I LOVE that you can see the realization in Kratos' face when Atreus repeats his words to him. You can see him remember what he sacrificed to win a war, and the grief and resentment and years of pain it brought him. And he realized that he was raising his son to unintentionally be like himself; he sees a reflection of what he did in Atreus. And realizing that...he pulls the flare. Realizes that they both must be better. Realizes the choice he must make. Goddamn this game is a masterpiece i swear...feckin bravo Santa Monica Studios.

I think this game is the true turning point where Kratos realizes that all his lying, hypocrisy, and repression towards Atreus in the past, intentional or not, has contributed towards the damage that Atreus has done, and realizes that the only way to heal and make Atreus not be like him is to open his heart to all suffering and live as honestly and empathetically as he can, especially towards Atreus, no matter how much it might hurt him. People complain about Atreus's egotistical phase in 2018, yet they don't realize that it was caused by a lie by omission from Kratos, that he killed people who were deserving, and didn't tell him that he also killed the people that were not, and that was the lie that got to Atreus's head. Not the godhood, but the lie covering his godhood.

Been waiting for this moment every since the first game, when Kratos told Atreus to close his heart. A great full circle moment for Kratos, to learn that real strength and power comes from one opening their heart. Especially in Atreus case, that what makes the young man the warrior he is.

When you realize Kratos specifically chose this moment to open his and Atreus' heart because of a village of innocents, as it reminded him of the day he made the worst mistake of his life: Sacking a village of Athena-worshippers and accidentally killing his first wife and child...

@joejoejoe532

The hard part is discerning those: often those involved in a war are neither irredeemable nor wholly innocent. In the safety of our homes, it is already hard enough to make sound moral judgments about how to evaluate and engage with people in wartime. To make those sound judgments while confronted by the trauma and desperation of battle takes someone of extraordinary mental fortitude, insight, compassion, and emotional intelligence. I try to be compassionate in my life while doing my best to follow the best moral standards that I can, but I do not think I can make such sounds judgments in wartime.

This is the moment we see, even if Kratos can't admit to himself yet, that he's changed - previously he'd never have given thought to collateral damage in the name of an objective. Here he cannot even consider allowing it, it's not even about if it hurts him or Atreus, it's that he knows it's wrong and thus cannot, will not, allow it to happen.

This entire battle is epically paced with emotional beats and pieces of gameplay - the hype was definitely warranted. But I find it very odd that after all this, Atreus randomly goes off on his own. It doesn’t seem like the logical next step given Kratos is seeing Atreus more as a person than his son. It would’ve made more sense if they did it together honestly, and an actual moment before the shrine too. It kind of felt like a randomly thrown in bit so they (the developer team) didn’t feel obligated to write another game with them .

The entire narrative of gow:r is that atreus felt like he had no control over his self, being and living fully under what kratos said. That's why he ran off to asgard, that's why he left. He found an identity, and later kratos realises this, when atreus released garm and didnt berate him and instead backed him up. he realises atreus needs to be allowed to leave without any reprocussions, as if kratos kept it up, he would've fell into a baldur situation. It isn't random at all, it fits the narrative quite well, after everything, they were finally ready to become their own persons.

@wingsoffreedom3589
@wingsoffreedom3589 2 жыл бұрын
@@donlalo2002 no its just contrived and bad writing with no set up by the writers. Because when Kratos said it the first time he had just battled Baldur and Atraeus said he understood killing animals for food and draugur that were already dead but what about people? In response, Kratos said "close your heart to it, on our journey we will be attacked by all manner of creature. Close your heart to their desperation, close your heart to their suffering, do not allow yourself to feel for them. They will not feel for you." this was proven later when Atraeus had just killed a cannibal reaver who wanted to kill and eat him with no empathy or remorse for his child victim. Kratos saw the horror and guilt on Atraeus's face and he said, "close your heart to it" as a reminder of what he said. All this was beautiful and a growing-up moment as Atraeus is being prepared for manhood and facing the world by a rational, protective, and competent father. All good fathers know that it's their job to keep their kids grounded and realistic so they can make it through life. I loved these moments until the writers of Ragnorok strawmanned the first game with that scene. Atraues said, "I know, I know close your heart to it." Meanwhile, I was yelling at the screen saying " No you idiot those are random civilians, not people attacking you like in the first game. Kratos go remind your retarded son what you said." Then Kratos comes, opens his mouth, and says "no I was wrong open your heart to them." At that moment I lost it I was like "these writers just character-assassinated Kratos and ruined the best moment from the first game and butchered the context of the quote with their low IQ potato-brained, revisionist historian, take!!!"

Kratos says “you feel their pain because that is who you are.” He realizes that when he first told Atreus to “close his heart,” he was inadvertently teaching him to put aside his compassion, and now he’s correcting it. Atreus feels compassion for everyone, even the people he is forced to kill in self defense, and that’s why when they come up with a new plan to breach the wall without hurting more midgardians he says “today we will be better” because the old Kratos would’ve just let them die in order to reach Odin because it puts them in less risk.
