted 30mm gun instead of a fixed one.

@@ivancorey7389 Yes ive seen countless videos of KA-52s hunting Bradleys and other tanks and that infamous video of 1 destroying an entire convoy of Leopard2s, Bradleys and MaxxPros Mraps but prior to that u saw countless videos of people trying to downplay its capabilties with stuff like they lost over 50% of their fleet, poor thermals (which only looks so because of video sharing compressing the quality), they also tried using that video with the Stugna-P to justify it not having any defense systems etc
@ivanstepanovic1327
@ivanstepanovic1327 Ай бұрын
When Ka-50 appeared, it had two color schemes: all black and three color. The first was named "Black Shark", and the later was named "Werewolf". That other scheme does appear briefly in your video. Also, decals were a bit different, of course. "Werewolf" had a decal... Well, it's my profile photo you are currently looking at. Ka-52 was developed due to realizations that one man to fly this thing is simply too much. And as for coaxial rotor - there is a video from Ukraine where Ka-52 is flying back to base pretty much without its tail section (it is hanging by some cable or smth like that, dangling in the air). Still got back to base no problem...

The "Little Bird" as it's so modular, it can be a serious attack helicopter in it's own right with dual Miniguns or rocket pods, or the Navy SEAL's favourite insertion vehicle flown by the Night Stalkers as well as an excellent scout helicopter, the missions they flew in Vietnam are insane! They would hug the jungle canopy close enough to spot individual enemy soldiers for the following AC Cobras to attack, literally looking for lit cigarettes etc.. There's a great documentary on them here on YT. They are also always the classic 'bad guys' helicopter in movies like 'Apache'. For looks alone I'd probably say the Cobra or Viper though.

Hey Matsimus I really enjoyed the video, it was informative and broadly unbiased as always which I really like. The only thing I felt was lacking was the background video for the later part. It felt like I was watching some sort of weird Russian rambo escape scene or something. I dunno if maybe there was not much proper footage of the KA-50 around to use instead but I just felt like it detracted from your normally really high quality feel. Otherwise great video as always.

AH-1Z Cobra. As a Marine in wargames, we had one "Whiskey" sneak up on us at night. It flew down a 60 ft wide 40 ft deep valley AT NIGHT! It popped up 200 feet from us. We only had enough time to look at each other and ask "WTF is that!?" before it popped up out of the darkness. If the OLD one can do that, the newest version must be even better. Pilots burden: Well, despite this now has been fixed by two-seaters, RU even in ther worst times had always a good education as well as many potential material for ther army. And above that we can go a bit dramaturgical and say the're still descendants of horse tribes, so they seem to have a feeling for manouver warfare on land (and almost laughably lack that on the sea ... submarines excluded). So RU air force (almost) always felt pretty safe in having top notch people at hand to shoulder as many tasks as needed. I mean as a funny and probably bit unfair comparison today we have US senat hearings about pilots being inable to understand the pretty basic phenomenon of a paralax, and reveal that they secretly ALL belived to have seen a ton of alien spaceships in ther careers due to that inability. Pretty wild, imho. (It was mostly goose they spoted, btw.) Anyway, SU and RU always have been more based, while the west invested in fancy tech solutions to cope with numerical inferiority. So western designs have been more instabile, while having an edge if ther prefered strategical niche is viable. Now they seem to go for encapsuled electronics that do ther job on ther own, putting the smallest possible burden on the pilots. Jammer, e-warfare, laser softkill and cross-data management f.e. come with pretty small numbers of buttons.

It’s interesting that the US has cancelled its FARC program in light of the lessons from Ukraine. Helicopters going behind enemy lines (or even within manpad range of them) are too vulnerable to be survivable. Plus the role it was being designed for can now be done by drones without risking pilots.

Maybe because in the early stages in the chaos saw lots of them getting shot down while Bayraktars blew convoys. Later situations changed when Ka-52s blunted the Ukrainian counter offensive especial after getting longer ranged atgms to stay safe from manpads , meanwhile the Bayraktars got shotdown nearly to extinction and now only stay kms back as ISR platform instead of strike. The russians have ever started adding longer ranged Iz 305 tv guided missiles to keep their helicopters safe from even the long range Manpads like Mistrals and RBS-90s. Ukraine has resorted to hunting these helos on the ground with HIMARS and stormshadows to mitigate this.

KA50 & 52 are good looking aircraft (especially in the Matt black finish), but number one is the Bell 360 Invictus. I know it’s only a prototype and that it’s a scout helicopter, but damn she’s pretty.

I don’t know how anyone can claim the AH-64 is overrated. An equally egregious failure is the oversight of the AH-01. I don’t think any nation has the temerity to claim they produce a combat helicopter superior to the United States

KA50 is a formidable attack helicopter. The coaxial rotor allows some interesting advantages. My favourite attack helicopter has to be the AH1 Cobra. I’m so old I’m Vietnam vintage and the Cobra with its gun and rockets offered much needed support to us lowly grunts.

@@jimohara In a modern battlefield, they are obsolete. In a WWI style war like in Ukraine, they aren't. Ukraine has no Navy and pretty much no Air Force, that's why russian T72s and T55s can operate. However, some 3000 of them were destroyed(confirmed)! If Ukraine had a proper Air Force, that number would have been much higher! The majority of the tanks were destroyed by cheap comercial drones dropping RPG rounds, which is ridiculous. In a conventional war without any nukes at all between the US and Russia, the russian Air Force would be quicly wiped out. Their tanks would be just sitting ducks for the US Air Force, not just obsolete but useless! It would make no difference whatsoever if they threw 2000 or 20000 tanks into battle. A single fully armed Apache helicopter can take out 16 T90 tanks with its Hellfire missiles. Now picture some A10s and some F16s into action and these are really old airplanes. Just look up the number of tanks destroyed by the US in the first Iraq war. It's 3300 in 5 months!!!
