This video is not an instructional but only an attempt to show that not everything that looks effective, is effective.
Here I show a knife stab defence that is often taught in Krav Maga and other Self-Defence systems.
It looks great but when I factor in the attacker’s reflexes then the whole defence falls apart.
In real Self-Defence the attacker will fight back, he will have a reflex when countered and the attacker will have free will and intent of his own.

Interesting take on this. I can see in the video how it would be better going forward than backwards. What I would really like to see is you attacking the other guy with resistance and not stopping your attack, and see how he defends himself using the same move(s). Reason being is that you clearly have a size advantage. I'm not asking this to debunk anything, I just want to see what the reality would be in that scenario.

I understand (and completely agree) what you say about not going backwards because it gives the attacker all the time in the world to try again and again and again. But I also don't completely agree with going forward in a straight line just because it goes against your primal instinct when your brain recognizes a knife coming at you with intent to harm/kill. What we do is try to defend at the most difficult angle for the attacker, which in this video would be the attacker's left side (because he's holding the knife with his right hand and attacking the right side). So what we train in this case would be to do the block stepping first towards him BUT also to your right (his left) in a 45º angle. This allows us to move closer to him without going in a straight line and then control his hand/hit him/whatever next.

Thank you for your insightful comment. Please note that my video is not an instructional about how to defend against a knife, but the purpose was to show the dangers of a very commonly taught technique. I then briefly show how I do it. if I were to do an instructional then you would see that I don't just rush forward but that there is a definite method of intercepting by using footwork and angles and understanding range. What I can say though is that 2 of my members have actually used the defence that I teach to survive real attacks. One of these members actually wrote a testimonial that is visible on my website www.truekravtraining.com In closing : Defending against a knife in reality is not reliant on using a perfect technique because there are too many variables. Understanding range, angles, footwork and control should form the foundation of the defensive strategy. All the best and thank you for watching ! Best Regards Etienne

Idk man, running towards the knife looks like asking to get stabbed.

@@Eri587 going backwards while trying to attempt a disarm is going to get you stabbed anyways. Also, I do not advise running towards the knife. I advise to stay out of range by any means possible. But only shoot forward once the attacker is in range. My point about this video was that you can’t defend a knife going backwards because the attacker will have a reflex and will continue stabbing. If you have to defend against a knife then the best option is unfortunately to shoot forward and intercept, and so doing take the reflex out of the equation.

What if the attacker resists, or actually uses their other arm?

@@MrSteak that is exactly the point I am making in the video. Please see the word “DEBUNKED” in the title 🧐

Kravplayers don't use real resistance silly! No matter how hard the attacker telegraphs and attacks awkwardly once you just have to hiss at them even louder to succeed! None of them know any grappling, so it kinda works. But there's a good reason that "defense" is never seen in any sport fighting.

@@bryantaylor7137I share your sentiments about Krav Maga “players” Please note my title of the video says “DEBUNKED” thus the point of my video was to show that the technique that they teach in Krav Maga does not work. I can’t make it clearer than I already did 🤷🏻
