I've been eyeballing my half-and-half carton for this very purpose the past few months. Thanks for sharing your way of doing it.

Just love how you reuse and recycle . Explanations are clear. Definitely have to try this!

I have been doing it for years... But I make 2 to 3 holes for netcups along its length. And then I put 7 to 8 of these tetrapacks under a grow light. Very efficient and space-saving.

I was wondering about using this method. Instead of using just the one hole at the top, make two or three on the side for the net cups. How does that work for you? Do you have to refill often?
@RohitSingh-sc4zo3 жыл бұрын
@@alexs.2054 Depends on size of the carton and water requirement of plants. I grow green leafy vegetables and small round radishes which require moderate amounts of water. Usually once in two weeks in winter and once a week in summer. Depends on internal room temperature as well. The netcup's 1/4th to 1/5th part must be out so that it is about an inch from the carton's base. And I also insert tiny fragments of cotton wick in net cup slits to ensure that 100% water is used up. Cartons usually have a square cross-section but try and choose a side that gives you greater height when you lay it lengthwise.

@@RohitSingh-sc4zo I am currently growing romaine and another lettuce variety. The lettuce variety I put into the system is a smaller variety from what it looks like. I am using a 1/2 gallon milk carton with 2 in net cups. I have already germinated the seedlings in rockwool and they have developed roots so they are ready to move into a system. I checked before I added everything and there is definitely enough room between the bottom of the cups and the bottom of the container parallel to the cups bottom. The container itself is the same dimensions all the way around so it should be ok. I also spaced them about 3 to 4 in apart from each other. The temp in the grow area is between about 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

@@alexs.2054 It seems you're all set (based on the specifics given by you). Not only leafy greens, this setup is sufficient to grow dwarf tomato and dwarf pepper plants as well (placing netcups at the extreme ends of a carton may help). In case of lettuce, 4 inches spacing will just do if the lettuce grows a big crown... You can also rotate the netcups so that the leaves of one plant don't barge into the leaves of its neighbor. I am planning to do romaine lettuce next so please do share the updates! All the best.

@@RohitSingh-sc4zo Perfect! That is very good to know, I have been looking into starting tomatoes and peppers as well, so that definitely helps. Thank you so much for your help and advice and I will provide updates as soon as I show more progress. All the best to you as well friend!

I have been doing this for about a few months now! I always have these on hand and just randomly decided to use them one day. Lol. Right now I have some dwarf tomatoes growing pretty well. I use my AeroGarden pods and remove the plastic part on the spout, and they fit perfectly!

I use a plastic half gallon jug. I lay it on its side. Cut holes in it (my net cups are 1"). I fill it halfway with nutrient water and thats what i grow my lettuce in. I can grow up to 4 in 1 carton. I assume if you stood it up, you could do a tower of sorts for herbs. Side note. 7/8" net cups fit perfectly in a regular soda bottle.

Great idea!! Goodness knows we have a ton of plastic 2 litre pop bottles around because hubby likes drinking his Diet Coke. I’m always trying to come up with a way of covering the bottles without spray painting I suppose I could just wrap it in tin foil shiny side out like I’ve been doing with my 4 litre jugs for sweet peppers and Roma tomatoes. What size net cups do you tend to use for lettuces? I’ve not tried growing lettuce yet but am looking forward to giving it a try. Also one other question a lot of people use rock wool or hemp fibre or coconuthusk fibre, would it be possible to use a paper towel to germinate the seeds on inside a food container with a lid to create that faux greenhouse type effect and keeping the moisture inside. Trying to do it as economically as possible. Thanks in advance. Hey Khang. I thought about that but didn't think it would work. The net cup would not fit. You, the expert, thought me better. Thank you. I did thought it would fall into the container, without the cup. Happy New Year.

I love these peeks into your mad science grow tent. I wish you would sometimes point at some other plants in the frame and just say their names and what you are trying. I don’t care if it’s a successful project, don’t care if you never mention it again, I don’t need much detail, maybe 2 sentences, I’m dying of curiosity. Did I see raspberries in there? Broccoli stems? Interesting!

Hi there! Love you channel! I have a question, hope you could help me with that! Is it possible to grow lettuce or other greens hydroponically all the way to flowering and seeding? Or maybe after leafs turn bitter would be better to plant it....?

Yes, I do it all the time. If you want them to bolt quickly, start them in the summer. Also, use a larger container so you don't have to refill.
