Kreator, the band that mastered pure thrash. No other can thrash like them. ‘Pleasure to Kill’ is one of the highlights of the 80s for me as it was such a contrast to the colorful glam that prevailed the decade. It could come out today and blow away and/or shock the general population. ‘Endless Pain’ is absolutely amazing too; Mille pretty much started black metal style vocals in that debut.

For me, Pleasure to Kill has something magical that no other Kreator albums have. I should like their other 80s Kreator classics, but after listening to Pleasure to Kill, it all sounds boring in comparison (except for Endless Pain and Flag of Hate EP). Similar to what Bonded by Blood did to me with Exodus. There's something inherently captivating about cave man thrash that no 'advanced' production or musicianship can create. Listening to this record is like seeing a train run off the rails. They are playing so fast beyond their own capacity, up beats become down beats, solos are sloppy as hell, but it's so great and perfect. I think 'fast' and 'heavy' in music isn't objective aesthetics, it's the musician's attitude and emotions. And they have ton of attitude here.

Not a fan of the Gothenburg bullshit, but Kreator in the 80's were THE Thrash Metal band. Their first five albums are pretty much essential for anyone who likes the genre. My favorite still is Terrible Certainty, it had the aggression from Pleasure to Kill, the more technical sound from Coma of Souls and Extreme Aggression and also the first one with decent production (for the time). Kreator doesn't play most of their 80's output live, unfortunately.

Awesome, I asked for it, so thank you very much. I've got all their albums on vinyl except Endorama(which will be rereleased soon). I was late to Kreator(and the German thrash bands in general), so I first heard their recent albums, which I love. I really like the early ones, but I honestly haven't had enough time with each to properly rank them. I essentially learned all of their catalogue at once other than the last record. I do like different styles, so I don't hate the 90's stuff. But it's clearly not their strong suit. Thrash bands either hid, or altered their sound in that period, for the most part.

I actually enjoyed the modern Kreator albums from Violent Revolution onwards. Albums like Phantom Antichrist, Gods of Violence, Violent Revolution, and Enemy of God are what I consider among their finest; their best for me while Hordes of Chaos is just good in it's own right. I admit I like the Gothenburg sound. For their classics, sure Pleasure To Kill is awesome, but for some reason I like Coma of Souls. Then the rest are Extreme Aggression, Terrible Certainty and Endless Pain. For their "experimental age", I'm definitely not fond of them, although there are a little good stuff from Renewal, Cause for Conflict and Outcast. Songs like Renewal, Phobia, Nonconformist, Prevail and Catholic Despot are the few songs I like from them. Endorama is the worst for me. Pretty much these experimental albums are the lowest Kreator albums for me.

Maybe they just became bored with thrash and wanted to slow down and play heavy music that had more of a groove and catchier riffs (which Metallica had actually been doing for a while on songs such as For Whom The Bell Tolls, The Thing That Should Not Be, and Harvester Of Sorrow). As a fan and musician, I felt exactly the same way in that time period - I become burned out on thrash because all of the newer bands just sounded like B and C grade imitiations of the bands who came before them and/or were overly technical and boring, so by 1989/90, I had gotten really into bluesy hard rock bands such as Guns 'N' Roses, The Cult and Danzig as well as alternative hard rock/metal bands such as Jane's Addiction, Faith No More and especially Soundgarden. Then I heard Alice In Chains, Tool, Helmet, Rollins Band, and Pantera and I didn't listen to thrash metal again until the revival in the early 2000's. Hey, I was feeling nostalgic, and the Death Angel albums from that time period were killer.

I think ranking Kreator is kinda hard, because their gift and their curse is how insanely consistent they are. They're somehow able to sell you the same album over and over yet it never gets old - its genuinely impressive, but it also makes it very hard for individual tracks to stand out from everything else. Very broadly speaking, I think you're gonna have two camps: the people who rate Coma very highly and by extension enjoy the 2000s era a lot more, and the people who rate Pleasure to Kill very highly and by extension enjoy the 80s era a lot. My first introduction to the band was Gods of Violence, so naturally I side with the former. Having now listened to almost everything at least three times over, I feel informed enough to give an opinion, even if unpopular as it typically is. S tier * Coma of Souls: This album does everything the 2000s era's albums do, but with that killer 80s sound and without feeling as formulaic. Compared to the rest of the 80s albums, the production value and songwriting is just miles ahead. A tier * Enemy of God, Violent Revolution: These two are roughly equivalent to one another IMO, it's just a matter of how aggressive you feel/what specific songs you feel like listening to that day. They are far from perfect of course - the lack of solos in general is kinda shameful, and they were made in the 2000s which simply cannot compare with the sound quality of Coma - but otherwise both of these are solid experiences all the way through. On the one hand I can see through the formula but on the other hand I don't really care, lol. There's stand out tracks of course, but really you could pick pretty much any song from either album and I'd be totally in it. * Gods of Violence: Very likely biased on this one, but in terms of iconic melodies and songwriting I really do think this is a step above the stuff below. There's only three songs in the entire record I don't like, which is definitely above average in my book. Really memorable stuff all around. B tier - a.k.a. you could've cut any of these in half and ended up with an amazing EP * Phantom Antichrist, Hordes of Chaos: Again, these two are roughly equivalent to one another IMO. The title tracks for both of these are iconic in my mind. Overall, half the songs in each of these are memorable while the other half kinda get muddled up with the overall formula. * Extreme Aggression: I can see myself getting a bit more attached to this over time, but IMO the songwriting just hasn't matured enough yet at this point and some of the lyrics make me cringe. Great energy, but I'd rather listen to any of the albums above with their more polished songwriting. C tier * Cause for Conflict: This was probably the biggest surprise for me personally when going through everything. For how much people shit on this album, I really don't think it's that bad. The songwriting is about as unpolished as anything before Coma, with practically the same level of energy and aggression, and while I can see people hating the 90s production style, personally I don't mind the improved audio quality and the minimal but tasteful use of digital effects (before they went off the deep end in the next album). This album even gave us a look at what Mille's voice would sound like in the 2000s era, which I thought was kinda pleasant to hear. I guess my only complaint would be that its way too long for what it is, but I wouldn't mind revisiting this occasionally. I really do think this was a step in the right direction after they went off the rails with Renewal. * Endless Pain, Terrible Uncertainty: Everything I said about Extreme Aggression applies here, just one step lower down the ladder. Maybe worth the occasional visit - I do think you have to listen to these all the way through if you're going to - but I'd rather listen to future releases where their songwriting and musicianship feels more solid. F tier - a.k.a. I don't want to listen to any of these ever again * Pleasure to Kill: I've listened to this four times in its entirety, and its just too much for me to handle all at once, to the point where its just not fun to listen to. Riot of Violence and Take Their Lives are stand out tracks, but overall it just all becomes noise after a while. * Renewal: This was just straight up boring, but I probably would've been furious had I actually paid for this back when it had just released. From the highest of highs to the lowest of lows, you'd think it wouldn't get worse than this. * Endorama: This is an improvement on Outcast, but that's really not saying much. The first two tracks are alright and then I progressively cringe more the longer it goes. The vocals in this album make my skin crawl, and not in a good way. * Outcast: Jesus fucking christ, what happened here. This is probably the only instance where I seriously considered quitting halfway through and not even finishing. Which was kinda worth it cause the second half is miles better, but overall its just not worth it.

I love early Kreator and remember thinking when I first heard PTK as a 13yo - yes, I am that old - that metal couldn't get more extreme than this. On most of the songs it sounds almost as if they're playing right on the ragged edge of their speed and it could all fall apart at any moment. They were 18yo when they recorded it and it has all the ferocity only teenagers can manage. Awesome record!

Cool list, surprised and happy to see Coma come in at number 5. It’s good but too catchy for me. A good introductory album like you said but I haven’t listened to it for 10 years. Pleasure to Kill and Endless Pain are a different matter. Have them on very frequently.

I like Chaos A.D. , but of course earlier albums are better, the problem with it is it's like pantera - music is not "bad" in terms of thrash, but it inspired a lot of nu-metal and etc. stuff, that came later

I was also fortunate to catch them live on this tour with D.R.I. and Holy Terror at the legendary Storyville Jazzhall in the summer of 1988. A most memorable show.

My intro to Kreator was “Out Of The Dark, Into The Light”. I’ve loved them ever since! But I still gotta say Coma Of Souls was their number one. I think all the stars aligned at that moment, from the composition to the production, even the marketing. Or maybe I was just 19 when I heard it and we all are stuck with our tastes from when we were young!

I kinda relate their latest period with Maiden, a bit melodic stuff with catchy choirs for the hordes to sing along at the shows, not bad for 3 or 4 albums... but it's turning a bit repetitive now. I have the feeling they will continue with the same formula.

Very well done, my friend. Being alive during the early days of thrash, and actually experiencing Pleasure to Kill (my #1) and Terrible Certainty (my #2) when they were released...sorry, but thrash will never be as good as it was then.

Pleasure to Kill the Brutal Death Metal classic will always be my favorite. I also like Coma of Souls for their authentic Thrash Metal period . I hate their 1990s albums, but all their Thrash Metal Revival albums are not terribly awful, but I think everything from Endless Pain to Coma of Souls is incredibly great.

Pleasure To Kill is not a death metal album. Almost but not quite.
@godetonter47642 жыл бұрын
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 not by today's standards, but when you consider all the other albums available up to that point. I would consider it more intense than almost anything else on the market at that point. Possessed - Seven Churches was considered the first Death Metal album, Pleasure to Kill was way Heavier than that album, and also wiped the floor with the 2 Sepultura albums released that same year. The only album that even came close was Slayer - Hell Awaits. I am judging the music on the actual velocity level not the speed level . Pleasure to Kill had that bottom end tone that Sepultura and Possessed lacked . I think that from Terrible Certainty onwards Kreator sounded moofre Thrash Metal in tone, and production. In the liner notes of Schizophrenia it mentioned how Sepultura decided to play Thrash Metal as opposed to the Death Metal of their EP and debut full length. Going by the fact both Possessed and Sepultura were considered Death Metal at that point in time, I definitely think Kreator - Pleasure to Kill fit the criteria in 1986. When compared to Cannibal Corpse - Tomb of the Mutilated, or Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten , Pleasure to Kill sounds like Heavy Speed Metal, but so does Scream Bloody Gore, Seven Churches, and Morbid Visions when compared to the real guttural Monster Vocal bands
@markpalavosvrahotes55752 жыл бұрын
@@godetonter4764 But sometimes a thrash metal album may be heavier than a death metal album. For example Sepulturas first album I consider death metal due to tempo changes but is not as heavy as the thrash Pleasure To Kill. Pleasure rips all the way through.

Coma of Souls definitely number 1. After hearing that, I went back and listened to the early stuff and thought the composition was top notch but the production was sooooooooo weak. I can't stomach it. guitars are thin and paper like. I much prefer Kreator's live version of any of those songs off of the early albums. Btw, I saw them in Detroit, Michigan back around 2010 and they were unbelievable. They really blew me away and I consider myself pretty picky.
